In all regards, you should not watch ‘Antichrist‘. My position as a reviewer is to guide you into seeing or not seeing a film by providing my own opinions. Throughout this review, I shall remark a lot of the achievements of this film, but I warn you this is not a recommendation.

So why shouldn’t you see a film that I will label as technically good? When you look as Lars Von Trier’s canon, there are a variety of films designed to make you feel uneasy. His greatest films in my mind (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves) are films that I have no interest in experiencing for a second time. Von Trier has the uncanny ability to delve in to the dark parts of the human psyche and create remarkable works of art from it. With those films, the audience also takes part in his characters’ downward spirals but it is appreciated because these characters are worth caring about and he is a very competent director. Now with Antichrist, he may have crossed the line into pure misery.

Charlotte Gainsbourg & Willem Dafoe in 'Antichrist'

Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg play a nameless couple whose child is killed in the opening scene of the film. What follows is a demented journey of grief and pain, which is more frightening than insightful. Their destruction plays like a feature version of Un Chien Andalou equipped with images that are forever scared in my brain. Dafoe and Gainsbourg act through this expertly with unflinching and raw decisions. In fact everything about this film is done expertly. Von Trier experiments and succeeds with his lighting techniques that I’ve never seen done before. The film is shot like a work of art, but more in the vein of Hieronymus Bosch than Monet. (Yes I only know who Bosch is because I read Michael Connelly. Don’t judge me.

Why I don’t rank Antichrist as highly as the rest of Von Trier’s work? For the art overpowers the characters and the story. Everything felt like a device to put the audience on the same level von Trier is on. I embrace film because of its unique way to tell a story. When storytelling is compromised I tend to lose respect for the filmmaker, which is what has happened to me towards Stanley Kubrick, David Fincher, and David Lynch. (Eat it up film nerds!). The reason people seem to be attracted towards Antichrist is its use of compromise. Much in the same vein as Salo, people comment on seeing this film as an achievement in tolerance. They made it through and were able to blog about it. However this does not compare as effective as Requiem For a Dream or even Cries and Whispers because for me the experience of Antichrist isn’t worth it.

Writer/Director John Lee Hancock on Sandra Bullock in ‘The Blind Side’

If there is a single genre of films I have not viewed enough of, it would definitely be documentary. I have seen enough to know which are good and which are bad, and it helps to have a film class with a music documentary filmmaker this semester.

All of the back story aside, I viewed “Michael Jackson’s This is It” this past weekend, and was blown away.
In the past I brought up themes of nostalgia, especially with the re-releases of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2,” but the Michael Jackson concert/ rehearsal/ documentary film brings back the glory of his greatest hits. I was thrown into the past, remember the time I first saw the music video to “Thriller” or singing “Heal the World” as a preschooler. The film delivers both these hits, and many more, only leaving out very few chart toppers.

Essentially “This is It” is a glorified concert film, but it expands much further into the development, the grit, and the endurance necessary to put a production on stage. The feature charts the entire planning and production of the concert up until Jackson’s death. The beauty of the film is that never does it glorify his death. That fact seems to be a side note for viewers to already know while watching it. The film jumps right into Jackson’s announcement for a 50-performance engagement at London’s O2 Arena, and immediately charts several rehearsals to put together the tour’s catalogue. It is very intriguing to show the progression of each song, with some regular practices and other cuts of dress rehearsals full of special effects. Spliced between songs are snippets of special features content, ranging from green screen filming to dance try-outs to costume design. I found these to be the more interesting parts of the film, with the massive scale of the production and all of the elements being created.

Certain things wowed me with the film, starting with some amazing editing and shooting through the opening sequences. The press conference announcement segment is cut rapidly and has the same pacing that “District 9” had earlier this year. The frantic chaos set the pace for how high energy the performances to come would be. As a performer, Jackson definitely still has all the talent of old. His dancing was clean and articulate, with some new style thrown in. His voice sounded crisp, and not feeble, as his appearance sometimes would project. The man, no matter personal affairs and such, still had the charisma and power to sell out arenas and bring crowds to their feet.

Other intriguing parts are certain behind the scenes looks. The best for me was an innovative feature. Behind the stage there was a giant screen, which would have 3D projections. The concert creators, and the director Kenny Ortega, filmed in front of monstrous green screens, to create new footage for “Thriller,” “Smooth Criminal,” and “Beat It.” I loved the “Smooth Criminal” content, not only because it’s my favorite tune of his, but also because of the brilliant film noir short film that Ortega made to play on the screen. All of the footage was shot with 3D cameras for the audience to experience in 3D. Now watching a movie with 3D glasses is somewhat annoying, so maybe it wouldn’t have transferred to a concert very well, but it shows how much Jackson still pushed the boundaries.

The film allows you to get completely lost in the music and the concert experience. Even pulling away from the performance feels natural and enlightening. There is never a dull beat throughout the film, and I even found myself grooving along to the songs. The film opens with some of his lesser-known hits, but just wait till the film hits stride and the mega-hits start rolling. I believe that this concert could have rivaled U2 for production value, and it just reminds me even more that I will never be able to see new material from the King of Pop. Take the chance to experience the last material of Jackson’s career, and once again get lost in the music that defined cool.

As we wrap Halloween Movie Month at MovieSet.com, I decided to check out a scary movie. No I didn’t go out and see Saw VI, Cirque de Freak or the horrifying looking Couples Retreat. I decided to check out the latest Coen Brothers’ creation: A Serious Man.

Now I’m sure all of you’re are screaming at your computer screens in protest demanding that I rightfully categorize it as a drama or even a drama-edy not a horror film. Now let’s just look at what constitutes a horror movie.

To me the effective horror movies are ones where bad things are happening to relatively good people. What’s creepier than a seemingly unstoppable larger-than-life force that is out to get you? In the case of A Serious Man, that force is God or just terrible luck. Much like the biblical Job, Larry Gopnik is having everything that could go wrong occur in a very short amount of time. On every front he is hit: from a marital, financial, professional and religious standpoint. This predicament is scarier than any Michael Myers or Vince Vaughn for this is something completely intangible.

