The highly anticipated 2009 Academy Awards are finally around the corner! Airing this Sunday, February 22nd, the winners will be announced in a three hour ceremony hosted by People’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ Hugh Jackman. In a tight race for the coveted Oscar statuettes, this years nominees include Hollywood heavyweights like Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Meryl Streep.
Films up for best picture include:
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – A curious case of a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.
- Frost/Nixon – A retelling of the controversial television interviews between ho st David Frost and former president Richard Nixon.
- Milk – The inspiring account of the first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk, who was ultimately assassinated.
- The Reader – Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman, Michael re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial.
- Slumdog Millionaire – A winner of the Indian “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” is arrested under suspicion of cheating. During interrogation, events from his life history are shown which explain why he knows the answers.
While The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is up for 13 Oscar awards, films like Milk and Slumdog Millionaire have a really good chance of beating button out. Slumdog, in particular, has been one of the highest rated films of the year and has picked up numerous awards including 4 Golden Globes. On the other hand, Kate Winslet’s comeback with director Harvey Weinstein or Frank Langella’s strong portrayal of Richard Nixon may sway Oscar voters in a last-minute win.
Stephen Colbert is also weighing in with his predictions on the Academy Award winners. Last year he got five for five right which is pretty good considering he didn’t see any of the movies. Just how did he make the predictions? By connecting the dots using DaColbert Code, which is kinda like The DaVinci Code but a lot more complicated. This year Colbert attempts to do it again, and predict the winners of the 2009 Academy Awards. Click the image to below to watch Colbert explain the DaColbert Code.

So who do you think deserves an award this year? Who do you think was snubbed from Best Picture? Join in the hype and cast your predictions for this years winners by playing the Oscar live challenge!
