Matt Damon in The Informant

Matt Damon, star of The Bourne Trilogy, is starring as Mark Whitacre in the upcoming Dark Comedy/Thriller The Informant.

Jonathan Decarlo @ Examiner points out:

“Not only did Whitacre suffer from manic depressive disorder while working with the FBI, but he also implicated himself as a corporate swindler during said informing and spent close to eight and a half years in a prison “camp” for multiple counts of fraud. It’s not rocket science why this story was made into a movie at this point in our political and financial climate.”

Totally bemused by this piece of info, I had to check Mark Whitacre’s Wikipedia entry. Sure enough, with dozens of citations and 2 books written about him (The Informant being the basis for the movie), this true story stands up on its own, albeit crazy, legs.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh (who also did “Sex, Lies, and Videotape“, directed the Ocean’s Trilogy, and recently, “The Girlfriend Experience“) The Informant is based on a true story; Mark Whitacre, vice president of Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), becomes the star witness and primary informant for an FBI investigation into ADM’s agriculture related price fixing.

Damon’s character, both naive and ambitious, really looks in over his head in this brand new trailer.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen - More of the same woolly mammoths, Scrat, with his hilarious antics, chasing his nut. The posters and the trailers were all vivid, bright and sold me instantly on the humor and fun that I’d seen in the two previous installments. It’s more of a good thing!

What I’d Heard - That the 3D aspect of the movie was cool and that they didn’t over use it but rather allowed it to add to the movie’s overall look and feel. (This is very true I can confirm.) I’d also heard that they were moving underground since the Ice Age would have killed off all the dinosaurs on earth so hence the move to a new location with a new set of characters to have fun with.

What I Wanted - A continuation of the story I had come to like and enjoy. The dynamic between Manny (Romano) the woolly mammoth and his pal Sid (Leguizamo). This classic odd couple introducing Ellie (Latifah) as Manny’s wife makes this pairing even more hilarious. The wit and fun of the two previous movies made me especially anxious to see the third installment. But, of course, the reason we all want to see Ice Age is for the adventures of Scrat! He is the best part of the movie and the perfect comedy relief. I really just wanted more Scrat.

The introduction of a female Scrat means a richer storyline for the beloved acorn chaser families have come to know too well.

EXPERIENCE

What Turned Me On - The characters were all back and they were each given great story arcs and funny lines. The pressure of becoming a father for Manny and the wish for a family for Sid are both well thought out and intriguing. It helps that this is a family picture and kids can relate to the importance of family. Plus, I loved the fact that even Scrat has a love interest in this story and he must chose between his love for the acorn and the love of a Miss Scrat. Terrific!

What Turned Me Off - Not much. The story was fun and engaging. This movie is best seen with children and is made for kids. So if viewed with the eyes of a child, it’s a winner. I did not go into this expecting a heavy message or a thrill ride. But what I did get was a terrific heart warming story with characters that were both likable and familiar to me. Maybe some of the action sequences would be too intense for the under-five crowd, but otherwise: fun!

Simon Pegg adds a new edge to the ensemble cast with his portrayal of the one-eyed weasel, Buck.

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking - I can’t wait to take my niece and nephew to this!

I Left Saying - I wonder if they will have plush toys of the new characters that I can buy? I really want to get a Miss Scrat!

Expiry Date - This pic will have a strong opening and may even best Public Enemies as it is for the full family and Public Enemies is just for the big folks. It will have a nice run, not on par with Pixar’s UP, but strong nonetheless. Expect this to have a big release for the holidays as a gift idea. It will wind up on the shelves of most homes right next to Ice Age One and Two. It certainly holds its own against the two previous installments and is perhaps even stronger than the second.

Days later - I can’t wait to take my niece and nephew to this!

But wait! This one - Blood: The Last Vampire - has a bit of a different flavor - samurais and tough girls and slashes into theaters July 10th, 2009.

In this international collaborative project, renowned producers Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero) and Abel Nahmias (11 Commandments, La Beuze) team up with director Chris Nahon (Kiss of the Dragon) on this English language vampire slaying adventure, where the hope of the world rests in the hands of a beautiful young woman.

The beautiful young woman mentioned is played by Korean superstar actress Gianna Jun - Yup, she’s cute, but also tough and talented. In fact, she’s described as, “someone by whom young men throughout Asia dreamed to be beaten up.”

Born in 1981, Korean actress Gianna is a celebrated artist over Asia. Further the film doesn’t seem to be made for teen-only audience as fans of classic quests and martial arts films seem targeted in this high-quality production.

Synopsis of Blood: The Last Vampire:

The newest installment is “I Can Do Bad All by Myself ” - here’s the gist:

When “Madea”, America’s favorite pistol-packing grandma, catches sixteen-year-old Jennifer and her two younger brothers looting her home, she decides to take matters into her own hands and delivers the young delinquents to the only relative they have: their aunt April.

