5) When shooting fight scenes does the location play a role in staging the sequences?

For sure. I try to set the fights in interesting locations and stage them with the fight choreographer to utilize the setting. A couple examples: (Spoiler Alert) In the opening warehouse location, the actors flip a table, run through debris, Forrest picks up a pipe, knocks a gun loose from Tony, they fight, Forrest gets the gun and shoots a cop on the second level, flees up a 30 foot ladder and after a few punches, falls to his death. In that location- the floor was cement- so there was not as much “ground game” in the fight. Of course we had a stunt performer do the highfall… but I did hang Forrest upside down which was fun (not for him). In the case of “The Cage” in the prison- I asked for a layer of foam padding to be painted like the flooring, so the fighters could take wrecks and not get hurt. It’s always great to see the impact- and that made it possible, though for some of the crazy falls of course we had pads, and covered the scene in a variety of ways to sell each fall or wreck.

6) Tell us a little about the actors and fighters in the film, and how your direction changes for experienced actors versus the fighters who might be less experienced?

Vinnie Jones plays a crime boss, and he works in such an authentic way- his performances are amazing. We would talk briefly before the scenes and I gave him very minor notes- which he adjusted to perfectly. He never took the dialog in an obvious direction, and his threats were either charming or matter of fact– instead of over-the-top- and that gave his character so much more power. I just shot another film with Tony Shiena, who plays the wronged undercover Cop. Tony has that combination of acting and fighting chops- and Model good looks so these films (Locked Down and Circle of Pain) could break him to another level. Dwier Brown plays an evil prison guard- which is very against type for him. We have known each other for 20 years- he made a cameo in a music video I directed right after he played Kevin Costner’s father in ‘Field of Dreams’. I always try to remember the people who did me a solid and Dwier is an excellent actor… the same goes for David Fennoy – who plays Tonys cellmate and eventual trainer. I wrote the role for him- (along with writer Glase Lomond) as David played a similar mentor role in a film I directed called ‘Clash’- and he was legit in that too. He has that combination of heart and timeworn experience.

Bai Ling and I worked together on ‘The Lazarus Papers’ in Thailand and ‘Circle of Pain’ in Texas, and she loves traveling so did this smaller role as a favor. Bai plays a prison guard with some tricks up her sleeve and has an “interesting” scene with Vinnie Jones. Sarah Schultz plays a lawyer who comes to the aid of Tonys character, this is our first time working together, and like the other professional actors above- we can communicate very openly and make improvements to the characters as we shoot. The MMA fighters are mostly new to acting- but I try to help them deliver lines from an authentic place and keep things street and fight legit. Sometimes it’s a matter of explaining their marks and what the camera sees, and with the fight choreographers- explaining how to “sell” kicks and punches without connecting. (yes- there were a few “connections”). All of them worked hard on set and never complained no matter how many takes I wanted. Rashad Evans is very fluid and poetic in his style of fighting and he took a very “uncool” role. In one scene he gets his face smashed in creamed spinach- and he did it take after take even when I told him he did not have to until the close ups. He was that committed and I respect the man. Cheick Kongo is just the biggest, nicest guy around- and all the girls on the set loved him. He looks mean- but I had to push him to trash talk- because he is so polite in real life. Forrest Griffin has a very unusual sense of humor- and he really enjoyed firing guns more than the movie fighting – but he too did whatever I asked of him. Kimbo has one of the longest fights in the film and he would not even sit down between takes- it was that fight which made me realize how much strength and endurance these MMA guys have… and yeah- Kimbo is a prolific trash talker.

7) With your audience being subjected to more and more ‘real’ UFC/MMA fighting, how does that change or influence what you bring to the screen?

