Angel Heart getting is remade…just because, alright?

Wednesday, October 01, 2008

Mike Browne, my illustrious co-blogger who works across from me, saw the news today that Hollywood wants to remake Angel Heart for the 21st century. “Why?” said the Brownie, “Why do these things continue to happen, Patrick?” As if I could supply an appropriate answer, but nevertheless I did attempt one:

“Because, Mike Browne, the people remaking Angel Heart are betting that the people that saw the original will go check out the new version just to see if they got it right or if it sucks. Plus there’ll be some kids that will go see it if it’s got Josh Hartnett or Orlando Bloom in it, so there.” Oh, how truly wise I am, aren’t I, if not vain?

But seriously: some people in Hollywood want to remake Angel Heart. The 1987 original starred Mickey Rourke as a private detective hired by a bearded Robert De Niro to go get into trouble and do some risque sex scenes with Lisa Bonet. Then the movie hit you with its twist ending, and if you liked it, you told all your friends how awesome said ending was. I still haven’t seen the movie but I have vivid memories of my best friend at the time raving all about the picture. Such is the circle of life.

The new Angel Heart has three producers including ex-New Line Cinema president of production Michael De Luca. Mike’s a cool guy. I’ve talked with him before and he’s been a fan of my writing, plus he has geek credentials, so if he’s involved I know that his heart is in the right place.

There’s no writing team assigned to pen the draft nor any stars attached to it, but here’s a quick idea: why not consider hiring Rourke to play De Niro’s character in the remake? The dude has the weirdness vibe down pat and he’s gonna only get more buzz thanks to his strong performance in The Wrestler.
