It comes as no surprise Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince set its first record within its first minute of release. Screening nationwide today, last night at 12:01 the sixth Potter movie raked in $22.2 million in midnight sales at 3,300 locations.

That means the $250-million movie knocked last year’s Batman flick,  The Dark Knight, out of first place by almost $4-million.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
With The Half-Blood Prince screening worldwide throughout the week and advance ticket sales shattering records of their own, there’s a very good chance the movie will go on break just about every milestone there is. The ones to watch out for are the Wednesday ticket sales, now held by Transformers 2 with $62 million, as well The Dark Knight’s $203.7 five-day record.

Industry watchers also expect The Half-Blood Prince to push the Harry Potter franchise past the $5-billion mark, earning it yet another record for the highest grossing movie series of all time, currently held by the enduring James Bond.
