One of television’s most recognizable faces has left us. Veteran character actor Don S. Davis, probably best known for his role as General George Hammond on “Stargate -SG1″, passed away on the weekend at his home in Gibsons, B.C. Davis was 65 years old.
Davis played the role of Gen. Hammond throughout the hit sci-fi series’ first seven seasons. He stepped down from being a regular member of the show’s cast in 2003 due to health issues but came back in regular guest appearance in “SG-1″ as well as its spinoff series “Stargate Atlantis”. Davis is also remembered for his character of Major Garland Briggs in David Lynch’s surreal “Twin Peaks” series and for playing Dana Scully’s father in “The X-Files”. All three of these characters were members of the American military, a niche that Davis had carved out in show business. While he often found himself cast as career military or law enforcement men, off-screen Davis was known for his exceptionally kind and friendly personality. Tributes to his work and the man have already begun to appear on the internet like this one on the popular “Stargate” fansite Gateworld. According to a message relayed by Davis’ wife, the actor suffered a heart attack on the morning of Sunday, June 29. Those interested in expressing their condolences have been asked to consider making a donation to the American Heart Association.