Throughout all of this, Larry keeps insisting to anyone who would listen that he hasn’t done anything wrong. Yet he hasn’t really done anything great as well. Is doing nothing wrong, something wrong? This is one of many paradoxes examined in the film. No easy solutions are given no matter how desperately the characters want them. Larry and his family are devout members of the Jewish community during the 1960s so everyone around him keeps telling him to turn to the rabbis for advice. However all he receives are empty parables and a prescription to continue to have faith in God.

From that description, I seem to be accidentally inferring that the Coens are saying that religion is unsatisfying. I do not believe that for the simple reason of I don’t know yet. This is my first review for this site where I am not 100% certain on my interpretations of the directors’ intentions. I apologize for having only seen this film once. This is not an act of mental laziness on my part because so much of the film is up to interpretation. Interpretations that I feel will change as time goes by for me, much like theories about real life.

Do not take my indecisions as a strike against the film (or hopefully not me). A Serious Man is a film I call “intellectually arousing.” I never want a film to be disposable. You can determine a film’s impact by how long you think about it afterwards. This is a film that academically satisfies its viewers, but on a surface level it is flawlessly entertaining. This is the genius of the Coen Brothers. Thanks the Roger Deakins the shots are always astounding and the actors, especially Michael Stuhlbarg as Larry, know how to sell the comedy and tragedy of the situation. This is exactly the kind of film I latch onto and adore. So check it out as, at the very least, an unconventional Halloween viewing.

Synopsis: The story follows an ordinary mans search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and F-Troop is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a quiet midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous colleagues, Sy Ableman, who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry.

Larry’s unemployable brother Arthur is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. While his wife and Sy Ableman blithely make new domestic arrangements, and his brother becomes more and more of a burden, an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry’s chances for tenure at the university. Also, a graduate student seems to be trying to bribe him for a passing grade while at the same time threatening to sue him for defamation. Plus, the beautiful woman next door torments him by sunbathing nude. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person; a mensch, a serious man?

Twilight’s Edward & Bella

Dressing up as Twilight’s Bella and Edward is possibly one of the easiest and most recognizable costumes to pull off.  Your own wardrobe should suffice, but where you’re going to need to spend your moola is on white face paint and hair products.

First up, to disguise yourself as a successful Edward you’ll need 3 main articles of clothing: grey-blue jeans, navy collard or un-collard shirt and a grey pea coat. Now its time to break out the white face paint and hair gel.

Good luck with this, I suggest you look long and hard at pictures of Robert Pattinson before attempting to reconstruct it on your own head. Don’t be afraid to get into character at parties! Stick to dark corners that are ideal for teenage brooding and when speaking to others, never raise your voice above an evocative whisper.

Hair: Robert Pattinson/ Edward Cullen is known for those tousled up-brushed locks. To create this look, you will need to cover your hair in gel or mousse. Mess your hair and comb the front up and out. Allow the mouse to set and give your hair a once over spritz with hair spray. check out some of Roberts other looks over at coolmenshair.com

Wanna be Bellla? Bella can be as equally easy to dress up as with clothes from your own wardrobe. First of all you’ll need a pair of skinny jeans (brown corduroy or otherwise), a zip up jacket hoodie and a non descript t-shirt or tank-top. Bella isn’t as pale as Edward so go light, not white. Keep your hair straight at the top, but wavy at the bottom. A thin brown headband is optional, but don’t forget to bring along a tube of chap stick as the most crucial part of this costume is a bitten bottom lip (thanks KStew).

Watchmen’s Rorschach

Maybe you’d want to go as the anti-hero from Watchmen, Rorschach. All you’ll need is a couple pieces of clothing and the the mask.

The hardest thing about this costume will be getting the mask right. It has this special inkblot-looking design to it, and is pretty much the main focus of this costume (everything else is pretty standard clothing.) You can order the mask online from a hobby store or from eBay (although they probably won’t ship in time for Halloween…) or try to do it yourself (all it takes is patience.)

For this costume, you will need:

• A small-brimmed brown fedora hat
• Brown overcoat/trench coat
• Purple pinstriped pants
• Purple ribbon (band) for hat
• Brown or black loafer shoes
• Purple joker gloves or brown leather gloves, but purple is more suitable
• White, beige, or lemon color scarf (no fringe)
• Watchmen Rorschach costume mask (This can be made by using white thin fabric, cheesecloth, or bed sheet material along with a black marker.)

Putting it together can be a pretty daunting task, and since I’m no expert on this particular costume, I suggest that if you run into problems, just Google it. I found this particularly helpful forum thread on WatchmenComicMovie.com that gives you some tips for your costume.

Zombieland’s Tallahassee + other Zombie costumes

Zombie costumes are a staple of this holiday. It’s one of the classic “easy costumes”, just like putting a sheet over your head and calling yourself a ghost. But if done right, being a zombie or zombie killer can be damn frightening!

You’ll want as much fake blood and make-up you can get your hands on! When doing scars for your costume, remember to put the scars on first, and then apply the make-up. Doing this will blend the scars with your face and body parts.

Oh, and don’t be afraid to rip up some of that old clothing. =D

If you want to be on the other side of things, and be a zombie hunter, then that’s doable as well! Here’s what you’ll need to dress up as Tallahassee, the ultimate zombie-killer from the movie Zombieland:

• The hat. This is the most important part of the costume. Any similar-looking hat will do, but if you want the real deal, check out Real Deal Brazil’s Recycled Tarp Hats (which is what Woody Harrelson actually used in the movie.)
• The shades. You can get the shades at pretty much any drugstore sunglasses tree.
• The necklaces. Wood beads, chains, metal or fake-bone pendants. Any kind of dollar store or cheap jewelery story should be good for this.
• Leathers. If you really need to, you could probably pull this off with a jean jacket, but if you wanna go more authentic looking, look for heavy leather (but look for jackets with not too much sheen, and more motorcycle-style than bomber.)
• V-neck T. Maroon is what you should aim for, but any dark V-neck T should do.
• Belt. Something with a big metal buckle.
• Jeans. Keep these simple: no designer holes, etc. Just simple Levi’s work best. To add some more feel, rub your hands in charcoal and then rub them on your jeans.
• Weapon. Get some kind of holster, or, if that’s not doable, just walk around with some kind of toy gun.
• Boots. Cowboy, not biker, style.
• Additional fun props: Jack Daniels bottle, box of Hostess Twinkies, banjo, long-handled pruning shears.

