The guys at TheSubStream give some stellar filmmaking advice with some quirky and practical tutorial videos. They also shot a huge collection of updates around the Midnight Madness events at TIFF.

While catching up on their Toronto-hilarity, I caught the “Watch This, Instead” review of ‘Inglourious Basterds’. Sure the movie has been out for a lil while now but I felt compelled to share this since host Mike articulates what I’ve tried to say about this film since watching it.

In brief: There is *something more* here than the usual set dialog pieces, Mexican stand-offs and sudden bursts of violence - it isn’t a mockumentary and it’s not a re-enacted period piece and it’s not mad-cap caper … but it’s a little of each and more … with handful of other spices thrown in. It’s a movie about movies, remixed with itself and reflected through a mirror … A movie that will get better with subsequent viewings too I suspect.

Be sure to subscribe to TheSubStream’s Youtube channel and check out their new site but mostly hear Mike’s insightful wisdom - including his opinion on which of Tarantino’s film is his masterpiece - delivered with just the right dose of pretension.

This was a good summer for movies. I find it increasingly difficult to differentiate how great one summer is from the next. Last year there was “Dark Knight,” “Wall-E” and “Iron Man.” Before that there was “Transformers, “Bourne Ultimatum,” and “Stardust.” Each year has a handful of great summer flicks, but this summer seemed to really stand apart as having a great lineup of blockbusters and surprises.

Here are my top 10 films of the summer of 2009 on this week in “Scene Selection.”

10) Harry Potter and the Half Blood Princewas an impressive spectacle with the effects and camera work to wow, but ultimately the plot lacked something to make it truly great. It did deliver on great characters, and the angst of a teenager. It is one of the best in the series, ranking second to “Prisoner in Azkaban” in my opinion. Look out for “The Deathly Hallows” next year.

9) Public Enemieshit the right notes for me. I know many people hate it, but the style really worked for me for what it did to break away from unwritten Hollywood rules. The plot was never meant to be deep because the legend was stripped away, and for once we were given a biopic of John Dillinger without his lore. It also had the best shootout sequences of the year, with two masterful scenes that deliver the standoffs.

8) Moon was an interesting sci-fi flick that looked great for a low budget flick, and was well acted, but it remained unconvincing as a revolutionary pic due to its predictability. It was great to have a different type of antagonist that was not who we thought it would be. It also was one of those special summer films that left me thinking for days after viewing it. Its themes are excellent and it is well worth seeing.

Movie: ‘Inglourious Basterds

Grade: Borderline B/B- (3 out of 4 stars)

Inglourious Basterds‘ is not a movie. Well, I guess I’m wrong there. Since it is shown in theaters nationwide and has a long running time, you can call it a movie. It is not conventional, even, or ingenious enough to stand on its own. That’s not to say it isn’t good or even great at times. What I mean to say is that “Inglourious Basterds” is a Tarantino movie that in essence is a series of shorts.

Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

The film stars Brad Pitt as Lt. Aldo Raine, Christopher Waltz as the evil Col. Hans Landa known as ‘The Jew Hunter,’ and Mélanie Laurent as Shosanna. They are the stars and almost share equal screen time. Lt. Raine is the head of a special force of American troops, the Basterds, in World War II, in charge of wrecking havoc in Nazi occupied France.

Shosanna is an escaped Jew who runs a Parisian theater, which will be holding a Nazi film premiere Col. Landa tracks down Jews and terminates them, including Shosanna’s family, and he is in charge of theater security. The film follows these three characters and spins a web of a plot around the eventful film premiere, which the Basterds and Shosanna want to massacre. Along the way, mischief and mayhem ensue, in regular Tarantino style.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as “The Basterds,” Raine’s squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. MovieSet offers thanks to all the participants in the Souvenirs de Cannes campaign. Was great to see all the blog posts, tweets etc. about out MovieSet’s unique & exclusive coverage of the Cannes film festival!

Souvenirs de Cannes are heading to these movie fans (check out some of the topics they covered in the included comments). We are especially pleased to see all the countries who chimed in including a Jim carrey fansite from Denmark - crazy!

“Attention movie buffs: Movieset.com, a local site that covers all things film, covering all aspects of the Cannes Film Festival and will be running a contest to give away official merchandise. Stay tuned to their official Cannes portal, their Twitter @movieset, or search Twitter using the tag Cannes09.”

“The Cannes Film Festival recently ended and there were a ton of movies screened. I wish I could have seen them, but I will have to wait. Movieset was able to get some great movie panel videos from the festival and I thought it would be cool to share a couple of them with you because they are actually pretty cool to watch.”

“Whether Academy Award winning director Robert Zemeckis will do films outside of the 3D motion capture in the future is debatable but regardless, what we have seen of his Christmas Carol retelling does look rather stunning.  Below MovieSet shows Jim Carrey and Robert Zemeckis talking on their work on the film and what to expect.”

Plus:

We’ll send their memorabilia pronto-  or rather, “bientôt”. We *might* have a few more goodies so keep the bloggage coming about any of the films we covered at Cannes, including:

Welcome to another episode of The Behind The Scenes Show with Eric Fell and Shaun Stewart. This time we take a look at two exciting new movies from Cannes and we wrap up our Cannes 2009 coverage! First off its Terry Gilliam’sThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus‘ which was Heath Ledgers last movie, then we look at Jane Champion’s ‘Bright Star‘. Enjoy!

imaginarium of dr parnassusThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus‘ is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary ‘Imaginarium’, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this ‘coming of age’ milestone and Dr Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls. Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter’s hand in marriage to the man that helps him win. In this captivating, explosive and wonderfully Abbie Cornishimaginative race against time, Dr Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles - and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all…

Bright Star‘ : London 1818: a secret love affair begins between 23 year old English poet, John Keats (Ben Whishaw), and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish), an outspoken student of fashion. This unlikely pair started at odds; he thinking her a stylish minx, she unimpressed by literature in general. It was the illness of Keats’s younger brother that drew them together. Keats was touched by Fanny’s efforts to help and agreed to teach her poetry. By the time Fanny’s alarmed mother and Keats’s best friend Brown realised their attachment, the relationship had an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers were swept into powerful new sensations, “I have the feeling as if I were dissolving”, Keats wrote to her. Together they rode a wave of romantic obsession that deepened as their troubles mounted. Only Keats’s illness proved insurmountable.

Both these movies were at Cannes, and so was MovieSet.  You can check out exclusive content from our coverage of the 62nd Annual Cannes International Film Festival.  We have great footage of movies and the actors from those movie like, Christmas Carol, Inglourious Basterds and Agora, amongst others! Check it out!
