Not only is Martin posting blogs about what the latest news is with his movie, he’s also told us about an open casting call happening at the end of this month. The search is underway for a talented young (25ish) black actor to play the part of Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, the first African-American to play in the NBA back in the 1950s. Guigui has already told us about the interest of A-list actors in playing Sweetwater’s coach and teammates but for the part of the main guy, anyone with the acting chops could land the part and kick off their movie career in a huge way. Read about where and when the open casting call is taking place right here on MovieSet. We’ve even got copies of the sides to help you prepare for your audition and have created a Facebook event page to keep you informed on the latest news. Just one thing: if you land the gig ‘cuz of MovieSet, I call dibs on your first interview!

With the arrival of May there comes two big events associated with movies: the arrival of the summer blockbuster season and the annual Cannes Film Festival. The world’s most prestigious screening party attracts an international crowd and attention from the worldwide media. Red carpet screenings are going on everywhere, tuxedo rental stores have next to no inventory and young slender starlets seek to attract the attention of cameras, news crew and the eyes of movie producers. Hot buttered popcorn and soda pop are replaced with caviar and champagne . For one solid week everybody who is anybody in film roll into Cannes, conduct business, watch movies, network like crazy and party like it’s 1999. And MovieSet is going to be there this year!

MovieSet will be giving you on-the-scene reports from Cannes, telling you what’s going down, who’s doing what and what the vibe is like at this year’s film fest. While the fest kicks off on the 14th, keep your eyes peeled before then for the start of our reports. We’ll be trying to publish as many photographs as possible and if we can take some snaps of what the stars are wearing, we’ll do so and then show you the goods. For now, settle back and get prepared for the coming ride.

According to Gary Osifchin, the North American marketing director for Stride, “Since gamers are one of our most supportive groups, we’ve been looking for ways to return the favor. And what better way is there to get gamers’ backs than by helping them rescue their cherished videogames from the clutches of Uwe Boll?” To help motivate the masses, Stride has pledged to give a free pack of gum to every person that signs their name on the Stop Dr. Uwe Boll petition. Now that’s a lot of potential chewing possibility.

But before the petition supports can begin warming up their mouth muscles in anticipation of their free pack of gum there is a big pothole that has to be overcome. Stride has requested that the petition has to meet its goal of one million signatures by May14 in order for their promise to be kept. That gives the troops only five more days and with the petition name count standing at 260K, there is a lot more ground to be covered if people out there really want their free chewing gum. So far I haven’t heard any counteroffer from Boll…unless…wait a minute! What if this is all some sort of crazy idea dreamed up by Uwe Boll in the first place! Maybe it was him that got the ball rolling with Stride?! Could this be some kind of crazy as a fox publicity stunt to get promotion for Uwe’s latest, “Postal”? I wouldn’t put it past that sly German guy.

So what is Steven Spielberg offering to us if we don’t like “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?”

MovieSet has three brand spanking new film pages and three trailers to show you. One is an animated tale set in a fantastic world of talking trees and animals, one addresses the controversial issue of illegal immigration by placing it in today’s world of modern cowboys and the final picture is set in a very bad neighborhood — literally. Let’s see what we’ve got.

“Spirit of the Forest“is about a group of animals that have to stop an ruthless businessman and evil woman from cutting down their forest home to make way for a highway. Four critters — a mouse named Piorno and three moles named Furi, Linda and Cebolo — will do anything to put a crink into the development plans. From director David Rubin comes this family friendly computer animated tale featuring the voices of Sean Astin (”The Lord of the Rings”), Anjelica Huston (”The Addams Family”), Ron Perlman (”Hellboy”) and Giovanni Ribisi (”Boiler Room”).

Writer/director Will James Moore made a modern day action western that addresses a social issue that’s on the tip of everyone’s tongue, illegal immigration.”Cowboy Smoke” is the story of Joe, a young man who wants to change the direction of his life by following in the bootsteps of real cowboys. After getting fired from his old job Joe heads on down to Texas to find work as an apprentice cowboy. There he finds that his mental picture of the cowboy lifestyle, where right and wrong were supposed to be as simple as white and black, aren’t as clearly defined as he imagined.