Initially wanting nothing to do with the kids, April learns along the way that she can change her old ways and become a better person. But it takes a lot of work and the help of a handsome Mexican immigrant who moves in with April to push her to change.

The previous adventure was Madea Goes to Jail - the DVD release of which was featured on the Behind the Scenes vidcast #49. Tyler Perry is a solo-industry in that he produces, directs, writes AND stars in the Madea films as the title character.

This clip gives a sense of what’s Tyler Perry’s style is all about, ergo: “I’m not gonna put my weapons down for no officer, I’m sorry. All I want you to do is send an ambulance because I’m gonna bust a cap in these fools.”

Harry Potter returns to theaters July 15 with the film franchise's sixth installment, The Half-Blood Prince.

Okay, so you’re a little behind in the Harry Potter series. Maybe your favorite niece is coming to town and you’ve promised to watch all the movies before her visit so you can take her to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on July 15th. But then you realize there are five of these already, and each one is over two hours long. Yikes!

Don’t worry, Movieset has you covered. When little Janie or Susie or Mary or Melanie comes to town talking of Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Gryffindors and Quidditch matches, you’ll be able to hold your own at least enough to avoid sounding too much like a Muggle (Don’t worry, we’ll tell you what that is too).

Just to get you started, Half-Blood Prince is the sixth adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s wildly popular series of novels. As with the others, the central characters are Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). To make things easier, remember that this is the sixth movie based on the sixth book telling about the aforementioned character’s sixth year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this story, Potter discovers a book marked “Property of the Half-Blood Prince,” which unleashes some secrets of the mysterious dark Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes).

So here’s a list of characters and terms. Study up and you might still maintain that favorite uncle status. And if that doesn’t work, you can always just spend $52 dollars on candy at the movie theater and bribe your niece into a sugar coma.

Azkaban - The prison where naughty wizards are sent to pay for their magical crimes.

Bertie Botts - These jelly beans come in every flavor and I mean every flavor. Two varieties are vomit and dirt. Yum.

Boggart - This troublesome creature turns you into whatever you fear the most.

Crabbe - A Slytherin and one of Draco Malfoy’s (see below) sidekicks. He’s portly, smug and not to be trusted.

Draco Malfoy - The arch-enemy of goody-two-shoes Harry Potter, usually wearing an unpleasant sneer.

The Dursley Family - Harry’s only living relatives, but they aren’t exactly of the loving variety. In fact, due to their distrust of Potter’s magical abilities, they kept the poor boy sleeping in a cupboard for years, treating him like a second-class citizen.

Firebolt - The fastest, most advanced broomstick you can get. It can hit 150 miles per hour in only ten seconds.

Flobberworm - These thick, brown worms live in shallow ditches and grow up to ten inches in length.

Glumbumble - A grey, furry insect that flies. They descend from Northern Europe.

Goyle - Another sidekick of Malfoy’s, this one’s got the same sneer and an oddly high forehead.

Gryffindor - One of the four houses of the Hogwarts Academy. The school is named for Godric Gryfifndor, its colors are scarlet and gold. The house symbol is a lion. This is the house to which Harry, Hermione and Ron belong.

Hagrid - The beloved Hogwart’s groundskeeper. He is the one who rescued Potter from his unhappy home and first made him aware of his exceptional wizard abilities.

Harry Potter - The hero of the story. He was orphaned as a boy when the powerful wizard Voldemort murdered his parents. He shows great promise as a wizard and is getting more and more powerful through the course of his Hogwarts education.

Hedwig - Harry Potter’s pet snowy own, a gift from Hagrid on his 11th birthday.

Hermione Granger - One of Potter’s best friends. She’s a Gryffindor and one of the most brilliant members of her class. She’s also pretty easy on the eyes.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - The British school attended by all Witches and Wizards. Its four houses are named for Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. It is located somewhere in Scotland.

Hogwart’s Express - The steam train that takes students from Platform Nine and Three Quarters at King’s Cross Station directly to Hogwarts.

Hufflepuff - Another Hogwarts house. This one is named after Helga Hufflepuff. The house colors are yellow and black. The house symbol is a badger.

Mackled Malaclaw - Although they look like your standard lobster, this red crustacean is land bound. Along with a sting, its bite results in seven days of bad luck.

Manticore - This deadly, Grecian beast has the head of a man, the body of a lion and the tale of a scorpion. One bite from this beast results in instant death.

M.O.M. - Acronym for the Ministry of Magic.

Muggle - This is a term wizards have for someone with no magical abilities.

Peppermint Toads - These tasty candies bounce around in your stomach after you digest them.

Quidditch - The most popular sport of the wizard world. There are seven players on each team riding around on broomsticks. There are four balls, the most important of which is the Golden Snitch. A team wins when they catch the Snitch.