In ‘Circle Of Pain’, we tried to keep the fights (with Fight Choreographer Arnold Chon) very authentic to the sport- so we played by the rules and made the fights less flashy. But with ‘Locked Down’- we made a conscious effort to break the rules- in the prison setting anything goes- shanks, spitting, 2 against 1- flashy moves and kicks. Arnold Chon makes a cameo with his signature – spinning, flying kick… which looks great on film though in a real MMA match- it would be just too precarious to be realistic. Bottom line- it’s the STORY that gives the Fans something they do not get in a real fight, to see the MMA stars as characters who talk smack and fight in settings far outside their personas in the ring. I also loved the promotion MovieSet did for Beatdown- (I was one of the judges) where we had the fans submit clips of their fight game- and we picked unknown Kevin Mattson- for a cameo in the film. When I saw his audition- I went to bat for him because he is a diehard MMA fan, working his butt off in gravity boots upside down and staying cut as a young “Grandpa” and Martial Artist. The great thing about this growing sport is that it transcends language barriers, countries and time. People all over the world can relate to the physical demands of fighters- the heart and that Warrior spirit. Look at Heath Herring and Frank Mirs fights against Brock Lesnar- they may have lost but they never quit! It’s hard for me to watch those fights again now that I’ve worked with them- but I really admire their amazing resilience. They have to dig down deep to keep going and not tap out. I watched the Mir/Lesnar fight with Arnold Chon, Rudy Youngblood, and Wesley Snipes- all Warriors- and when Frank smiled after taking a pounding that we did not think anyone could withstand- the room erupted. And BTW- Frank Mir was looking better than ever when I shot him in Las Vegas for ‘Circle of Pain’. Very Focused… Never count Mir out. Fighting as a sport and martial arts have roots from the beginning of time, to the gladiators, to the UFC, Pride, and beyond. Fighters like Rashad Evans Heath Herring, and other MMA stars who take acting seriously- can become the next wave of international Action stars. And they have the street credibility and true action figure status to back it up. Besides- they are fun to watch.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us and our MovieSet audience, we really appreciate it! Let’s get right to it:

1) How did this project (Locked Down) and the other MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) films (Circle of Pain, Beatdown) you are shooting come to you?

I developed ‘Locked Down’ from scratch, along with about 10 other Action / MMA projects, written in collaboration with two of my main co-writers, Glase Lomond & Bobby Mort. I have been working with (distributor/executive producers) Barry Brooker and Stan Wertlieb at Grindstone for years, and they wanted to do a slate of films with me in this genre, so they choose 5 (with the help of Ryan Black) and I connected with various producers to help get them made. ‘Locked Down’ is the third film “in the can” from this slate – after ‘Circle of Pain’ – which I directed, and ‘Beatdown’ which I executive produced (directed by Mike Gunther)…. the next two are Action/Westerns, and most of the rest will get made someday. I look at these MMA/Action films as a new genre- combining real actors with real fighters who are action stars already to their fans.

2) How and when did Kimbo Slice get involved in the film?

Kimbo Slice is an Internet legend of course, and I have a deep urban music video background, so I have been wanting to put Kimbo in something for a while now (as did Barry Brooker) so I went after him first. I heard Kimbo was really hard to nail down for films because he had a bad experience on another one, and he is so focused on fighting. After much correspondence with his manger – Icey Mike- I got a text to meet them in Hollywood at midnight. I did, and Kimbo heard me out- we shook on it- and we have done two films together so far and now have a great working relationship. Kimbo takes direction well, is very tough and gave me his all.

3) What was your biggest challenge while shooting ‘Locked Down’?

Half the battle on this film was getting it started. We had several scheduling delays, and originally were going to shoot the film in New Orleans so I prepped and re-wrote the script for specific locations in N.O. – so when we switched countries (to Canada)- I had to re-prep and revise the script- and deal with the snow and cold of Winnipeg and make that work for the project. (We did end up shooting the Kimbo sequence in New Orleans- because of scheduling and I gave him my word that we would not change the date). I usually shoot in places like Thailand, Tahiti, or The Florida Keys (read: warm and tropical) so shooting in Minus 32 (with a 40 plus wind-chill) was brutal for cast and crew and we did have some delays with the RED cameras shutting down in the cold. One time I left my coffee in the truck, came back and it was literally a frozen block of brown Ice. That kind of cold slaps you in the face and hurts in new ways that I have not felt before. But the crew in Winnipeg was solid.

On the first day – even though it was snowing- we still were able to get the first shot off (an Exterior) just 37 minutes from call time- and shot 87 set ups that day (a new record for me). Half of our day was outside and the other in an unheated industrial building shaped like a giant freezer. We had a swat team, shoot outs, a drug deal, a fight (with Forrest Griffin and Tony Schiena) and stunts with a High Fall, etc – all in one day! Day 2 a blizzard came in and shut down the last two hours, and Day 3 was almost cancelled, half the crew was stranded or delayed on the way to set in Selkirk (an hour away), so everyone was given the choice- they could stay home, go back home through the blizzard, or show up whenever they could. I just started shooting with whatever elements arrived and eventually almost everyone and everything showed up and we made our day. So it was tough- but so was my crew.

