Warner Bros. responds to angry Harry Potter fans

Wednesday, October 01, 2008

After Warner Bros. shuffled the release date of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from November 2008 to July 2009, legions of Harry Potter fans cried into the ethereal realm of cyberspace to express their displeasure. Sure, Warner Bros. released an official statement to reassure the fans that they weren’t trying to intentionally hurt them — but suppose that there was another response to the fan outcry? That’s the idea behind this comedic short about to be thrown at your eyeballs:

Warner Bros. chief responds to Harry Potter fans

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

That tremendous scream that you heard this past Monday was the combined yell of millions of Harry Potter movie fans upset over the eight month delay to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. On Monday Warner Bros. decided to push back the release of the sixth HP movie from November 2008 to July 2009, sending Potterheads into a tizzy and also opening the door for the team at Summit Entertainment to move up the release of Twilight to Harry’s old opening date.

Facing a growing fan backlash and with word entering the larger mainstream circles, Warners president and chief operating officer Alan Horn finally had to address the issue personally, dropping this note out into the maelstrom and hoping that it will quell the savage fanbase:

“Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our
moving Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to Summer 2009.

“Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would
certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10
years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of
the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability.

“The decision to move Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was not
taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans.
We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you
for your ongoing enthusiasm and support.

“If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap
between Half-Blood Prince and the much-anticipated first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which opens in November 2010.

“So although we have to wait a little longer for Half-Blood Prince,
the wait from that film until Deathly Hallows will be less than 18
months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a
little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

Alan Horn
President, Chief Operating Officer
Warner Bros.”

Yeah, but will throwing yourself on the sword work Alan or have the fans of Harry been angered too greatly by removing their promised Christmas present?

Harry Potter vacates the holidays, leaving the vampires of “Twilight” an opening

Monday, August 18, 2008

The sixth film in Warner Bros. epic Harry Potter film series has been pushed back eight months. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince had originally been scheduled for release on November 21, a juicy position for the holiday box office season. But Warners has decided to change its plans, leaving the date open for some other film to snatch.

With Harry Potter 6 repositioned to open next July, that left the door wide open for Twilight to come and take it. Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s young adult novel has been called the next Harry Potter, and certainly the fans of Twilight have been looking forward to seeing their heroes come to life on the silver screen. The film had been slated to open in early December, well away from Half-Blood Prince, but has now moved up its release and taken over the 11/21 date.

So why did Warners move the next Harry Potter film to next summer? The studio insists that it didn’t need the time to finish the production and explains that it merely wanted to beef up its schedule for next summer. Still, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will now face much more competition when it comes out next July while Twilight could stand to benefit tremendously from the Potter fans that had been hoping to see their tween fantasy before Christmas. Let me go out on a limb here but I’d daresay that Twilight could have just easily added another $40 million dollars to its gross just from this move.