Ron Weasley, wearing the scarlett and gold colors of Gryffindor, is suited up for a game of Quidditch.

Ravenclaw - Another Hogwarts house. This one is named after Rowena Ravenclaw. The house colors are blue and bronze. The house symbol is an eagle.

Ron Weasley - Potter’s other best friend and confidant at Hogwarts. He comes from a large family of wizards.

Scabbers - Ron’s pet rat. He doesn’t do much besides sleep.

Slytherin - The final of the four houses of Hogwarts. This one is named after Salazar Slytherin. The house colors are green and silver. The house symbol is the serpent. This is the house to which Potter’s enemy, Draco Malfoy, belongs.

Voldemort - The dark wizard that killed Potter’s parents. He has also tried to kill Harry.

A car explodes on the set of The Irishman

In a June 29th, 2009 press release [PRNewswire], MovieSet extolled about the burgeoning relationship with The Irishman. No, we’re not talking an Irish man, this is The Irishman, the movie.

Hollywood Entrepreneur, Tommy Reid, Comes on Strong with THE IRISHMAN

Producer/director/writer Tommy Reid is a force to be reckoned with. In his latest film, The Irishman (Jonathan Hensleigh 2010), which Reid co-produces and has nurtured for the past twelve years, Reid ups his game and surrounds himself with some impressive talent, both in front of and behind the camera. Reid is himself impressive, achieving his goals by combining a passionate dedication to film making with intense focus and a good old-fashioned work ethic.

The Nicholson Terminal & Dock Co. in River Rouge has just the sort of gritty look that appealed to producers of the film “The Irishman.” Which is why on Tuesday, it was serving as the backdrop for the opening scene of the movie, which is based on the life of the late Cleveland mobster Danny Greene, who came to power in the 1970s.

Ray Stevenson, who stars as Greene, and other actors and extras were hard at work trying to capture the hardscrabble atmosphere of working on the docks. And, unlike some Hollywood flicks, the terminal came with its own props — rusted piles of scrap metal and heat-defying mud puddles.

Indeed, another vampire flick, this one is called Daybreakers and stars Ethan Hawke as a researcher in 2019 tracking down some special blood before time … runs … out …! In Theaters January 8th, 2010.

Besides what is sure to be another creepy performance by Willem Dafoe, this film is another chance for fans to see Australian actress Isabel Lucas who is also in the new action film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen playing a seducing student with a remarkable tail attacking a helpless Shia Labeouf.

She’ll also be appearing in Spielberg’s The Pacific, a quasi-non-continuation of the HBO Band of Brothers mini-series.

From my vantage point, Ms. Lucas and her country-woman Abbie Cornish seem poised to become some of Hollywood’s busiest actors in coming years.

The film is receiving great response and huge box office in the opening weekend.

This weekend the critics acclaimed a new action movie — a story of men and robots at war against a group of machines that could destroy part of the planet. That film was The Hurt Locker, about U.S. soldiers defusing bombs in Baghdad. It opened at just four theaters in New York City and Los Angeles and earned $144,000, for a robust screen average of $36,000.

CHARLIE ROSE: Kathryn Bigelow is here. She is one of Hollywood’s most innovative and skillful directors. Her work often explores the conventional masculine themes of violence and power and character. Her earlier films include “Near Dark,” “Point Break” and “Strange Days.”

Her latest effort is called “The Hurt Locker.” David Denby of “The New Yorker” calls the film “the most emotionally involving picture yet made about the Iraq war.”

Bruno tours the Globe!

Berlin!

Bruno celebrated the German premiere of his movie by appearing before crowds at the famous Brandenburg Gate wearing a pink knitted bodysuit and matching furry boots.

But what stunned Berliners most was without question his knitted genitalia, hanging out on display for all to admire.

Amsterdam!

The next stop on the tour was Amsterdam, where Bruno arrived on the scene on a jet ski.

He piloted his craft up the tight canal (like someone who’s obviously done it before) and splashed down in the middle of the city’s infamous red light district.

On cue, a whole throng of throng-wearing male models dozen men then emerged from behind the curtains of the three-story building, where female prostitutes normally display their wares to passersby on the street.

Fans flocked over to Leicester Square on June 17 to see Sacha Baron Cohen strut his stuff as Bruno, and they definitely weren’t disappointed. He showed up in London on Wednesday in skimpy Buckingham Palace guard regalia, revealing even more than he did at the movie’s Paris premiere.

I loved both of the movie scores as well as the hand drawn dragon/wizard chillin in his Ice Palace in Destroyer.

4) John Matrix (Commando)

Matrix is enjoying the quiet life in the country with his daughter who we know he loves cause they feed a deer together.  She gets kidnapped and Daddy wants to save her, but not without busting out multiple classic one-liners “he’s dead tired”, “remember when I said I’d kill you last, I lied”, “let off  some steam Bennett” … you know’em all.  I also love the fact he blows the hell out of every building in the compound with no knowledge of where his daughter is being held… he’s just that good… sawblade!

