Even if you don’t follow Mixed Martial Arts or MMA-themed movies, you’ve seen the big body, crazy hair and menacing face of Kimbo Slice. He’s popped into popular culture as a Mr. T lookalike, contestant on UFC Ultimate Fighter reality show, computer protection commercials and more since surfacing as a street fighter in YouTube videos.
Like many MMA fighters, he’s also breaking into acting. Nothing too serious but with his natural charisma which has captivated fans beyond his record in the ring, he’s bound to keep on punching his way to more roles.
Kimbo Slice recently appeared alongside Michael Jai White in ‘Blood and Bone.’ In this clip … Michael Jai White talks about ‘Blood and Bone’, his character Bone, the plot of the film, and what he thinks makes a good movie interspersed with action clips (after the jump) …
Kimbo Slice in Ultimate Fighter 10
His recent appearences on Ultimate Fighter garnered record rating despite him losing the match – apparently, some experienced fighters are unimpressed by his skills. However, no one can deny his viewer draw including UFC boss Dana White (yup the guy who says fighters should be fighters, not actors), ergo:
White has called him a “joke,” a “bum” and “not a real fighter,” among other less than kind descriptions. He said that Slice would “get murdered if he fought in the UFC” and suggested that his lightweight champion, 155-pound B.J. Penn, would “annihilate” the 230-pound Slice.
The UFC president has repeatedly insisted he would not allow Slice to compete in the UFC unless he won his way onto the show by competing on “The Ultimate Fighter.”
In MMA: Kimbo Slice-Roy Nelson draws record ratings for The Ultimate Fighter, White says:
“It’s hard to say why, but some people have it and some don’t, and Kimbo definitely does,” and continues … “I’m blown away. I honestly am blown away. I knew it was going to be big. This is massive.”
The reality show is designed to give aspiring fighters a chance to win a UFC contract but Slice already has one and the show his appearance on the show seems to me to be more designed to test his mettle and hone his skills.
In MMA: Kimbo Slice loses to Roy Nelson, but Ultimate Fighter showdown leaves questions unanswered, Chris Parry in VANCOUVER SUN, describes the fight which pit Slice’s power against the superior wrestling skills his opponent – an apparently out-of-shape – Roy Nelson.
“With coaches Sugar Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson looking on, the fight began tentatively, with Nelson not wanting to get within Slice’s power-punching range, and Slice not wanting to dart in close for fear of being taken to the ground – where he has a reputation for turning turtle.
But when Slice landed some chunky noggin-knockers (that sounded like an ax chopping wood), Nelson promptly dove in for the big man’s legs and began working for a takedown with everything he could muster.
After a prolonged clinch tie-up at the cage, Nelson took the big man down with 90 seconds to go in the first, and promptly held him down in a crucifix, isolating his arms and using his mammoth bulk to keep the streetfighter prone.
That almost changed when Slice used his toes to walk up the cage and neeeeeearly roll Nelson over, but with that escape falling short, Nelson went back to high school wrestling 101 and held Slice down in a position in which he couldn’t defend the 80 or so love-taps Nelson dropped on his dome.”
