Exclusive: When you can see George Romero’s next zombie movie & details on Seventh Moon

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

[This report was filed by Quinn Bender, MovieSet's reporter covering AFM 2008.]

Voltage Pictures has confirmed with MovieSet that George A. Romero’s latest zombie flick is one of director’s biggest — if not the biggest — film to date. International distribution deals are falling nicely into place at the American Film Market this week, but fans of Romero will have to wait until early 2010 to see the zombie flick in theaters. That is, unless they’re lucky enough to secure tickets for its world premier at the Toronto Film Festival in 2009.

The trailer for Deadtime Stories

Monday, November 10, 2008

Our buddies over at Bloody Disgusting have alerted us to the fact that they’re hosting the trailer for George A. Romero Presents Deadtime Stories Volume I. After our man at AFM first told me about this project and we blogged about it, it’s been on the MovieSet radar. I loved Romero’s horror TV anthology Tales From the Darkside when I was a kid and his Creepshow film so I’ve got nothing but high hopes for this puppy.

Three shorts make up the material for Volume I and if things are rosy for the makers of the movie, Part II could be filming come next spring.

Here’s a close-up look at the film’s promo poster:

Exclusive: Insider info on George Romero’s new zombie movie

MovieSet reporter Quinn Bender speaking with Nicolas Chartier of Voltage Pictures

Today the MovieSet team had the chance to talk to Nicolas Chartier, the president of Voltage Pictures. Nicolas was attending the Vancouver International Film Forum and had just finished a panel about the business side of film and the chaos that people in the biz are dealing with right now. After the panel he gave MovieSet an exclusive video interview. That will be appearing on our site soon, but right now I wanted to get word out about some exciting news concerning George A. Romero’s newest zombie movie. Romero is the king of the zombie film genre, having birthed it with his 1968 black and white classic Night of the Living Dead. He also brought us Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead and most recently Diary of the Dead — and in three days he will begin filming his latest zombie epic in Toronto, Canada. So with two zombie fans standing there (my illustrious pal and co-blogger Mike Browne being the ultimate zombie freak) we had to prod the producer of Diary of the Dead as well as the new Romero flick to tell us what was going down with the picture. And Nicolas did.

The first thing Chartier told us was confirmed by Bloody Disgusting at around the same time we were yakking to the man himself, that Romero’s new zombie movie is definitely not a sequel to Diary of the Dead. Right now the film doesn’t as yet have a title, a fact that Nicolas joked around with us about as he referred to it as “Something of the Dead”. “‘Dead’ will be definately in the title, we just don’t know as yet what will be the complete title,” he told us. Chartier’s company, Voltage Pictures, handled the international sales for Diary of the Dead and are also involved with Romero’s new movie project.

Romero’s first day of filming is on Sunday, with the production shooting in Toronto. When I asked him if the reason why Romero’s back to film his new zombie movie in Canada (Land of the Dead was filmed in Toronto a couple of years back) was because he liked the Canadian crew or incentives, Chartier said no, it’s actually because Romero is now an official citizen of Canada. “He just got his Canadian passport,” Nicolas said, adding that Romero now calls the city of Toronto his home. Holy crap! The godfather of zombies is now a Canadian citizen??! Canadian horror fans, today is a proud day to be a member of the red and white maple leaf brigade!

Finally, Nicolas did give us one tiiiny little scoop about what kind of new zombie tricks we can expect to see in the new movie. Here’s a hint: it’s a new environment for Romero but it’s a place where fellow zombie/horror helmer Lucio Fulci went two decades ago. “We’re shooting underwater zombies,” Chartier said with a grin. “They’re swimming, grabbing people’s legs, pulling them down. It’s a lot of fun.”

It definitely sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Watch for our full video interview with Nicolas Chartier, President of Voltage Pictures who were responsible for international sales for Personal Effects as found on MovieSet, to appear soon on MovieSet! In the meantime, to whet your appetite for aquatic zombies, let me present to you this now classic scene from Lucio Fulci’s Zombie from 1979:
