Twilight Saga: Eclipse ~ Filming in Vancouver: Set news round-up

A Total Eclipse in Vancouver

So every Twilight Saga enthusiast knows the third installment ‘Eclipse‘ is shooting in Vancouver and *everyone* in this city seems to have a story about a chance encounter on an actor, throng of paparazzi, or stumbling upon a set in some suburban neighborhood or anonymous warehouse district.

While we’ve been toiling on other less-twinkley projects, we’ve collected a round-up of some great coverage from bloggers with set-access to the local newspapers trying to explain the phenomena to the uninitiated while they await the release of part 2 ‘New Moon.’

Vancouver Girl on Eclipse Set

First off, international woman of style and recreation, Vancity Allie reports with incredible photos with New Eclipse Set: Newborn Vampires Arrive in Forks:

I had a chance to see a new set being filmed for Eclipse… the scene where the newborns arrive in Forks. It’s a picturesque scene, with mountains and water framing the background of the shot, and a sparse unoccupied beach for the newborns to arrive on… then they disappear into the forest. The vampire newborns looked absolutely chilling, and their rugged military-like outfits along with steely, determined glares just added to the mood. Filmed early in the morning, this scene was designed to look as if it had been shot at night, possibly just after dusk or just before dawn.

This intrepid Vancity Allie says: Hope you enjoyed the photos and the video! You can always follow me on Twitter for more updates, or check here to see my other blog posts with Twilight cast members and live set filming.

Her other posts include New Moon / Eclipse Cast Party PhotosFirst Look at the Eclipse Graduation Scene, and Billy Burke! in which she reports:

I got the chance to visit the set of the Graduation Scene in Eclipse today after work. I heard that Rob, Kristen, Ashley, Jackson, Peter and others were on set today filming the scene. Sadly I only got there for the tail end of it

Bloggers see Jackson ~ Jasper Rock

Vancity Allie was one of the local bloggers who attended Jason Rathbone (who plays Jasper in the series) perform with his band with many of the Twilight makers in the house including the mistress of the series Stephenie Meyer – She reports on the music and the attendees in 100 Monkyeys Perform, Twilight’s Eclipse Cast Gets Cozy.

Last night we went to see Jackson Rathbone and his band 100 Monkeys perform at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver. Hastings and Main isn’t the greatest area for young girls to be hanging out in an alley after midnight… but, I digress.

Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer was also there, mingling with the crowd at first unnoticed, and then eventually escaped to the VIP booth once she was discovered, mobbed and flashed… *sigh* I love Stephenie. Getting to talk to her and take pictures with her definitely had Amy and I fangirling last year.

Georgia Straight’s Best Blog in Vancouver winner Miss 604 held a contest to attend the show ergo: Jackson Rathbone of Twilight with 100 Monkeys won by “Sarah.”

Fans and Paparazzi in West Ender

Vancouver arts and entertainment paper “The West Ender” writes about “Twilight Time” to educate the populous that this isn’t just another movie filming in Vancouver.

The global frenzy for photos of even the most minor cast members has ushered in Vancouver’s first truly big wave of L.A.-based paparazzi — photographers who make a living staking out and documenting Twilight’s every turn.

To people familiar with Vancouver’s long-standing reputation as Hollywood North, the obsessive attention from fans and paparazzi may be a boon to the economy, but it’s not entirely flattering. The TwiHards (and another, perhaps more obsessive subset, the TwiMoms) have helped bolster Vancouver’s tourism business by flocking here in droves, just to get a glimpse of anything Twilight-related. Elaine “Lainey” Lui, who pens the blog LaineyGossip.com and interviews celebrities for TV entertainment show eTalk, calls the trend “embarrassing.”

Seeking Eclipse Sets

Nat’s Notes writes about her adventure to find the set (along with a legion of Twi-hards) trekking deep into the burbs to find the set Twilight Saga: Eclipse Set Exploring Video & Pics:

When I say exploring, it is not a stretch. You spend so much time doing research, following leads, forming hypothesis, doubting your hypothesis and wind up scratching your head wondering if you are following the wrong trail. Tonight was no exception.

Although tonight wasn’t as much of an exploration as it was great friends with great information and solid leads. Well, maybe I am selling ourselves short. There was definitely a bit of sleuthing involved. What it came down to was simply having the right information and the web of both locals who know their stuff and twitter with its proliferation of information.

Vancouver Sun Surmise on Eclipse Locations

Vancouver’s major daily paper wrote a bit of a preview this summer before filming started called Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart return fuels speculation about Eclipse location shots in Vancouver:

Eclipse Twifans want to know: Where in and around Vancouver are the stars going to land? What locations will host the vampires’ lusty adventures and his prey’s tremulous urges? Naturally, location managers shy away from revealing to the media, as well as devotees, where they will shoot scenes in public places. In the case of Eclipse locales will be guarded as closely as the Crown Jewels, because once word gets out, those sites will be swarmed with you know who.