Kids movies are no longer just for kids, or so it seems. This year a trio of ‘kid’s’ movies have all carried heavy themes that are dark by adult standards even. There was the deathly ominous “Up” this summer, and the abandonment of “Where the Wild Things Are” just last week. This past weekend “Astro Boy” blasted into theaters with light children’s fun, on top of some pretty weighty topics.

Widget (voiced by Madeline Carroll), Cora (voiced by Kristen Bell), Zane (voiced by Moises Arias), Sludge (voiced by Sterling Beaumon), Astro Boy (voiced by Freddie Highmore), Trashcan and ZOG (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) take a break after a long day’s work in Summit Entertainment and Imagi Studios’ new animated feature, ASTRO BOY.

“Astro Boy” is much like “Pinocchio” with a man who builds a robot replica of his dead son, Toby, to replace him. (Check the ethics of cloning, defying God, and coping with death off of the dark themes list) The robot has all the memories and look of Toby, but he still isn’t exactly the same, so he throws him away per se. (Fill in abandonment on your Bingo cards) Astro adventures away from his home of Metro City and visits the surface. (Metro City floats in the sky) While there he meets a ragtag troop of kids, very similar to the Lost Boys in “Peter Pan.” The funniest characters also make their appearance, the RRF (Robot Revolution Front – 3 members strong). Astro deals with various things on the surface (reanimation, being enslaved, and one of the movies villains) until he returns to Metro City to fight a boss battle with the “Peacekeeper.”

Where to begin deconstructing? Astro (or Toby) is a nice character that really never undergoes drastic character change. He always is nice to people, as a boy and a robot. He does accept his role in society by the end, but that’s implied in the trailer and in the premise of a boy robot with super powers. The voice talent works here for me. As a child full of awe and wonder for the world, he has the perfect high-pitched voice to fit.

Now his father, voiced by Nicolas Cage, is a different deconstruction. I don’t ever side with how he feels. He is fickle toward what he wants for a son each scene. He abandons Astro to a harsh world, only to suddenly want him back in the middle of a later scene? Then the character Ham Egg becomes a father figure for Astro while on the surface, but he turns against Astro without a moment’s notice going against everything he had been saying through previous scenes. I thought this was a kid’s movie? I guess not with these types of adults, harkening to some of the darker characters in old Disney films.

I mentioned how Astro had some good voice talent, thanks to Freddie Highmore. Even supporting characters have good voicing, including Kristen Bell, Charlize Theron, Bill Nighy, Nathan Lane, and Donald Sutherland, but one character irks me. Nicolas Cage (Toby/Astro’s father) is truly forgettable, and ruins every scene he’s in. His voice never strikes a resonant chord, and he simply is bad at voicing anyway. I will cut him slack because he has done a few brilliant roles in his life, none of which are animated. If those aren’t enough big names, I’ll just throw in Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy for good measure.

The animation of the film is interesting. I can’t say it always worked for me, but there were times that I was pondering how far computer animation has come since “Toy Story.” “Astro Boy” is very cartoonish in style. The characters have exaggerated features, and plastic looking skin. Their clothing also helps enforce certain campiness. The environment often looks much better than the characters set in it. Some of the camera movements helped to bring everything more to life, but all in all, the style never reaches revolutionary heights.

“Astro Boy” remains subpar and fits into the forgettable category of kiddie films. It’s too bad that these dark themes couldn’t be buried into the story deeper, making way for a better developed story arc to bring the characters too life. Pass up on it, unless you want to take your kid’s to a film this weekend, because those options are pretty thin.

When their disgruntled manager tells them that they are getting “long in the tooth”, he doesn’t know that his words are truly prophetic. During a road trip, their humdrum image radically changes when Jennifer, the bass player, disappears one night with a hip vampire. She emerges with a sexually charged charisma that drives the audiences wild.

As the band members succumb, one by one, to blood lust, their “gimmick” launches them into the limelight. In the interview with Anthony he talks about the plot of the upcoming film, working with a star studded cast including Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Malcolm McDowell, Dave Foley, Henry Rollins and Moby and how he was cast in the role of Tyler.

“…I didn’t know how to play guitar before the film, and the only thing holding Rob back from casting me, was that he wanted an actual guitar player” said Anthony “it was important for me to learn guitar, I was just a little freaked out I wouldn’t be able to do it …”

For all you sci-fi fans out there Lionsgate Home Entertainmen released Stargate: 15th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray October 27th, 2009! This release features a new 1080p encode, along with a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Additionally, it will offer both the theatrical and the extended cuts of the movie, and four hours of extras, including three new featurettes, a trivia track, and a gag reel.

The Stargate

Going back there are scores of great, and forgettable, horror films to put you in the holiday spirit. Before you go out this Halloween, ready yourself, for if you happen to find yourself stuck in a horror film, there are ways to survive. It is a longshot, but these helpful tips will help you avoid being the cliché first act death.

10) Don’t be a jerk. Countless on screen deaths are characters that are plain rude and hated. All films have the character that every character and audience member hates, so be genial and don’t get on anyone’s bad side, because you never know if they are the killer. “Saw” films fit this category best.

9) Avoid Stereotypes. Going along with the jerk model, avoid being a stereotype as well. Usually the ditsy blond, any airhead jock, cheerleader or beauty queens are the targets eliminated throughout the film.  See “I Know What you Did Last Summer.”

8) Get Outta High School. High school pretty much is torture, so get out of high school as fast as possible. Not just the building as in  “Scream” but also through the adolescent years. Most popular teen horrors aim here and many classics play to the demographic. “Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Scream”  or even flaky things like “Prom Night.”

7) Don’t Split Up. Your strength is in numbers. Don’t split up and go searching places alone when you know there is a killer.  This cliché is always used to kill off several characters in any slasher. “Friday the 13th” series style.

6) Don’t lose your virginity. It happens someday, but don’t pick a time when serial killers are on the loose, or when it’s the weeks near Halloween. Notable kills here include the opening to “Nightmare on Elm Street.”

5) Stay Away from Empty. Don’t go through scary empty places searching for help. Time and time again dark dank sheds, gas stations, barns, and warehouses are lairs for villains. Pick a horror and it probably is in it.

4) Double Kill. No don’t go on a Halo murdering spree, but kill the villain twice to make sure they are dead. I kind of am stealing this from “Zombieland,” but that shows how brilliant that film has the formula down. Also see “Scream” for rule enforcement.

3) Run. Everywhere. Train to be a cross-country star. “Zombieland” cashed in on the rule, so start up that treadmill. You never know when it will be the apocalypse. The only exception here would be if you find yourself at a lake resort, and Jason attacks. If you run, you’re dead anyway, because he can just walk to catch you.

2) Take action and kill back. Most of the time the girl just screams or watches her killer come at her. Why not fight back? Courts will back you up with a self-defense ruling, so go ahead and murder the killer if they are coming at you with some weapon of choice.  Only problem may be if you fight a ghost, a zombie that never dies, or even Freddy Krueger who exists in dreams. See “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” here because anyone can hear a chainsaw coming at you.

1) Turn the lights on. It must take a genius to figure out that if you leave the lights on, killers don’t come after you because then you can see them. Invest in flood lights, lots of lamps, and maybe some police flashlights. If there is a daytime murder, it probably is found in a drama, and not a horror. Nickelodeon had it right by calling a show “Are you Afraid of the Dark” (which still haunts me to this day) I’m going to stretch this one out a little and say watch “Alien” and that should teach you to use lights.

Dressing up as Jennifer from Jennifer’s Body should be an easy enough costume to pull off with either clothes from your own closet, or one’s picked up from a second hand store. First of all, regardless of outfits, the way to successfully pull off Jennifer is to get the hair and makeup right, if you’ve got the long wavy brown hair and sultry eye and lip make-up working for you, you’re already half done! In keeping with Megan Fox’s style, you’ll need something small and revealing to wear. Luckily there are a few options: cheerleader, schoolgirl or if you’re feeling a little post-kill Jennifer, the bloody white prom dress.

This Is Its’ Michael Jackson

Neverland Ranch. Bubbles the Chimp. Giraffes. Las Vegas spending sprees. When you think about dressing up as Michael Jackson, the words cheap and easy do not come to mind. Remember: keep it simple. First off, a white or silver glove is key; don’t skimp on the sequins either. Next, you’ll need black pants that are too short for your legs, a matching jacket, a plain white shirt, white socks, black shoes, a black fedora and boom, you’re set clothing wise! Lighten your skin, throw on some aviators and learn some moves to sweeten the outfit.

The Fox from Antichrist

So far, everything’s listed has been in the mainstream. Want to get a jump on the next big pop culture icon? Look no further than the talking fox from Danish film director Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist. I realize that dressing-up as the fox from Antichrist is neither cheap, nor easy. But as long as you’re shouting out ‘Chaos Reigns’ that’s all that matters. Get yourself a pair of fox ears and a tail and you’re good to go! The mere mention of this film will be sure to polarize some guests at your party, so feel free to lie and say you’re the suave, Clooney-voiced Fantastic Mr. Fox instead.

According to my spiffy Hotel For Dogs calendar, this year is almost over. Now it would be the professional thing to wait the final months until unveiling this list, but I say nay! October is the time for horror so I apologize if the scariest movie comes out in these remaining weeks, but here are my Top Ten Horror Films of the Decade

#10 – Caché

This is more of an unconventional choice and that’s why I decided to place it so low. It’s not really a horror film, but it’s an unsettling movie with a few powerful scares. Georges is a talk show host who keeps receiving videotapes on his doorstep. The tapes show surveillance of him and his family. The director, Michael Haneke, is not interested in giving you a lot of answers, but he does keep you on edge for the duration of the film.

#9 – Saw

Remember when there was only one? Saw broken into the horror scene and shook it up. Now a couple torture-porn movies come out a year, but Saw was unique. Yes, the themes in the movie are rather stupid and the acting is all over the place (Not in the good directions), but this is still a fun, gruesome ride. Also Michael Emerson is in it so you know it’s worth the #9 spot on that alone.

#8 – The Ring

Once again, just ignore the sequel. Saw started the torture-porn movement and The Ring gave us a million Japanese remakes. So why in the world would I be rewarding these? Despite all the havoc they inadvertently gave to the multiplex, the initial entries were still great. Naomi Watts and Gore Verbinski bring a lot of credibility to what could have been just another horror movie. The conclusion to the madness isn’t very satisfying, but we’re still left with a large handful of really creepy images and a very cheap way to prank your friends. “Seven days.”

#7 – Signs

Yes! I like Signs! A lot! I’m not sure when the backlash began for Signs, but it hasn’t stopped for many years. In reality, this is M. Night Shyamalan’s best and most mature movie. The suspense is top-notched and earned. Its messages about religion and faith are handled well especially when you have Mel Gibson performing the monologues. Yes! I like Mel Gibson! Despite his crazy drunk bigoted ramblings, he’s still one hell of an actor. Why do I have to justify myself to you? Next movie!

#6 – The Descent

When The Descent is really good, it’s crazy good. When it’s just okay, I can’t frankly remember most of those scenes. The Descent is about a group of girls who decide to go spelunking and low and behold a lot of things go wrong. It takes longer than it should for things to go wrong, but once it does it becomes masterful. The film treats its audience with intelligence by never explaining things, but giving you enough clues to let you form your own conclusions. Also make sure you watch the original ending, not the lame American one.

#5 – Paranormal Activity

You can see my full review for Paranormal Activity on this site so I’ll just give you the shortened version. This is definitely an imperfect movie, but that won’t stop me from recommending it to people. The movie is very clever with how it uses its low budget and really shines thanks to the realistic performances by its leads. Don’t let yourself be spoiled from others about any of its scares; they’re rather cool. Yet some advice if you’re in a similar situation as this couple: Try locking the bedroom door? Couldn’t hurt.

#4 – The Orphanage

The best horror movies aren’t about how scary the monster looks, but how unnerving the sounds are when it’s coming towards you. The Orphanage is a master class for atmosphere. It’s about a woman who is reopening the orphanage where she grew up. Soon after she arrives, her son befriends someone who his mother can’t see. Lead by a tour-de-force performance by Belén Rueda, this movie will creep you out. Also I have complained about a few of the endings thus far on the list, but I guarantee you this one is fantastic.

