That’s what Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are breaking word of this afternoon. According to the first magazine they heard Mickey is up for the part of a bad guy named Crimson Dynamo, a Russian wearing a heavy duty suit of armor worthy of going head-to-head with Iron Man. Over at the Reporter they’re saying Rourke’s IM2 character is indeed Russian but may be a villain named Whiplash that has mechanical arms, kind of Iron Man’s version of Doctor Octopus.
Reporter also heard that Sam Rockwell, who was so great in Choke and everything else he does, is in talks to play a rival businessman out to do a corporate takedown of Tony Stark.
Both actors are terrific guys to get involved with this new superhero franchise. Rourke is on fire with his performance as a burned out sports star in The Wrestler and he’ll likely receive an Oscar nomination for his role. And as I said above, Rockwell is a great talent and I could totally see him playing a deadly financial equal to Stark’s reckless playboy tycoon. With casting choices like this Iron Man 2 is on the right path.
