Kari Skogland’s Fifty Dead Men Walking lit up audiences when it ran this past September at the Vancouver and Toronto Film Festivals. The film tells the true story of Martin McGartland (played in the film by Jim Sturgess), then a 22-year-old young man living in Ireland at the height of its civil war. Lay your eyes on 50 Dead Men Walking
Thursday, October 16, 2008
In the 1980s Ireland was caught up in one of the bloodiest and most violent civil wars seen in modern history. One young man, a 22-year-old named Martin McGartland, was recruited from the streets of west Belfast by the Irish Republican Army but soon became disillusioned with the organization’s brutal methods to deliver their message. Martin found a way to bring meaning to his existence by supplying the British police with intelligence about the IRA’s future missions of terror. Lives were saved but in the process McGartland’s own life as well as the lives of his family were placed in extreme jeopardy.
Director Kari Skogland (The Stone Angel) adapted McGartland and co-author Nicholas Davies non-fiction book Fifty Dead Men Walking into a screenplay that she filmed on location in Belfast. Jim Sturgess (21, Across the Universe) plays Martin McGartland in the film while Sir Ben Kingsley plays McGartland’s British police contact. Rose McGowan (Grindhouse) also stars in the film as an IRA operative who plays a dangerous game with McGartland.
MovieSet now has the trailer for this upcoming thriller on our Fifty Dead Men Walking sitelet and you’re invited to check it out. The movie rolls out in U.K. cinemas this month and an North American release date is pending.