#3 – Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Remember Scream? Remember how awesome and groundbreaking it was in deconstructing the genre? This is even better. I found this film basically by accident, but I’m thrilled that I did. Behind the Mask is a mockumentary following a man named Leslie Vernon who wants to be the next Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers. He shows the documentary crew all the steps it takes to be a successful serial killer. This almost validates all of the silly Friday the 13^th and whatnot movies because it gives the illusion of all the work each of these serial killers. This movie also stars Robert England in the reverse role as the “Ahab.”

#2 – REC

Like all good foreign horror movies, this one has already been remade. Ignore Quarantine (but it looks like most of you already had) because REC is a very tight and suspenseful thriller. Like Paranormal Activity, REC is made up entirely of raw footage from a film camera. Yet this scenario is a little more plausible than most to why the characters are constantly filming everything. It is about a local TV news team who is filming a regular segment called “While You’re Sleeping.” They are following the firefighters when they get a mysterious call to an apartment complex. Once they arrive, things go nuts and everyone inside has become quarantined. It’s a shorter film, but there is not a wasted second.

#1 – Let the Right One In

I adore this movie. So much. People often forget there were TWO vampire romance movies that came out last year. This one just happened to be Swedish and involving twelve year olds. Also this one has actual vampires, not ones doused in glitter. Let the Right One is the very eerie tale of a young girl vampire who moves into town and is hungry. She isn’t a monster, but because of what she is, she has to be monstrous. The movie brings up some complex themes of dedication and existence while juxtaposing them with beautifully haunting images. See this as soon as you can before the American remake comes out next year.

Interviewer Kevin Frazier asks what is (apparently to someone) “the big question” ergo: “Is there an A-Team love story?”

Huh? Collider seems to agree with me about the lightweight~ness/cheesiness factor of the interview, saying, “there is about 5 seconds worth watching.”

Anyhow, sit through the ads to watch a few seconds of action and a lot of sit-down conversation with Cooper talking about his clothes (Donna Karan in jest) and diet (boiled chicken, brown rice and brocolli) and Jesscia Biel discussing relationships [Jessica explains, "We sort of leave it kind of to the imagination as to where it could go at the end of the film. We give you a little hint about who did who wrong, but I think we both feel that we're right."] Hmmm did i miss something here? Isn’t this an action movie?

As you know by now, … Liam Neeson plays team leader Hannibal, originally played by George Peppard, Sharlto Copley takes on ace pilot Murdock, originated by Dwight Schultz, and Ultimate Fighting Championship star Quinton “Rampage” Jackson tackles Mr. T’s role of B.A. Baracus who says, “Less gold, more muscle,” while sporting Mr. T’s classic Mandinka haircut.

Movie: ‘Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay!‘

Synopsis: The story of a Jewish family living on Long Island, where every Friday night, Shirley Hirsch (Lainie Kazan) invites another “perfect” girl for Shabbat dinner in hopes that her son, Nelson (John Lloyd Young), will marry a nice Jewish girl. Things get interesting however when she finds out that her dreams of a perfect Jewish girl are dashed by a mysterious person Nelson is dating turns out is non-Jewish, and also a boy! It is a romantic, heartwarming and inspirational family comedy featuring a Jewish family as it struggles to come to terms with their son’s coming out. It’s a story of love and of family.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen – A few photos, a terrific poster and a cute trailer. The movie still does not have a US distributor so not a lot is available out there.

What I’d Heard – There has been a good amount of buzz surrounding this movie as its way around the festival circuit.

What I Wanted – Something funny, cute and a new and interesting take on the ‘coming out’ story and how it affects this family.

EXPERIENCE
What Turned Me On – The cast was really terrific! Both the mother (Lainie Kazan) and father (Saul Rubinek) were spot on as the parents and you see the terrific chemistry the two of them shared. The situations and the circumstances, though at times perhaps somewhat exaggerated, were believable and felt true. I could empathize with the parents and the boys as they came to terms of living in a new ‘open’ reality.

What Turned Me Off – The pacing of the movie at times seemed a little rough. Some of the scenes were terrifically paced and edited and did well to further the story of the movie. But there were a few moments when I wasn’t sure why we were watching a particular scene and I felt as if it didn’t quite fit in the overall arc of the story. One such example is when the dad was driven to a gay bar by his wife to experience the ‘gay side’ of life and apparently better understand his now gay son. It felt contrived and I could not understand why the mother did not also join her husband in the bar.

AFTERMATH
I Left Thinking – Some people will certainly enjoy this movie and I hope that the message will resonate with both Jewish audiences and non-Jewish families everywhere. Regardless of whether families are Jewish, Italian, or Greek, the issues they face are all the same and the love they share is something you cannot quantify or measure. This is a snapshot of how two families react to a very real situation and a terrific example of how love and understanding can bring families together.

I Left Saying – I hope this reaches a wide audience. There are so many families that would benefit from the messages in this movie, I just hope it gets the distribution and finds its audience soon!

Expiry Date – This movie will have an expiry date about the time when the next great ‘coming out’ movie comes along, except for the fact that this movie, since it is told from the parent’s perspective and shows their point of view instead of spending time with the boys and their relationship, will live on as a the movie for the parents and grownups.

Last thoughts – Overall I did like the movie and I felt the story captured the situation and emotions of these two families extremely well. I hope this movie is able to find distribution soon in at least the top 25 theatrical markets as I feel the positive message needs to be seen and heard. Sure, some of the acting was uneven and some of the humor felt strained, but the overall result is something worth a trip to the movies!

Twilight’s Edward & Bella

Dressing up as Twilight’s Bella and Edward is possibly one of the easiest and most recognizable costumes to pull off.  Your own wardrobe should suffice, but where you’re going to need to spend your moola is on white face paint and hair products.

First up, to disguise yourself as a successful Edward you’ll need 3 main articles of clothing: grey-blue jeans, navy collard or un-collard shirt and a grey pea coat. Now its time to break out the white face paint and hair gel.  Good luck with this, I suggest you look long and hard at pictures of Robert Pattinson before attempting to reconstruct it on your own head. Don’t be afraid to get into character at parties! Stick to dark corners that are ideal for teenage brooding and when speaking to others, never raise your voice above an evocative whisper.

