Ugly Betty star America Ferrera will star in American Tragic, a new drama that will lens next February and be out in theaters in the fall of 2009. Ryan Piers Williams will direct the picture and Ferrera will have an executive producer credit. As well, Ferrera’s production company, Take Fountain Productions, will share in the producting duties along with Maya Entertainment. “Ryan has written a very compelling film that will surely resonate with both Latino and mainstream audiences,” said Jeff Valdez, who co-chairs Maya Entertainment along with Maya founder Moctesuma Esparza.
The movie centers on a young man named James (Ryan O’Nan) who is returning from a tour of duty deflated and without a sense of purpose in his life. Unable to find solace with his loving wife (Ferrera) or from his mother (Melissa Leo), James seeks companionship from an old buddy and together the two set out for a trip across America.
“When our production team along with Heather described the film and told me America was on board it took us all of one day to fast track the film into development and pre-production,” said Jeff Gonzalez, COO and CFO of Maya Entertainment. “This will be the second film of America’s that Maya distributes as we recently distributed How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer.”