5) Terminator (Parts 1 & 2)

In an emotionless performance, even Keanu Reeves couldn’t match, Arny brings a James Cameron dream/nightmare to life. You know the movies and you’ve had the space-time continuem debate asking did anything change, could anything have changed and how could a movie with Angela Chase in it actually be bad?  That last question might just be me “My So Called Life”!!!

6) Doug Quade (Total Recall)

Some men now in their thirties might lay awake a night wondering why they have constant dreams about three-b00bed women until late on a Tuesday night Spike TV reminds you of where that seed was planted.  Total Recall! Not only would I have choosen brunette and sleazy like Dougy here but I definitely would have tried to grab a quick autograph from Kuato aka Danny Devito?

7) Captain Ivan Danko (Red Heat)

Moscow’s toughest detective. Chicago’s craziest cop. There’s only one thing worse than making them mad. Making them partners. Hmmm… I like it, let’s pay Schwarz $8 mill, don’t look at me in that tone of voice!

Russian characters in the 80s seemed to lack that comedic flair?

8) Harry Tasker (True Lies)

I’m starting to get sick and tired of staring at the Governator so I’m getting straight to why True Lies was a solid action flick. JLC!  She can dance, fall and dance again with the best of ‘em!  Also, Bill Paxton revisits some of the panicked, frantic, whiny characteristics from his Aliens character Pvt. Hudson “Where in some really pretty sh@t now!”

9) Adam Gibson (The 6th Day)

A Futuristic action about a man who meets a clone of himself and stumbles into a grand conspiracy about clones taking over the world. I feel weird asking myself this but “can I harvest your organs should the need arise” whoa , what, I’m just saying…

I see a $25 million dollar paycheck... neat.

10) John Kruger (Eraser)

John Kruger (no relation to Freddy) works for the witness relocation program as a U.S. Marshal. His job is to remove all traces of the identity of any witness in the program and to, as called for, eliminate threats against any of those witnesses. “Why US Marshal that’s quite the accent?” Bang!

Well, that’s ten worth remembering I think.  Oh, Arnold Schwarzenneger, an actor who started with a heavy accent, seemed to get better in the mid-eighties (probably was doing more takes) and then reverted back to almost incoherent (ask him to say “my new film is entitled Collateral Damage).

With four wounded and production terminated just six days before wrap, filmmaker David Whitney may have stretched his vision for authenticity too far, when Taliban soldiers opened fire on four crew members near the set of Kandahar Break, smack on the Afghan/Pakistan border.

Farrah Fawcett was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Pauline Alice and James William Fawcett. She was of French, English, and Choctaw Native American ancestry.

Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, and began treatment, including chemotherapy and surgery. Four months later, on her 60th birthday, the Associated Press wire service reported that Fawcett was, at that point, cancer free. I hope that my news might offer some level of inspiration to others who unfortunately must continue to fight the disease.”

Less than four months later, in May 2007, Fawcett brought a small digital video camera to document a doctor’s office visit. There, she was told a malignant polyp was found in the area where she had been treated for the initial cancer. Doctors contemplated whether to implant a radiation seeder (which differs from conventional radiation and is used to treat other types of cancer). Fawcett’s U.S. doctors told her the cancer was inoperable and that she would require a colostomy. Instead, Fawcett traveled to Germany for treatments described variously in the press as “holistic”,”aggressive”, and “alternative”.

There, Dr. Ursula Jacob prescribed a treatment including surgery to remove the anal tumor, and a course of perfusion and embolization for her liver cancer by Doctors Claus Kiehling and Thomas Vogl in Germany, and chemotherapy back in Fawcett’s home town of Los Angeles. Although initially the tumors were regressing, their reappearance a few months later necessitated a new course, this time including laser ablation therapy and chemoembolization. Aided by friend Alana Stewart, Fawcett documented the highs and lows of her battle with the disease.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton (again)

Actor Johnny Depp while sporting bright orange hair, pink lipstick and a ghost-white face re-teams up with director Tim Burton - who he worked with on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, (a partnership which has grossed close to a billion dollars in just 6 films) - and whose style of eerily creepy characters is set to continue in the new adaptation of Alice of Wonderland.

Adapting Through the Looking Glass

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is based on the Lewis Carroll’s book “Through The Looking Glass“, which is a sequel to Alice In Wonderland set 10 years after Alice’s first venture into the strange world. Through the Looking Glass follows Alice again, now 17, returning to Wonderland for the second time despite having no recollection of her first visit.

Mixture of live-action, motion-captured imaging and CGI for Alice Project

Shooting for the film began in September of last year with a mixture of live-action, motion-captured imaging and CGI planned for the feature. How it will all come together, though, is still a mystery even for Burton himself: “I’m not quite sure yet - doing a big budget movie is an organic process and gives the opportunity to experiment.