Hair: Robert Pattinson/ Edward Cullen is known for those tousled up-brushed locks. To create this look, you will need to cover your hair in gel or mousse. Bella can be as equally easy to dress up as with clothes from your own wardrobe. First of all you’ll need a pair of skinny jeans (brown corduroy or otherwise), a zip up jacket hoodie and a non descript t-shirt or tank-top. Bella isn’t as pale as Edward so go light, not white. Keep your hair straight at the top, but wavy at the bottom. A thin brown headband is optional, but don’t forget to bring along a tube of chap stick as the most crucial part of this costume is a bitten bottom lip (thanks KStew).

By now you’ve already heard of Paranormal Activity. Typically this is the type of smaller film that I would latch onto, talk about like crazy, and then everyone would continue to ignore it. Yet the fates of cinema worked with me this time. I don’t know how the word of mouth avalanched to the point that this $11,000 film is now available nationwide.

So here’s the big question: Is this Little Engine That Could worth the ride? In short, yes. The longer version, the rest of this review. Paranormal Activity is the story of a twenty something couple who have been experiencing some peculiar things around their house. Micah decides the best idea is to record this activity on an expensive film camera that he buys. That’s where the movie begins. The entire film, much like Cloverfield, is made up of Micah’s footage. Yet unlike Cloverfield, you can actually see where Micah plugs in the battery. Having the camera in the house only angers (or perhaps amuses) the entity that is tormenting the couple.

Now the torment is what everyone is talking about with this movie. At night Micah sets up the camera and points it towards their bed. Then during the early hours, something happens. It has often been observed that with restraint, true creativity reigns. Would certain Hitchcock films be as successful if he didn’t always try to fight against the oppressive Hays’ Code? The filmmakers behind this movie didn’t have a censorship issue, but a budget one. Too many horror films rely on special effects to heighten their scares, but this movie reminds us what is really scary is what we can’t see. Every “scary scene” is a showcase for clever filmmaking tricks. I know roughly how Peter Jackson created Gollum, but I can’t figure out how this film made….sorry, I can’t say. This film is only becoming more popular and I’m sure some of the biggest scares will be spoiled. I don’t want to be that guy.

So why do these scenes work? No one is taking pity on the film by saying that “it is scary for its budget.” It is scary in spite of its budget. The intimacy of this movie is outstanding. Having the camera so close to the action is one thing, but what really makes the film frightening is that they properly set up the environment. This movie has been unfairly compared to The Blair Witch Project. Paranormal Activity succeeds every time Project failed. Blair Witch is boring because you can’t stand being lost in the woods with those numskulls, whereas I enjoyed my time with Micah and Katie. They feel like two very real people. They each have naturalistic flaws and they always properly respond to the madness that they are faced with. I give a lot of that credit to the real Micah and Katie. Working with amateur actors is always a risk, but their performances feel so raw that it’s almost impossible to pinpoint when they are “acting.”

Now this movie is far from perfect. The exposition is handled rather poorly, too many of the sequences during the day aren’t needed, and there is a bit of a pacing problem throughout the film. None of these put a real damper on the film because what shines through is its clever approach on a genre that is at its best when there is fresh talent like these guys.

Movie: Home

Director: Yann-Arthus Bertrand

The first stunning images of Yann-Arthus Bertrand’s newest film, Home, are of a landscape continuously shaped by the volcanoes that dominate it. This is a world appearing free from human influence remaining a ‘living record that offers us a glimpse of what Earth was like at its birth’ suggests the narrator. Better known for his aerial still photography, notably the book and traveling exhibit Earth From Above, Yann-Arthus Bertrand offers Home as spectacular view of the world consistent with a body of work that spans every continent and too many countries to count. It is also an unapologetic and somewhat dour look at the precarious imbalance between human industry and the natural world.
I first encountered Bretrand’s work late in 2003, at an outdoor exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, I was transfixed by beautiful and magnetic photos of our world in transition and the inherent conflict between traditional and modern life which the photographer captured with such skill. During breaks in my own photo shoots in the wealthy London neighborhood I returned several times to study and examine this portrait of our changing world. Free from the overt alarm present in Home, Bertrand’s photos served as an elegant and subtle eye opener for many for whom climate change and international social concerns remained nebulous issues.

Throughout Home we are presented with statistics, facts and warnings of environmental failure. The price of every beautiful and striking image is a set of statistics warning the audience that for the lack of immediate action we are headed for catastrophe. We are presented with images of Alberta’s oils sands, Borneo’s oil palm plantations and acts of deforestation from around the world. Suddenly we have a bird’s eye view of some of the poorest communities on the planet and the cruel irony of resource-rich yet poverty-stricken nations on either edge of social collapse. Bertrand seems to lack focus, he skirts so many issues, resource exploitation, poverty, hunger and climate change, it is as if he has suddenly become aware of these issues and is faced with a powerful need to share with his audience what he alone seems to understand.

Filmmakers, activists and social critics are failing to recognize that audiences with unprecedented access to media and source material are savvier and better informed now than ever before. This failure of recognition dilutes and diminishes messages that we’ve heard before and kills messages that lack impact. Bertrand has been an eyewitness to climate change and humanitarian issues for decades and yet the narration of Home sounds like someone sharing a recently arrived at truth. Home lacks the subtlety, grace and the impact of Bertrand’s earlier work. The irony of Home is that Bertrand is a voice we should listen to and we should pay attention to, as few have seen the world as he has.

Released earlier this year on-line and for free to coincide with Earth Day, Home has been appearing at film festivals around the world, as well as on the shelf of my local video store. Hours after attending the Vancouver International Film Festival presentation I came across the DVD and was compelled to rent it, to see if I had missed something from that afternoon’s screening. I was surprised for two reasons, unlike the theatrical version I had just seen, actor Glenn Close had been tapped to narrate. Close brought a warmth that was missing in the version I had seen in the theatre, she spoke to the audience in a tone that suggested concerned matriarch instead of what felt like the narration of an elementary school science film, cold and poorly edited. The other surprise, perhaps trivial, was the failure to catch a copy-editing error in the narration that stated the Grand Canyon was in Colorado rather than Northern Arizona. I am aware that this may be nit picky, but given the weight of facts and statistics in this film, one has to wonder if there was anything that was missed or otherwise misrepresented.

