Dark Knight director makes his Inception

Christopher Nolan

Director Christopher Nolan has revealed what his next film will be and it’s not a new Batman movie. Nolan, the guy that directed/co-wrote/produced The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, thus washing away that awful Batman and Robin aftertaste, isn’t doing the easy thing and making Bat-film #3. Instead he quietly wrote his own script (so much for the rumor that he was taking time off after the release of Dark Knight) and will direct it for Warner Bros. It’s called Inception and it’s being described as a sci-fi/actioner that’s set in “the architecture of the mind.” Dude, that could make it The Matrix for all I know.

Inception will start filming later this year and WB wants it out and in theaters in the summer of 2010. That’s a pretty intense production and post-production schedule for any science fiction film. Of course I’m assuming that the project would need decent post time to make the film’s special effects, but there’s plenty of cerebral sci-fi movies that don’t need laser beams and hyperspace FX for their stories to work. I’m betting with a talented guy like Nolan this Inception movie is going to be more like the latter kind of sci-fi.

The world’s media is looking at this story in a different way, that being the question as to when the next Batman movie will be made. I’m sure that Warners wouldn’t have any problems if Nolan had wanted to break ground on the next Batman movie the day after Dark Knight opened in theaters. Thankfully, the people running WB are taking it slow and easy. I figure that they want to keep Nolan a happy guy and if that means waiting an extra year or two for the next Batman, well, so be it. They’ve got a ton of other superheroes; all they need is to find talented creative people to develop Wonder Woman or Superman or any of those other capes into decent superhero flicks. That’s the hard part, innit? Finding the next Nolan.