It’s something that was presented to me and I’d never seen really a movie version of the story that I like, so I thought I’d just give it a shot.”

Alice is also set for a release in 3D with Burton having announced a two picture 3D deal with Disney.
“I like the 3-D aspect of it, I think it fits the material very well, and it doesn’t give me a headache like it used to - I think it’s good for anything. There are other uses than having spears stuck into your face - I think there are more visceral, emotional uses, especially if you use lots of textures.”
If anything, this film should be an absolute visual delight as Burton portrays his dark, gothic worlds with every technological advancement known to cinema.

A Walk trough Memory Lane..

MTV Blog recently Published a great article by Adam Rosenberg

In which he acknowledges some of the 20 film adaptations of Lewis Carroll’s story, including several foreign versions, an anime reinterpretation and a pornographic film. (Not included sorry boys)

He takes us down memory lane trough some of the more famous adaptations of the story all the way from 1933 to the recent Disney adaptation that is obviously the most famous of the bunch.

Take a look at this 1933 version of the film stars Charlotte Henry in the titular role.

Here we see her sitting with the King of Hearts (Alec B Francis), discussing important matters.

This following is, without a doubt, the most well-known “Alice” of all-time. Disney’s 1951 musical version.

This is definitely one to watch.

2010 Academy Awards will feature some changes to Best Picture category and more

“After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year,” said Ganis. “The final outcome, of course, will be the same - one Best Picture winner - but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009.”

For more than a decade during the Academy’s earlier years, the Best Picture category welcomed more than five films; for nine years there were 10 nominees. The 16th Academy Awards (1943) was the last year to include a field of that size; “Casablanca” was named Best Picture. (In 1931/32, there were eight nominees and in 1934 and 1935 there were 12 nominees.)

Currently, the Academy is presenting a bicoastal screening series showcasing the 10 Best Picture nominees of 1939, arguably one of Hollywood’s greatest film years. Best Picture nominees of that year include such diverse classics as “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “Stagecoach,” “The Wizard of Oz” and Best Picture winner “Gone with the Wind.”

“Having 10 Best Picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize,” commented Ganis. “I can’t wait to see what that list of ten looks like when the nominees are announced in February.”

The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 2. The Oscar® ceremony honoring films for 2009 will again take place at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network.

While doing some press recently for his new film Public Enemies (also starring Batman himself Christian Bale) Depp was asked outright if he would be the Riddler in the followup to The Dark Knight, and he said, “I’d definitely juggle it.”

Personally, I think that Johnny Depp is enjoying being a top-billing actor and keeping the studios guessing about what project he wants to tackle next.

Like Eddie says, “He is not exactly signing his name in blood on the Warner Bros. dotted line” but at least its a start and keeps the conversational flow on the Third Installment of the new Batman Generation. No one knows anything about this film as nothing is confirmed as of yet, but Johnny Depp would be a great addition to the already incredible cast of the Batman:Begins and The Dark Knight films.

There is also a bit of buzz going around about Phillip Seymour Hoffman being cast as the Penguin.

Not only were the special effects and budget really big on “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” so were the on set parties.

This according to Tyrese Gibson who said after the filming he would throw massive parties during the shoot, including one with 5,600 people on an aircraft carrier.

“There was just so much energy on the set. Michael runs a really tight ship. He just keeps everyone on the edge and at full-throttle. Man, I’d think, if I don’t throw a party, I’m going to go crazy right now,” said the singer turned actor who plays USAF Master Sergeant Epps in the film.

That interesting, but ultimately pointless, information was the norm at the online press conferences for Transformers held on June 19 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

In the absence of Shia LaBeouf (who was booked doing television interviews), the biggest gets were director Michael Bay and LaBeouf’s co-star Megan Fox. They were joined by Gibson and fellow actors Josh Duhamel, Kevin Dunn, and Ramon Rodriguez. Another more technical panel included co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and visual effects supervisor Scott Farrar of ILM.

Michael Bay just made it in time for his conference, reportedly coming to the hotel straight from a plane that originated in Moscow. He was quick to let everyone know, on numerous occasions, that “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is “summer fun. It’s a robot movie.”

But being as none of the robots were in attendance (we’ll get back to them in a minute), we were left with the actors who had to interact with them. Though he spoke the least of anyone on the panel, being the newest member of the cast, Ramon Rodriguez (who plays Sam’s roommate Leo and can also be seen as Denzel Washington’s colleague in “The Taking of Pelham 123”) told one of the best stories.

Rodriguez is one of two actors who get to interact directly with Devastator, the evil Decepticon who is made up of seven already giant robots to form one HUGE one. (ILM’s Scott Farrar said that those scenes were the biggest ILM has ever had to create and one of the shots literally made a computer explode.) In the scene shown in the trailer where Devastator is sucking up sand, Rodriguez had to hold on for dear life and popped his shoulder.