4) Does a shorter shooting schedule help or hinder your process?

I would love more time to shoot these films- I had 2 second unit days and just 13 days of principal photography to make an action film with weather issues! BUT- I am very focused and committed to keeping things on budget and on schedule. Once the parameters are set- I play within the lines- which means doing the readers digest version of some scenes and narrowing down the story to its key elements. I edited the first hundred music videos I directed- so I know what I need to shoot in order to cut a scene- and what I do Not need. On these schedules- I can’t shoot all the angles and lenses and coverage I would if I had more time – but I make sure the scene “Works” and “Tells the Story” before I move on. With more time and money there would be more toys and more fancy camerawork- but the “Through-Line” trumps all- so the audience can follow the story, cares about the characters and stays connected to the plot. This was my first film working with cinematographer Samy Inayeh- and he was fantastic and fast, so I feel like we made a great little genre film with an artistic look. Samy shot another film for Grindstone called ‘Unrivaled’ and I loved the look- so I reached out to him. In Music Videos- I have worked with some of the greatest cinematographers early in their careers – Mathew Libatique (Iron Man) Ericson Core (Fast and the Furious) Jeff Cronenweth (Fight Club) and Samy could be on a similar path. ‘Locked Down’ had a hard timeline- but it was worth it. And BTW- we kept 100% on schedule and wrapped 1 minute early :-).

Next up from the set of ‘Circle of Pain,’ Director Daniel Zirilli sits down with MMA fighters Roger Huerta and Heath Herring and talks about making the jump from working with musicians – to working with fighters – and getting the best out of his actors.

These three have been working on upcoming action/drama Circle of Pain. The story goes that following an in-ring accident, Dalton Hunt retired from the world of mixed martial arts at the top of his game. Unable to outrun his guilt, he lost his family, his title, and his way. But when a crooked promoter lures him back into a fight against the current undefeated champ, Colin ‘The Brick’ Wahle, Dalton must enlist the aid of an enigmatic trainer to turn him back into a warrior so he can stand tall and do battle once again.

The story behind the making of ‘Amazon Falls’ sounds like a movie in itself. With no script approved, but a cast and crew on stand-by, Director Katrin Bowen called on her friend, Writer Curry Hitchborn who cranked out a complete script in two weeks (at the expense of his health and sanity apparently).

The screenplay was turned around in record time and the roles cast to tell the story of a B-actress who’s career is done – except she’s the only one who won’t accept it.

In this collection of interviews from the set, a variety of actors and creatives including (friend of MovieSet) Garry Chalk playing a security guard, April Telek as ‘Jana,’ Executive Producer Darren Reiter, Production Coordinator Drew Scott, William B. Davis as ‘Calvin,’ Line Producer Robyn Wiener, Ben Ratner as ‘Derek’.

They discuss their motivations for participating in the project during the hectic 12 day shoot and all express their respect and admiration for the renegade director Katrin Bowen. For her part, she mentions the bliss she felt while seeing the whole picture come together, describing the feeling as ‘being on happy pills the whole time I was shooting – it was crazy.’

Amazon Falls Synopsis

JANA is a fading B-movie actress famous for her roles in Amazon movies where she portrayed a variety of pre-Xena warrior-princesses. Desperately trying to keep her leg in the B-movie game, she pursues her career with a zealous fervor. But the clock is ticking. She is on the cusp of forty and it’s now or never. And she will not be dispirited by her job at a sleazy nightclub nor the ceaseless grind of waiting for the big break. Encouraged by a colourful cast of friends and co-workers who surround her and encour- age her dream, she assails her auditions with an urgency that will transform her forever. Yes, she will get her break!

Movie: ‘The Hurt Locker‘

Simply put, “The Hurt Locker” is one of the greatest war films I have ever seen (I have to admit I have many still to see). The cast captures the stresses of war in all aspects, and the writing evokes raw emotion that questions the humanity within all of us. Every aspect of the film fits within the opening quote “war is a drug.” The fighting and chaos of war drives the main character, and pushes the audience along with the rush. “The Hurt Locker” became my favorite film of the year after just one viewing.

