I’m a huge fan of Sofia Coppola despite the slight misstep she took with her last film, Marie Antoinette. It still has moments of brilliance and I will complement her on her ambition but overall the film lacked that intimacy that made Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation so good. It looks like she’s back on form with her latest directorial effort, Somewhere.
The film stars Stephen Dorff (Immortals) and Elle Fanning (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and returns Coppola to what she does best. Telling a story about a small group of people, shot in a low-key yet still beautiful style. It’s about an A-List celeb who’s lost in the lifestyle trying to reconnect with his daughter. Simple and ripe for opportunity just like Lost.
The trailer also uses music in a way that brings the greats like Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson to mind, particularly the opening shot when Dorff enters the frame just as the Phoenix track (Love Like a Sunset Part II) swells. I’m also super stoked that the trailer announces that the French band’s music will be integral to the film because their latest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, is one of the best in recent years and seems tailor made for use in a film. The second track is a cool demo version of You Only Live Once by The Strokes called I’ll Try Anything Once. Have a look, you won’t be disappointed…

Sorry, but the music in the trailer was actually ‘I’ll Try Anything Once” by Julian Casablancas.

Yes, the second song in the trailer is ‘I’ll try anything once’ by Julian Casablancas (which is mentioned in the post only I accredited the song to his band The Strokes). The first song (and I think most of the film) is by Phoenix, it’s called Love Like A Sunset Pt. II.