Unused Treasures from Twilight

They reference Twilight Treasury’s post: David Slade Is A Tease & I Love It!!!! Eclipse Non-Location Photos! who references director David Salde’s Twitter updates:

As you may or may not know, David Slade (Eclipse Director) has rejoined Twitter, and is posting some seriously interesting tweets! For obvious reasons, he cannot post pictures of the locations that they are actually using, until given permission by Summit, but he has been kind enough to post some pics of the locations they were considering, but that didn’t make it into the final line up -

Screen Daily for the Record

Screen Daily gave an official announcement for the record in August Filming kicks off in Vancouver on third Twilight film Eclipse By Jeremy Kay

Summit Entertainment has begun principal photography in Vancouver on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third entry in the series that is scheduled to open in North America on June 30, 2010.
David Slade is directing from Melissa Rosenberg’s adapted screenplay based on the book by Stephenie Meyer.

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner reprise their lead roles as the character of Bella is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Catalina Sandino Moreno are new additions to the cast, along with Xavier Samuel, Jack Huston, Julia Jones, BooBoo Stewart, and Jodelle Ferland.

The second installment of the film franchise, The Twilight Saga: New Moon directed by Chris Weitz, will be released on November 20 this year.

Pattinson, Efron & Cooper = Chaos

The Vancouver Sun again examines the mobs of fans and paparazzi suddenly descending on this ultra-mellow city in which Robert Pattinson, Zac Efron and Bradley Cooper were all simultaneously toiling on movies in Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner drive Vancouver crazy — Twilight hysteria spills over into Zac attack

Vancouverites used to be indifferent to film stars — then came the Twilhards Fans flock to B. C.’s Twilight movie tour - Hollywood North is on the verge of losing its reputation for cool. - Vancouver has seen stars aplenty since the city graduated into one of North America’s film and television centres. A-listers such as Sean Penn and Robert De Niro are seen walking down the street and dining without bodyguards. Heck, Goldie and Kurt felt so comfortable they bought a house here some years ago.

The Vancouver Sun has hopped aboard the Twi-train and keeping tabs on set Twilight stars on set in Port Moody, B.C. and captured the stars looking very Vancouver in a Volvo wagon and are producing regular coverage geared towards fans:

Tour de Twilight

Twilight Tours operators are getting significant press including ‘Twi-hards’ explore sets in Vancouver By Shelley Fralic in Calgary Herald on Sept. 2 who provides a narrative of the set tour:

We’re in Coquitlam, standing on a rural road in front of a ramshackle homestead, which is where the character Jacob Black, who is a werewolf and also loves Bella, lived with his dad in New Moon. Word is the cast will be back on site in a few weeks shooting for Eclipse, but for now it’s just a little red house and a red barn in a field. More photos, and more excited chatter and then we’re back in the van because, in true cinematic style, Kilpatrick has saved the best for last.

It’s the Bella house, a two-storey white clapboard movie-set home built to match exactly the real Portland house used in the first movie.

It’s perched, Styrofoam chimney and all, on the edge of a forested Surrey park, most of it shrink-wrapped, and all of it behind a high barbed wire fence, alarms and surveillance cameras blinking.

It was used in the New Moon shoot, and Kilpatrick found it after hearing a vague reference to its location on the radio. She did a three-hour, street-by-street grid search until she finally turned a corner and there it was.

Someone has been watering the lawn at the house, and Kilpatrick thinks that means they’re getting ready for Eclipse filming, and she’ll be the first to know, because she brings fans out here most every day.

Use your Forks says NYTimes

Finally, the NYTimes is paying attention to the tourism juggernaut which is Twilight – this time in reference to Forks, a little town near the north-west corner of Washington State which is the spiritual homeland of the stories as detailed in: ‘Twilighters’ Put Small Town in the Spotlight:

Over the last year or so, Forks (population 3,120) has morphed into a mecca for Twilighters, or Twihards as they are sometimes called. Visitors to this rainy town, whose main industries are logging and two correctional facilities, have more than tripled for the first eight months of this year, compared with the same period last year, according to the local Chamber of Commerce. Lodging occupancy is up, and local merchants sell little-vampire pacifiers and Bella and Edward action figures.

“Twilight” groupies also beat a path to Portland, Ore., where the first “Twilight” movie was filmed, and to VancouverBritish Columbia, where “New Moon,” due to be released Nov. 20, was shot and the third movie, based on “Eclipse,” is wrapping up, with a release date of June 30, 2010.

Hoh Rainforest near Port Angeles

Hoh Rainforest near Port Angeles

Port Angeles, Wash., a waterfront town northeast of Forks that is mentioned in the books, is another magnet. Neil Conklin, the owner of Bella Italia, which bills itself as the restaurant where Edward and Bella have their first date, says the place has sold 4,500 $17 bowls of mushroom ravioli this year, which is what Bella orders after Edward rescues her from some local hoods (he, of course, isn’t into solid foods), and the Port Book and News estimates that its business has increased as much as 20 percent, even though Bella never sets foot in the store, saying “it wasn’t what I was looking for.” …

Other local merchants, some of whom at first raised eyebrows at the town’s vampire- and werewolf-besotted visitors, have gamely gotten into the act. Last September, the Dew Drop Inn Motel turned one of its 22 guestrooms into a Bella Suite, with black curtains and crimson tulle wall swags, and says bookings have been strong for the room, which costs $149 instead of the usual rate of $83.

The Pacific Inn Motel decorated a single “Twilight” guestroom last November, painting the walls black and red and putting up movie posters; it now has six of the theme rooms. “They had really cool ‘Twilight’ towels,” said Emma Hand, 14, who stayed in one of the rooms in August with her brother and parents on a cross-country trek from their home in Falls Church, Va.