Jeremy Renner stars as Staff Sergeant William James, a bomb specialist, in charge of disarming all sorts of ordinates. He enters the film as a man apart from his squad by putting them in danger during their first operation together. His two squad partners, Sergeant JT Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge, only have a few weeks left on tour. You can quickly imagine how they feel about this “wild-man” putting them in harm’s way. The story charts their days together for a few weeks, tackling their relationships with each other. Without spoiling too much, the ending ties the story together perfectly and leaves you knowing what becomes of these soldiers.

While the acting creates a certain sense of intensity, the cinematography and camera style complete this depth. Most of the film is shot using the popular hand-held technique, and it is used perfectly for mood and tone of the film. A man who lives on the brink of life or death needs a style to evoke his state of mind, and director Kathryn Bigelow (known for “Point Break”) hits it spot on.

You may be asking “What is ‘the hurt locker’?” the film doesn’t clearly explain what the title refers to, but it hints at the possibilities. Easily put, it could be the mental state when you are between life and death, with adrenaline rushing, and not worrying about death at all. Staff Sgt. James exists only within the hurt locker. He is a man pained by meaningless everyday life, needing to be on the edge. It isn’t something the military creates through dehumanization. It is his human nature, and this character study is fascinating. It begs to question how each of our minds is wired, and what makes a man tick.

The film moves outside of politics and conventional war themes dealing with humanity and depression, To attempt an understanding of a man himself. By the end, that man never waivers from his true nature, keeping in step with who he is at the beginning. His journey throughout the few depicted weeks is tiring depressing and heart wrenching. One of the most powerful scenes on screen is Sgt. James breaking down while taking a shower in full uniform. This image alone captures what it means to be a victim of war, past or present. That is something “Hurt Locker” perfects: the psychological effects of battle as the war are happening. The main victim, Specialist Eldridge, has a broken psyche, yet he is forced to suppress it to enter the war zone for each operation.

“The Hurt Locker” is not without flaw. The story introduces several characters only to kill them off in the same sequence. Some of these are very intriguing people, yet they get shallow development and fade quickly. The pacing is a little slow at times through the second act, but it builds toward a great resolution. The bomb disarmament scenes are thrilling yet they seem a touch repetitive. These are extremely minor drawbacks to the greatest Iraq war film yet, and it has an actor worthy of an Academy Award.

Overall “The Hurt Locker” hits every chord of action, drama, comedy, and suspense to create one emotional ride. The desert firefight is one of the best standoffs I have screened, and I left the theater completely satisfied. As the tagline puts it, “You’ll know when you’re in it” and once you’re in, you’re engrossed.

Obviously, Megan has the upper hand going in since she’s a familiar face for fans — and in some cases, a possible reason they bought a ticket. But one gander at Isabel and it’s clear she’s going to put up a major fight.

Megan has set the internet ablaze on all four corners. No one is comparable, sure there are names out there that are very popular but with most of them they have reached their ceiling. Megan Fox will be searched for years and years to come.

And you think she’s hot this year? What until next year when she has three more movies under her belt.

But tell me how can someone like Isabel Lucas actually stand a chance to someone as the insanely popular and gorgeously formidable Megan Fox?

Pound for pound Megan Fox is the equivalent of Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime and Isabel Lucas is a 75-1 underdog.

Megan Fox vs Isabel Lucas is fun for this summer, but when summer ends you’ll realize the absurdity of such a merit less comparison.

i saw the film and was simply taken aback by Isabel’s beauty, but after searching up images of her i noticed that she simply does not look good in pictures. i also searched up Megan fox’s pics and she looks as stunning in pictures as she does in video. Lucas seems to look hotter than fox in video but wayyy worse in pictures. she simply is not photogenic but is really hot (looks like a 7.5 in pics, 10 in video) anyone know the reason behind this? and are there any other actors/actresses you’ve also noticed this phenomenon in?

While GSP lives/eats/breathes “Rush” in The Octagon (and his hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada), he plays “The Crusher” in upcoming film “Death Warrior“ written by martial artist Hector Echavarria.

The film has more than just those two attached; Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Keith Jardin, and Rashad Evans also lend their real world fighting expertise to this MMA-driven movie.

Not only were the special effects and budget really big on “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” so were the on set parties.

