Even if you don’t watch professional wrestling or aren’t that familiar with the world of the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) you are certainly familiar with many of the stars who have found their starts in the ring and have emerged to become some of the most bankable and highly recognizable names in Hollywood.
Names such as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Glen “Kane” Jacobs and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may all ring a familiar bell both in ring and out.
With “12 Rounds” opening on March 27th, John Cena (The Marine) may be the newest star to emerge from the WWE ring whose name and marquee value is about to get an upgrade. Directed by action-helmer Reny Harlin, “12 Rounds” is a slick, fast-paced thrill ride with some terrific action sequences that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
Leading the charge of this celluloid fun-ride is the 6-foot-1, 240-pound current WWE
star John Cena. Cast as Danny Fisher, a New Orleans Police Detective, Cena must save his kidnapped fiancée from the clutches of a deranged criminal mastermind who taunts Danny with a series of near-impossible puzzles and tasks… 12 rounds worth… that Danny must somehow complete to save the life of his fiancée.
We sat down with John to talk about his career, the WWE, the rumors about Captain America and oh yes, “12 Rounds”. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
Q: How do you feel this movie career is going for you coming off the WWE?
JOHN CENA: Fantastic. “The Marine” a few years ago was a great introduction I would say for me into acting. I learned a lot from doing that movie and certainly corrected a lot of what I thought the flaws were of that movie into “12 Rounds.” This one is a product that I’m very, very proud of. I can’t believe only for my second feature that it’s something that came out this excellent and that’s only thanks to Mark Gordon, to Fox, and to Renny Harlin.
Q: How are you adjusting to performing for cameras as opposed to a live audience?
JOHN CENA: It’s very similar. The live audience – I make the comparison of doing movies to Broadway theater. We are episodic television, man. We tell stories. It’s the same thing as a movie. We make mini-movies every week. You have to realize there’s no live audience there and be a little bit more reserved in your actions. I relied heavily on Renny and on my cast. I told them the first day that I’m a bit ignorant to this stuff. If you see anything that looks way out of the realm or if anything looks stupid, just cut, tell me how to fix it and we’ll get it fixed. At this point we were left wondering if a man can have it all? Can you work in the movie business and still stay active in the ring? So we ask…

John Cena and
action movies? A better pairing I could not have designed myself. If he plays his cards right he is certainly destined for action-hero stardom. How long he will be able to keep both careers alive and going simultaneously will be interesting to watch since not all movies shoot in the US and international flights are much harder to schedule around a Monday night show. “12 Rounds” is a much better movie than his first outing “The Marine” and should do well with both men and women. Think of it as an action-style date-movie. Time will show if America is ready to accept Cena as their next top action star. However, just a reminder, if you don’t, he may just throw a chair at you.
“12 Rounds” slams into theaters March 27th and Cena can be seen on the hit cable program “Monday Night RAW on the USA Network as well as in the ring at various events worldwide.