“We were shooting the Devastator scene and I had to hold onto this pole. Michael Bay thought it would be a really good idea to bring out two fans that blow 100 miles per hour each and put them right in front of my face. I had sand, soot and dirt blowing right in my face. I had two guys behind me with wires attached to my ankles, pulling me. Not enough yet. We need cars. So we brought two cars and he literally had them attached to a hydraulic crane, flipped literally inches above my head. They guys were yanking at the tables and, yeah, on one of the takes my shoulder popped out and we continued rolling. That was probably the shot you used. Thank you, Mike,” Rodriguez said.

Then there’s Megan Fox. Oh Megan Fox. In person, she is even more beautiful than she is on screen – if that’s possible - but also seemed much more restrained than she did in a recent Entertainment Weekly feature. She discussed how “Transformers” has given her the ability to do films “I don’t even feel like I deserve to be a part of” like the upcoming comic book adaptation “Jonah Hex” and how she had to force herself to watch the film by drinking “an entire glass of champagne so I could get through the sitting of it.”

But the best story, at least for the guys out there, was the one about how Michael Bay made her try on all of her outfits while he was in the process of auditioning several, young male actors.

“I had like 18 different outfits. It was white jean shorts and then a pink belly shirt. Light motorcycle boots. I was wearing them and Mike was selecting them in the process of auditioning,” Fox said.

Unfortunately, girls don’t get a similar scene that was conceived specifically for them.

“Tyrese offered to be introduced in the second movie by doing a shirtless carwash scene with Optimus [Prime], but Mike didn’t go for it,” Josh Duhamel said.

But, as Michael Bay said again and again, this is a robot movie. And one of the major issues people are going to have with “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” are the Autobots known as The Twins, Mudflap and Skids, voiced by Reno Wilson and Tom Kenny respectively. They play a major role as the film’s comic relief and Bay spoke about the soon to be controversial characters.

“I wanted two kinds of younger Transformers. But with those two guys, we used the guy who played SpongeBob and another actor. What’s interesting is that, when you work with voice-actors, especially with The Twins, they did a lot of improv for their parts. We liked their improv and, from there, we would animate to their stuff. When you’re doing character animation and you’re building the character, it’s not like an actor where you shoot the scene and you’ve got it and you move on. With animation, you get the dialogue and then some animation and then a bit more of the dialogue and you keep going back and forth and it just builds until you have the shot you want. I just wanted something that would appeal to younger kids that seemed to really gravitate to those two characters. It’s like ‘The Little Engine That Could’ with the Devastator scene,” Bay said.

Here are some other geeky side notes that came out of the press conferences.

- Decepticon Soundwave (the boom box/cassette tape guy from the original show) plays an integral part in this film. And though actor Frank Welker, who originally voiced the character in the cartoon, returns, Soundwave’s deep and distorted voice doesn’t. Screenwriter Alex Kurtzman confirmed that they had that voice in the film for a long time during production but ultimately had to change it. “We actually tried it. We had his voice like that for a long time. What we found in the mix was that it was impossible to understand what he was saying.”

- Most of the actors and even the director, as of June 19, had yet to see the finished movie. The reason? It wasn’t locked and ready to go until the previous Saturday, June 13. That’s roughly 10 days before it opens to the public.

- President Obama gets name dropped in the film and there’s a simple reason for it. Michael Bay told the story. “I was walking in a Vegas airport and he was walking — by himself — carrying a hanging bag over his shoulder. This was after I had just seen him at the beginning of his campaign. I said, ‘Hey, I saw you the other night and liked what you had to say.’ I introduced myself and he said, ‘What do you do?’ and I said, ‘I’m a director.’ He said, ‘What movies?’ I said and he said, ‘Oh, you’re a big-ass director. I’ve seen a bunch of your movies.’ That’s why I decided to put him in.”

- And if any fans want to party like they are the stars of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” head to your local Chili’s. That’s where much of the actor’s time was spent while on set in New Mexico because, according to Megan Fox and Michael Bay, because that was the only restaurant around.

Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) is a 25 year old who lives with her best friend Suze (Krysten Ritter) in Suze’s flat (paying her friend rent that is well below market value), in a trendy part of town. Rebecca has a very boring job writing for a financial magazine. She has a shopping addiction and her crap job doesn’t pay enough. Her bills are piling up, so she tries cutting back (complete fiasco), then she tries making more money (another fiasco). Eventually, Becky discovers a story that she is truly invested in. Exposing the story gets the attention of a (male, need I say more?) colleague that she hasn’t quite figured out yet. Some drama ensues as she snags the guy, and she attempts to pay off her ever-growing debt.

