In ‘A Single Man,’ English professor George (Colin Firth) deals with the unexpected loss of his partner. Once dealt the news, George is devastated and becomes increasingly detached from the immaculate, perfect 1960s world around him.

Taking place over a single day, the film follows George tying up all his loose ends while planning his suicide. He makes a visit to an old friend (Julianne Moore), forges a relationship with a one of his students (Nicholas Hoult) and has a brief encounter with a hustler, Carlos (Jon Kortajarena).

When George makes sure will be in order for his departure; he even goes as far as laying out the exact suit and tie he wished to be buried in. He’s meticulous, much like the famed fashion designer and first time director Tom Ford.

Randomly select any frame in the film and you could hang the image on your wall. From the stunning cinematography to the costumes, sets, props, everything has been carefully executed in exacting detail. Not a single “t” was left uncrossed: even Julianne Moore’s pink nail polish matches her cigarettes. It is clear Ford is in complete control, even going as far as ratcheting up the intensity of color in emotionally charged scenes.

A Single Man walks an interesting line by placing a suicidal character in world that could easily be found on the pages of Vanity Fair. There’s a line of dialogue in the film that perfectly sums up everything: “Sometimes awful things have their own kind of beauty.”

Two great actors. Looking forward to seeing how it. The 60’s backdrop should be fun visually too.