Our last movie has a title that makes it pretty easy to get what the show’s story is about:”The Last Bad Neighborhood“. Mack (Paul Logan) is an enforcer living in Docklands, the last hard bastion of street living inside the ultra-controlled metropolis he calls his home. Mack’s life consists of running errands and enforcing the will of his thus boss, Bishop. While life in Docklands is hard and dangerous, it’s also free from the corporate oversight of big business that has engulfed the rest of the city. But when the suits and ties want to grab the city’s one last free sector it will be up to Mack and the rest of those living in Docklands to fight back against the machine. It sounds like “Escape From New York” meets “RoboCop”, don’t it? I can dig that!

Watch the trailers for this trio of new films and then sound off below as to what you think of ‘em. Does one grab your attention more than the rest?

We’ve launched several new film pages here on MovieSet and so let’s do another round-up to show you what’s hot and happening around the site:

“Bad Biology” is a twisted romance from director Frank Henenlotter and follows a young man and woman who are obsessed about seeking sexual fulfillment. When they meet their chemisty winds up producing explosive consequences.

“Kettle of Fish” is from writer/director Claudia Myers and is about a musician who finds himself falling in love with an English biologist that studies frogs. With a logline like that you have to check it out, plus it’s got a neat poster that encapsulates the pic’s quirkiness. Matthew Modine, Gina Gershon and Fisher Stevens star in it.

For you horror enthusiasts out there you need to look at our listing for “Knock Knock“. In the tradition of Halloween and Friday the 13th comes a terrifying journey of revenge and bloodlust, as a group of high school students pay the ultimate price for their parent’s transgressions. Teens and a crazed maniac go hand-in-hand, don’t they?

“Dead-Wood” is another scary movie and yeah, it involves more young people poking their noses into places where they simply shouldn’t be poking anything that they want to keep into. This time it’s four friends that think they’re taking a break from the city by heading out into the woods for a peaceful, relaxing weekend. Yeah, right! Soon things take a sinister turn when a mysterious girl appears in their camp looking for her boyfriend. Something evil is waiting for them in the woods and it soon begins to stalk them one by one. Haven’t these city folk watched “The Blair Witch Project”? DON’T. GO. INTO. THE. WOODS. Duh!

The trailer for “The Red Awn” has made its debut on MovieSet. A 50 year old father leaves his wife and son back in their hometown and goes off to the city in order to earn a living. Five years pass, during that time his wife passes away and his son grows up in the countryside alone and directionless.

Finally and on a lighter note, check out our listing for “Puckheads“. If you love hockey or even if you don’t understand why some people can bet obsessive about the game then you owe it to yourself to find out the answer why. Venturing deep into the mayhem of the Stanley Cup playoffs, filmmaker Simon Dekker explores a world of ritual, arousal and belief – and brings the audience inside the experience to become one with the magic that is fan kind.

Now none of these movies may have Robert Downey Jr. inside a super-powerful suit of armor that can fly and take on jet fighters in the sky but when was that ever a crime?

Before she leaves New York City to start her life anew, she bonds with a cafe owner (played by Jude Law) and then starts sending him postcards from her new life in Memphis. Elizabeth encounters other unusual characters, each at a stage in their lives where imminent change is about to take place. I know, it’s getting to be a Uwe Boll lovefest around here but when a director challenges another director to a boxing fight, you better bet that I’m gonna blog about it. And that’s exactly what Boll did to none other than “Transformers”, “Pearl Harbor” and “The Rock” director Michael Bay today.
Here’s what the German General said to the Bayanator:

“Hi, here’s Uwe Boll and you see my outfit so you know what’s coming up now basically. Michael Bay responded to my note about him in a very insulting way for me. He said that he doesn’t care about me and this was very insulting because I care about him and I think that with the money he has for his movies, he sucks big time. I think it’s time to meet in the ring actually.

