The Dailies: “Dark Knight” breaks box office records
Monday, July 21, 2008
It’s late in the day so I`ll dispense with just a brief Monday edition of The Dailies, but the news is sizeable: the box office turnout for The Dark Knight has broken multiple box office records. Learn how much after the leap.
Even with the most optimistic forecasting for the opening weekend for The Dark Knight nobody dared guess that the Batman movie would surpass $130 million dollars. Well, as it turns out the movie made well over that mark and wound up with a weekend gross of an astounding $155 million dollars. That feat shattered the previous record holder, Spider-Man 3, which took in $151 mil just a year earlier. The Dark Knight also broke the record for the highest gross in an opening day ($66 mil for the Friday showings including the early Thursday night screenings.) By contrast Batman Begins netted Warner Bros. $205 million dollars during its entire theatrical run. Financially speaking The Dark Knight is a monster.
Right now I bet some studio people at Warner Bros. are already putting together an enticing offer to get director Chris Nolan and Christian Bale back for their third Bat adventure.
