Romero zombie picture for Halloween
Friday, October 31, 2008
Just in time for Halloween, coming to us from USA Today, we get our first look at a zombie (above) from the new and as yet still untitled George A. Romero directed, "Something" of the Dead. The article claims the film is still shooting in Toronto, but according to other sources MovieSet has found out the film wrapped over the past week.
"It’s about tribalism," says Romero about the story that unfolds on a small island a couple of weeks after the original outbreak in 1968’s Night of the Living Dead. "There are two factions. It’s the idea that even when faced with a crisis, tribal concerns about power control people’s motives."
Sounds like lost with zombies.
The recent Diary of the Dead felt rushed and I was disappointed in it. Hopefully this one will be better.

Social upheaval equals more zombie films

Chart by Stephanie Fox of io9
According to io9 the amount of zombie films being produced is directly proportional to the prevalence of war, social and economic unrest.
Here’s a quote from their article:
There’s been a huge spike in the production of zombie movies lately, and many of them seem to be inspired by war. Everything from 28 Days Later to Zombie Strippers make explicit reference to wartime, as did seminal 1968 zombie flick Night of the Living Dead. Is there really a connection between zombie movies and social unrest? We decided to do some research and find out. The result? We’ve got a line graph showing the number of zombie movies coming out in the West each year since 1910 — and there are definite spikes during certain years, which always seem to happen eerily close to historical events involving war or social upheaval. Romero’s new zombie pic finds a cast (and snack food)
Friday, October 03, 2008
The cast for George Romero’s untitled zombie movie has finally been revealed. Variety reports that among those living will be Alan Van Sprang, Kenneth Welsh, Kathleen Munroe, Richard Fitzpatrick, Devon Bostick, Stefano Colacitti and Athena Karkanis. Sounds like the undead will have plenty of food to munch on.
We’ve also learned the premise of the film: after the outbreak of zombies seen in Diary of the Dead, one of the survivors of that movie makes their way to an island off the coast. There the isolated survivors have a natural barrier to protect themselves from the newly risen dead, however, they also have their own zombies popping from out of the island cemetery. The islanders struggle with whether they should permanently kill their resurrected friends and family members or just subdue them in the hopes that a cure can be found. I’m guessing that bad things happen in the third act and there’s no happy ending.
Romero (now an official Canadian citizen!) began shooting his new flick last Sunday. If you missed out on MovieSet’s exclusive about the zombie flick you can still catch up with what we broke.