“So it’s my message to Michael Bay, Michael, in between your pool parties in LA or your casting sessions with the strippers you should start training now. And I’m sure you look good, you look thin. I saw you at the Hollywood Film Festival, I think you’re a fit guy and you do like private karate Asia bullshit crap fighting stuff in LA where you think you’re super cool that you do that with your 500 bucks per hour trainer.

“So let’s meet in the ring in September or October. Pay-per-view. Mandalay Bay. Las Vegas. Twelve rounds of boxing. Boll against Bay.

“It’s also independent against the studio system and I think that this day in Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas we will clear it up who is not only the better director who is also able to fight more for that what he wants.

“OK Michael, if you see that message I expect that your people contacting me, it will be all arranged. We even make money with it, and so let’s go for it. Boll against Bay. It’s on.”

Bay was the guy that told Uwe Boll that he was a “sad being”. However, it should be noted that Boll fired first and said that he wasn’t a “fucking retard like Michael Bay”. However again, there are some that will count Bay’ s 1998 film “Armageddon” as the true first firing shot in this war.

Bay has yet to respond to Boll’s challenge. The last time that the “House of the Dead” director challenged someone to a boxing match it was when he invited several of his most vocal online critics to step into the ring. Boll won all four match-ups.

Want to see the Boll-man issue the challenge with your own eyes? Knock yourself out:

Who wouldn’t want to watch this fight?

If you haven’t been following the 2008 Democratic candidate race, what rock have you been living under? It’s getting down to the wire between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and even though the latter candidate is ahead that doesn’t mean for one second that the former First Lady is ready to throw in the towel. If Rocky Balboa taught the world anything it’s to never give up, right? And after Clinton’s win in Pennsylvania last night’s primary she may be headed for her own version of “Rocky II” and starting her comeback.

But now Hillary has one more difficulty to overcome as a certain five star U.S. general and the most wanted man on the planet have thrown their support behind Barack Obama. Take a look at this new video and see who I’m talking about.

With Hillary talking about blowing Iran away and Patton saying that the war would be over if Barack wins the presidential election, will this be the tipping point that sends Obama to the White House? How will Clinton respond? Maybe she can get Harrison Ford to endorse her presidential bid.

Loads of things are happening across MovieSet that you need to know about and I’m not just referring to that short movie showing Marilyn Monroe giving private dictation to someone. Here’s the latest round-up of news bites to show you the great lengths that the MovieSet team are going to bring you the best movie news:

- fan generated short videos celebrating the upcoming BMX racing film “Freestyle” starring “High School Musical 2″ star Corbin Bleu have gone up on the MovieSet page. The film’s producers selected their favorite fan films from a contest that was recently held and we’ve got their top picks ready and waiting for your ocular digestion.

- We have launched pages for the now in production romantic drama “In a Parallel Universe” and the gripping dramatic feature “It’s a Free World“. Since “Free World” has wrapped principal photography we now have the trailer for it available for download on MovieSet.

- Uwe Boll continues his steamroller ride of destruction and merriment by offering us this revealing endorsement of the new “Indiana Jones” movie by the legendary World War II commander General Patton. Wow. Patton sure has some harsh words to say about “Postal” and director Uwe Boll. If I were Uwe I wouldn’t want to get too mad at the General and challenge him to a boxing match; that war hero is made of steel like Iron Man (which is not opening on May 23 against “Postal”, I just thought that you should know that.) There is also new “Postal” wallpaper to impress your co-workers with available on our page.

- MovieSet has just learned that “Super Amigos“, Arturo Perez Torres’ documentary about five Mexican wrestlers masquerading as superheroes and fighting against corruption, homophobia, pollution, poverty and for animal rights in Mexico City, will screen at the Latin America Film Series on Monday April 21st at 8 PM. If I wore a mask as cool as any one of these guys I bet my life would be a lot more colorful.

Have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday! And feel free to ask me questions so I can start working on a post about interesting mail. The stranger the question, the better the answer.