One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that there’s a connection to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he can’t remember a thing anymore about that period of his life. Intrigued by this riddle, he decides to meet and interview old friends and comrades around the world. He needs to discover the truth about that time and about himself. As Ari delves deeper and deeper into the mystery, his memory begins to creep up in surreal images…

Michael Bay's robotic brawl, 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen', opens nationwide June 23

The more I think about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the more I feel it’s two movies. There’s the awesome action and robots which are the reason you pay for a ticket then there’s everything else: a hodgepodge of unfunny humor, wild story, offensive characters and general dumb foolery that is trying to please every audience all at once. What would have really pleased every audience is making a coherent movie. There’s plenty to enjoy here, but just be prepared to pay the price.

Synopsis: An extraneous piece of the All Spark from the first movie sets off a chain of events that brings an ancient Decepticon named the Fallen back to life. And he’s pissed.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen - Big ass robots, big ass explosions and a little tiny story. That’s what the trailers for “Revenge of the Fallen” have been selling: action that’s bigger and better than ever. And while of course there would be a story in there, it didn’t seem as important as the robots and a half naked Megan Fox.

What I’d Heard - Trade reviews and international critics all seemed to agree. This is a huge, epic action movie with incredible special effects and not much more. Basically, they just said it was a bigger version of the first one. That’s fine with me.

What I Wanted - A film comparable to the first “Transformers.” What made that movie so successful was that the giant f’ing robots didn’t become the focus for a good 30-45 minutes. In the meantime there were some great character moments. I wanted at least some of that to go along with my metal on metal clashing and fireballs.

EXPERIENCE

What Turned Me On - Optimus Prime. The leader of the Autobots is even more kick ass  this time around and has an incredible one on three battle in the forest that has to be seen to be believed, especially in full IMAX. Plus, fans of the first film are rewarded as the experiences the characters had in the original result in an unspoken trust throughout this one.

What Turned Me Off - Unfortunately, much more than turned me on. First, the film is wildly uneven. It goes from deadly serious to goofy, then has goofy moments in the middle of serious ones and extraneous sequences that really should have been cut (two words: Kitten Calendars). Second, the script peppers in several moments that are such obvious rip offs of films like “The Matrix,” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” that it just begs of laziness on the part of the writers. Take those things, add in an abundance of cheesy one-liners, several very annoying and terribly voiced Transformers and an almost too confusing plot and the stretches between the admittedly awesome moments become almost intolerable.

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking - Michael Bay needs an editor and someone to speak up to him. If the film had cut much of the sophomoric humor and streamlined some of the long and winding story, the film could have worked. Plus, there are some chill inducing moments in there that should have had more impact. For example, the much-ballyhooed Devastator is beautiful, but completely pointless. If there was less crap between the good stuff, the film would have felt stronger despite its other flaws.

I Left Saying - I’m terribly disappointed. Transformers 2 is far inferior to the first film and I really wanted more. In that film we related to Sam Witwicky as he evolved as a person. Now, he’s just a normal, confident guy. He’s basically Shia LaBeouf if he wasn’t a famous actor. And not having a character to relate to, coupled with the film’s general goofiness and sporadic action scenes, really hurt it.

Expiry Date - Except the prerequisite huge opening weekend with the ensuing word of mouth really slowing the film down. It’s going to be a big hit because bad reviews can’t hurt a huge film like this but people won’t be recommending it to their friends. Most will enjoy the two and a half hour ride - there is plenty to like, especially in IMAX - but in the end, the film itself just doesn’t mesh.  The story stinks, the characters - except for Optimus Prime - stink and 4 or 5 great moments can’t save the huge number of bad ones.

As you can see from the pictures its VERY Tim Burtonish, almost to the extreme. While this may be what you wanted/expected, some people are worried that the movie may just be loaded with weird and colorful CGI, but low on substance. At least thats the opinion of Collider.com’s take on the Alice in Wonderland new pictures.

Those who have grown curiouser and curiouser about what the offbeat reinventor of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory might conjure up in his version of Alice in Wonderland can feast their eyes on this array of concept art and publicity images, due to hang in movie theaters this week to promote the March 5, 2010, release.

“It has been Burton-ized” is how producer Richard Zanuck describes the director’s vision of the Lewis Carroll classic. Many elements are familiar, from the enigmatic Caterpillar (Alan Rickman) to the fierce Jabberwock (Christopher Lee). But none has been presented in this sort of visually surreal fashion.

“We finished shooting in December after only 40 days,” Zanuck says. Now the live action is being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D.

The new Astro Boy movie features voice-acting by Freddie Highmore, Eugene Levy (does this guy ever sleep?), Kristen Bell, Donald Sutherland, Nicholas Cage and Nathan Lane with David Bowers directing.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen - The trailers didn’t look too promising. The gigantic billboards hanging all over town? Even less so.