Visually stunning, Home reaches in grand fashion to show us how ‘linkage is the engine of life’ on earth from the earliest geologic artifacts of our planet to the wildly destructive impact modern human industry has had on the natural world. Bertrand shows us, through his photography, these linkages and changes against a haunting and beautiful soundtrack and an unfortunately distracting narrator. Ninety minutes in, the stick with which the audience has been beaten with is replaced with bunches and bunches of carrots. “It is too late to be pessimistic,” reads the narrator before we are told that hope for us, and our home, yet exists. We feel treated when finally we hear that positive change is taking place around the world, that committed countries are turning to conservation, education and innovation in leading the rest of the world in stemming the tide of climate change.

Unfortunately even the gorgeous photography of Bertrand has difficulty standing on it’s own under the weight of a largely dour and prophetic sermon on the inevitable collapse of our livable environment. While I love and admire the work of Bertrand, I wonder if the message of Home would have been stronger if it was more like 1992’s visual stunner Baraka and less like Al Gore’s two-hour monologue in An Inconvenient Truth. Bretrand’s expertise is in showing the audience and in Home he has turned to a narrator to tell us instead. The message may be true, timely and necessary but as a filmmaker he has failed to introduce something new to the discourse, he has failed to capture our attention and imagination. Much of the narration of Home is obvious and largely redundant for those in the audience who have been paying attention to climate change over the past decade, and for those who haven’t, I suspect that Bertrand will fail to make converts.

Stewart Shoots with Busted Ankle

Kristen Stewart is loved and loathed by many of the young ladies seeking Edward or Jacob to themselves but is managing to find some interesting projects beyond Twilight.

At 19, she’s already acted alongside Jodie Foster, Robert De Niro and many other veteran actors. If you haven’t seen ‘Into the Wild’ go get it immediately - Adventureland is floating around and she’s playing rocker Joan Jett in ‘The Runaways.’

I made a quick moment for Twitter minutes before the Vancouver International Film Festival screening of Ondi Timoner’s award winning documentary of lesser-known internet pioneer Josh Harris;

#VIFF #WeLiveInPublic.

21 quick characters shared with those who follow my Twitter and FaceBook feeds to let them know where I was at that moment, regardless of their interest. The telltale reflection of smartphone screens on other faces in the audience suggested I wasn’t the only one taking a moment to broadcast with others what we were up to.

Described as ‘the greatest internet pioneer you’ve never heard of’, Josh Harris’ path through the 90’s, from .com millionaire to web-casting visionary to financial refugee, hiding in Ethiopia from US creditors, is painted across Ondi Timoner’s film with great candor and remarkable fairness for Harris, who left a wake of alienated and estranged relationships when he left the map at the end of his fall.

Though the curious madness of Harris owns the spotlight of ‘We Live In Public’, the film charts the rise and fall of the wild financial speculation that surrounded the internet in the 1990’s and serves as a portrait of this era. Harris, like so many others experienced an Icarus-like fall after meteoric growth. Though he remains an obscure figure among many better-known names from that era, Harris’ experience is unique owning to his wild curiosity for human relationships caught on camera and a tremendous archive of footage from projects Pseudo.com, Quiet and ‘We Live Public‘ from which Timoner found the name for her film.

With intimate and long term access Timoner draws on footage culled from Harris’ personal archive and almost a decade of her own footage for her 90 minute exploration of the early days of user-generated content years before FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube started to broadcast our lives via broad band connections. Timoner presents for her audience a vision of Harris as a social pioneer and an early adopter of technology driven by creativity and vanity desperate for personal validation through virtual relationships.

Running from the financial success of Jupiter Communications with a net worth of nearly 80 million dollars, Harris went on to launch Pseudo.com in 1993, a webcasting network and competitor to traditional TV. Offering streaming programming on any variety of subjects, Harris attracted presenters cast from the guest lists of his notorious parties which enjoyed a reputation for bringing together nearly naked supermodels and Doom-playing computer nerds and everyone in between.

With a reputation for providing carte blanche for presenters Harris created a creative environment often compared to Andy Warhol’s Factory. Pushed to the technological limits of dial up internet access, Timorer portrays Harris as growing bored and frustrated with the limitations that hampered the continued growth of Pseudo.com. Increasingly restless, Harris’ bizarre behavior and appearances as Luvvy the Clown served as an impetus for his next project and his departure from Pseudo.com. Quiet would bring together more than one hundred participants under the supervision of hundreds of video cameras for a thirty day experiment ending prophetically with the arrival of the New York City Police on New Year’s Day 2000.

Quiet emerged from the depths of a Soho basement a combination of the Stanford Experiment, Survivor, Big Brother and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. With her own camera rolling, Quiet participant Ondi Timoner captured what would become among the most compelling chapters of her film ‘We Live in Public‘. Quiet would go on to cost Harris millions of dollars, descend in to social chaos and end with the controversy of police involvement.

On the heels of Quiet, Harris and his new found girlfriend, former Pseudo presenter and Quiet participant Tanya Corrin turned the cameras on themselves in a New York loft wired for 24 hour broadcast. Unlike Quiet, there was no creation of a community, only the slow and painful to watch collapse of their relationship played out for a dwindling number of viewers. Corrin leaves and Harris’ search for validation through this latest project comes to an end on the toilet with a phone call from a banker to tell him he was broke, having lost all that he had left following the burst of the .com bubble.

In the mid 90’s Harris emerged from the .com crowd with a vision for the future of not only the internet and what it would be capable of, but also of human interaction and what it would become. He envisioned then what would be commonplace a decade later, but unfortunately he lacked the technology that was years away and the discipline to find a lasting foothold after the collapse of the Nasdaq in 2000. Without the language to describe it, Harris laid the ground work for the network of social media that has become so a part of our daily lives.

With ‘We Live in Public‘, Director Ondi Timoner succeeds in being provocative without being a provocateur like so many of her documentary contemporaries, a role she rightly preserves for her subject, Josh Harris, self professed to be one of the “first great artists of the 21st century. Armed with the conviction that everyone’s window for fame would grow from 15 minutes to 15 minutes a day Harris was driven by creativity, vanity and his search for validation, and perhaps his experience, writ large should be the watchword for our individual experiences writ small. Timoner brings her film to a close with warnings about how FaceBook, MySpace and Twitter have created public forums for our private lives.

Unrivaled – Fight Choreography Featurette While filming a fight scene, director Warren P. Sonoda and Stunt Coordinator Eric Bryson talk about what goes into capturing a good fight on film.

