Making a film with Catherine Zeta-Jones as Cleopatra I can see. Casting Hugh Jackman as Marc Antony, OK, I’m good with that. But if you want to talk about unusual, I’d say having eclectic film director Steven Soderberg helm the film and making the film a rock and roll musical is up there.
Variety is reporting that’s precisely what the Ocean’s Eleven-through-Thirteen and Che director is looking to do soon. Soderbergh is seeking $30 million of investment to make his musical Cleopatra movie and is looking for a studio to release the film. As he assembles the financials for that movie Soderbergh is also prepping to make The Girlfriend Experience as his next project. That one stars a porn star named Sasha Grey as a $10K a night call girl. But to understand how busy a guy Soderbergh is, get this: he just finished a movie with Matt Damon called The Informant and his next-to-be-released is a massively long biopic about legendary guerilla fighter Che Guevara starring Benecio Del Toro as the man. Soderbergh doesn’t sleep; the guy has to be a robot.
