Summer 2010: A Look Ahead

As 2009 comes to a close, us moviegoers are finally getting a peek at what’s coming up for the summer of 2010. With Avatar out and Sherlock Holmes only a week away, our appetites for big studio fare need to be quenched. Luckily, we’re finally getting a look at what’s in store for us in the month of May 2010… and it’s kind of familiar.

Iron Man 2

Robert Downey Jr. returns as rockstar CEO/superhero Tony Stark, as do Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and War Machine (Terence Howard Don Cheadle). This time the rockstar CEO/superhero is up against Russian baddies Whiplash (Mickey ‘The Mick’ Rourke) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). If the trailer is any indication, this movie is going to be nothing short of kick-ass.

Robin Hood

Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe try to re-spark that Gladiator magic, trading in Colosseums for castles. If Guy Ritchie is going to re-invent Sherlock Holmes, then why can’t Ridly Scott re-invent Robin Hood? Oscar® winner Russell Crowe plays the expert archer Robin Hood who leads a band of marauders to confront corruption and lead an uprising against the English crown.  In an effort to save the village of Nottingham and win the hand of the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscar® winner Cate Blanchett), this hero rises from humble beginnings to become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

Shrek Forever After

Well, here we go again. In the final installment of the Shrek franchise, Shrek (Mike Myers) has become a domesticated family man. Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, the now-reluctant ogre agrees to autograph pitch forks. Longing for the days when he felt like a “real ogre,” Shrek is tricked into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumplestiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) have never met. Now, it’s up to Shrek to undo all of Rumpelstiltskin’s mischief in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love and family.

My prediction? Overweight cat = instant crowd pleaser.