Records plays Max, an innocent boy who throws tantrums in a bratty, boisterous manor. He acts exactly as a child should though, beginning the film playing in the snow, throwing snowballs, and building an igloo. He ends up getting hurt and crying like a child should, but in return we see the wrath of Max and the love of his mother. Later Max plays out the scene from the book step for step by throwing a tantrum at the kitchen table and gets sent to bed. Flash forward and we see Max traveling to his own world toward the wild things. Max interacts and has an uneven time with the creatures. We see love, hate, jealousy, and a variety of emotions as they spend their time together. Eventually though Max has to return home, just as all things end.

What backstory there is in the film is great. Director Spike Jonze really has expanded the short children’s book very well. You see a well-established relationship between Max and his family and the pain of abandonment the Max feels. The wild things build on Max’s character even further, as they are versions of his persona and psyche, giving you a look at what Max feels about himself and his position in the world around him. I even like the changes Jonze made into how Max travels to the island.

Jonze also added depth to the wild things-Max relationship, giving it a purpose. The story always seemed to be Max creating his own world with it following his imagination. The film flips that, and you see Max evolving within the world. He faces danger quite frequently as well. I never felt that the danger was justified though. This is a made up world, as the source material is, and I never could get past that element. Max faces cliffs to scale, monsters that crush, and falling trees. I just am a bit of a cynic here because I am attached to the book. Believe me though: Max does face dangers.

The wild things drop jaws. They look incredible, but even that is an understatement. The mix of Jim Henson costumes and CG emoting faces is brilliant, and it brings each of these giant characters to life more than any creature film has to date. I thought King Kong was impressive, but these guys blow him out of the water. They also are more lively and fun than him. The tangible fur, horns, and bodies add a dimension to the film that computer graphics really cannot achieve.

The voice talent among the creatures is very impressive as well. James Gandolfini plays the main wild thing, Carol, and his voice is perfect for it, with pitch perfect inflections to emote the angst and anger of a tormented creature (mirroring Max’s behavior from earlier). Also voicing in this are Chris Cooper, (trainer in “Seabiscuit,” also in “Bourne Identity”) Paul Dano, (“Little Miss Sunshine” & “There Will Be Blood”) Forest Whitaker, (“Last King of Scotland”) and Catherine O’Hara. (mom in “Home Alone”)

The writing for the film is outstanding. The dialogue for Max feels like a child’s real speech. I was drawn right into the writing in the opening scenes, when Max tells his mom a story. He rambles on using “then” every sentence, just as a youngster would normally do. That story itself also has ridiculous elements put together, that it seems like a child imagined it on the spot.

This is not a kids movie. Max is spoiled, the monsters are meant to be scary, and the themes get pretty intense. The topics of abandonment and anti-social behavior are not light by any means. Max simply wants attention from anyone, not necessarily a big show of it though. His outburst simply is the culmination of the degraded relationship between himself and his sister. As Max wraps up his time in his land, we see intense images of the destructive nature of the wild things that may scare some youngsters.

It is handheld shaky camera for the entire film, but that is to illustrate the energy of its subject. I highly recommend “Where the Wild Things Are” for the great story telling, style, and return to the nostalgia of childhood.

Grade: B+/A- (3 out of 4)

Synopsis: “Edge of Darkness” is an emotionally charged thriller set at the intersection of politics and big business. Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson) is a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father. When his only child, twenty-four year-old Emma (Bojana Novakovic), is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target. But he soon suspects otherwise, and embarks on a mission to find out about his daughter’s secret life and her killing. His investigation leads him into a dangerous, looking glass world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder – and to shadowy government operative Darius Jedburgh (Ray Winstone), who has been sent in to clean up the evidence. Craven’s solitary search for answers about his daughter’s death transforms into an odyssey of emotional discovery and redemption. - In Theaters January 29th, 2010.

This erstwhile reporter is a big fan (+ 2X attendee & 1X presenter) of SXSW, the (almost legendary) music/film/interactive festival in Austin, Texas (though the locals will tell you “Austin ain’t Texas”).

I noticed the deadline is approaching for the film submission so i’ve compiled a few resources to help you figure out if this is the best place for your film - I’ve attended a few fests (including Sundance from 1991-3) but nothing is quite like SXSW if you are a fan of all sorts of arts, people and parties. You are guaranteed to get your mind blown one way or another ;-).

Get the SXSW Lowdown

First up, get to know SXSW’s Youtube channel with presentations, panels, concerts and miscellania (like Johnny Cash’s keynote song/speech from 1994) Also there are a playlist of information about the fest - watch this so you don’t hafta take my word about the hi-jinks and the mayhem.

Of yeah, you’d better follow SXSW’s Twitter Account and Alltop has a SXSW aggregation page which is pretty handy. There are also un-official SXSW Twitter fan accounts like SXSWi and stellar web resources like SXSWBaby & SXSW Insider’s Guide.

Submit your Film

Next for you filmmakers, submit your film to SXSW after reading this blurb to know you chances and the rules.

Film Memories and Predictions

Last year, the film which stuck with me was ‘RiP - The Remix Manifesto‘ with Q&A following by Brett Gaylor and uber-lawyer Lawrence Lessig and I also was charmed by Col Needman, founder of IMDB’s casual conversation/presentation.

The previous year, seeing ‘Gonzo - The story of Hunter S. Thompson’ at the Alamo Draft House (with a pint of beer and a huge meaty salad) was the jaw-dropper. This year, I am eager to see ‘We Live In Public‘ which just screened at Vancouver International Film Festival. Here’s a bit of background of this experimental film about a much wilder experiment gone oddly wrong.

Ondi Timoner’s We Live in Public is the story of “the greatest Internet pioneer you’ve never heard of”, Josh Harris, and was a successful Special Screening at SXSW 2009, subsequently touring festivals around the world. On Friday, October 9th, the award-winning documentary returns to Austin for a run at the Alamo South Lamar. Director Ondi Timoner will be present on opening night for a Q&A.

It’s the story of 1970s African-American action legend Black Dynamite. ‘The Man’ killed his brother, pumped heroin into local orphanages, and flooded the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor. Black Dynamite was the one hero willing to fight ‘The Man’ all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.