What I’d Heard - The second prehistoric comedy of the summer. Of the two, my prediction was that Land of the Lost would be the one to see. But considering what a letdown the Ferrell comedy turned out to be, perhaps Year One could turn out to be a diamond in the rough.

What I Wanted - Look, we aren’t talking high art here. If this one makes me laugh and does it with some level of consistency, then it counts as a success.

EXPERIENCE

What Turned Me On - Year One stumbles out of the gate with a heavy dose of schticky humor that offers little promise of what’s to come. The danger of a one-note Saturday Night Live joke lasting 90 minutes appeared to be a distinct possibility. But then, something happened. A funny joke here, a minor laugh there, a clever little knock at a historical moment over there… Soon, we were off and running. The laughs aren’t big knee-slappers, but they are peppered throughout and occur often enough for an enjoyable experience.

Michael Cera’s unique brand of low energy humor offers many of Year One’s funniest moments. Jack Black is doing his usual thing; funny at points, but without Cera, Black offers nothing more than a retread of the dreadful Nacho Libre. Black’s humor works in doses when it’s part of an ensemble. In addition to Cera, David Cross and Oliver Platt lend memorable goofy supporting characters that compete nose for nose with the leads for laughs. Pay attention for an endless list of cameo appearances including, to name just a few, Ramis, Paul Rudd and Bill Hader.

What Turned Me Off - Well, as I mentioned above, Jack Black’s schtick is wearing thin these days, but when he isn’t the center attention, his brand of smarmy humor can illicit a few laughs and avoid being too grating. Year One is at its weakest when it goes for the most obvious jokes, but as the humor branches out and gets weirder, the laughs work regardless of high concept plot devices. At one point Cera must give a bare-chested Platt an oil rubdown, a cringe-inducing moment in any setting. As with any comedy of this nature, there are a few clunkers, but overall there are more hits than misses.

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking - Michael Cera can do no wrong. Either he picks good material or he elevates even the mediocre stuff. Either way, he’s well on his way to being a big comedy star.

I Left Saying - Who knew this would be the best prehistoric comedy I’d see this summer? In all seriousness, I went in expecting very little and received a present surprise. There aren’t any huge laughs, but there’s plenty of entertainment value to recommend this one for some silly summer popcorn-munching fun.

Expiry Date - Don’t go in expecting a comedy masterpiece or anything, but Year One is consistently funny and charmingly silly. While it falls short of The Hangover’s rapid-fire assault, it’s pure, unapologetic, dumb fun. And, you heard it here first: Year One is the best prehistoric comedy of 2009.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen - Every episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm and every Woody Allen movie. The two seemed a perfect match akin to chocolate and peanut butter.

What I’d Heard - Larry David is a Jew from Brooklyn who falls for a younger woman. Hmm, where have I heard that before?

What I Wanted - Curb Your Enthusiasm meets Manhattan.

EXPERIENCE

What Turned Me On - For as often as you might often want to slap some sense into Larry David during his endlessly entertaining adventures on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, it’s the kind of happy accident from which you can’t look away. David is charming in his own curmudgeonly way, though he is best contained in television’s 30-minute doses. David’s trademark wit is immediately apparent as his character, Boris Yellnikoff, an even more extreme version of the “negative Nelly” persona for which he’s become so well known, breaks the fourth wall in the film’s opening moments by addressing the audience. Yellnikoff’s theories on life are so bleak as to make David’s own seem positively sunny by comparison.

David has a certain ease on screen that runs contrary to his character’s negative rants. Paired with such master thespians as Patricia Clarkson, Ed Begley Jr. and even the coquettishly appealing Evan Rachel Wood, David has immediate palpable chemistry with the entire cast.

What Turned Me Off - Perhaps it’s sometimes best to choose just the peanut butter or the chocolate. While I enjoy Allen’s movies and David’s work, this incarnation got to be a bit much at a certain point. The character of Boris winds up feeling like watching David’s Curb persona filtered through the mind of Woody Allen. While David is generally walking a very thin line between identifiable and certifiable, the addition of Allen’s sensibilities takes him over the edge. Boris is such a jerk you wonder why in the world any of the other characters in the movie would ever want to be around him. More than that, you start to wonder why you should want to watch him for 90 minutes?

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking - I prefer my Woody and my Larry in separate doses. The combo is just too much. This seemed like such a good idea in theory, but watching it play out feels like a pointless exercise. Both Allen and David need to branch out for their next movies.

I Left Saying - Can Woody possibly come up with a new topic besides an older man and a younger woman? I know its a fascination of his, but good lord, I think he’s said everything that could possibly be said on the topic.

Expiry Date - In time, Whatever Works will exist as a mere curiosity for David fans and necessary viewing for Allen completists. While it is better than some of Allen’s more dubious recent material, it’s a far cry from his best work. Check this one out on cable and maybe watch it in a few parts so as not to ingest too much negativity all at once.