This according to Tyrese Gibson who said after the filming he would throw massive parties during the shoot, including one with 5,600 people on an aircraft carrier.

“There was just so much energy on the set. Michael runs a really tight ship. He just keeps everyone on the edge and at full-throttle. Man, I’d think, if I don’t throw a party, I’m going to go crazy right now,” said the singer turned actor who plays USAF Master Sergeant Epps in the film.

That interesting, but ultimately pointless, information was the norm at the online press conferences for Transformers held on June 19 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

In the absence of Shia LaBeouf (who was booked doing television interviews), the biggest gets were director Michael Bay and LaBeouf’s co-star Megan Fox. They were joined by Gibson and fellow actors Josh Duhamel, Kevin Dunn, and Ramon Rodriguez. Another more technical panel included co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and visual effects supervisor Scott Farrar of ILM.

Michael Bay just made it in time for his conference, reportedly coming to the hotel straight from a plane that originated in Moscow. He was quick to let everyone know, on numerous occasions, that “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is “summer fun. It’s a robot movie.”

But being as none of the robots were in attendance (we’ll get back to them in a minute), we were left with the actors who had to interact with them. Though he spoke the least of anyone on the panel, being the newest member of the cast, Ramon Rodriguez (who plays Sam’s roommate Leo and can also be seen as Denzel Washington’s colleague in “The Taking of Pelham 123”) told one of the best stories.

Rodriguez is one of two actors who get to interact directly with Devastator, the evil Decepticon who is made up of seven already giant robots to form one HUGE one. (ILM’s Scott Farrar said that those scenes were the biggest ILM has ever had to create and one of the shots literally made a computer explode.) In the scene shown in the trailer where Devastator is sucking up sand, Rodriguez had to hold on for dear life and popped his shoulder.

“We were shooting the Devastator scene and I had to hold onto this pole. Michael Bay thought it would be a really good idea to bring out two fans that blow 100 miles per hour each and put them right in front of my face. I had sand, soot and dirt blowing right in my face. I had two guys behind me with wires attached to my ankles, pulling me. Not enough yet. We need cars. So we brought two cars and he literally had them attached to a hydraulic crane, flipped literally inches above my head. They guys were yanking at the tables and, yeah, on one of the takes my shoulder popped out and we continued rolling. That was probably the shot you used. Thank you, Mike,” Rodriguez said.

Then there’s Megan Fox. Oh Megan Fox. In person, she is even more beautiful than she is on screen – if that’s possible – but also seemed much more restrained than she did in a recent Entertainment Weekly feature. She discussed how “Transformers” has given her the ability to do films “I don’t even feel like I deserve to be a part of” like the upcoming comic book adaptation “Jonah Hex” and how she had to force herself to watch the film by drinking “an entire glass of champagne so I could get through the sitting of it.”

But the best story, at least for the guys out there, was the one about how Michael Bay made her try on all of her outfits while he was in the process of auditioning several, young male actors.

“I had like 18 different outfits. It was white jean shorts and then a pink belly shirt. Light motorcycle boots. I was wearing them and Mike was selecting them in the process of auditioning,” Fox said.

Unfortunately, girls don’t get a similar scene that was conceived specifically for them.

“Tyrese offered to be introduced in the second movie by doing a shirtless carwash scene with Optimus [Prime], but Mike didn’t go for it,” Josh Duhamel said.

But, as Michael Bay said again and again, this is a robot movie. And one of the major issues people are going to have with “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” are the Autobots known as The Twins, Mudflap and Skids, voiced by Reno Wilson and Tom Kenny respectively. They play a major role as the film’s comic relief and Bay spoke about the soon to be controversial characters.

“I wanted two kinds of younger Transformers. But with those two guys, we used the guy who played SpongeBob and another actor. What’s interesting is that, when you work with voice-actors, especially with The Twins, they did a lot of improv for their parts. We liked their improv and, from there, we would animate to their stuff. When you’re doing character animation and you’re building the character, it’s not like an actor where you shoot the scene and you’ve got it and you move on. With animation, you get the dialogue and then some animation and then a bit more of the dialogue and you keep going back and forth and it just builds until you have the shot you want. I just wanted something that would appeal to younger kids that seemed to really gravitate to those two characters. It’s like ‘The Little Engine That Could’ with the Devastator scene,” Bay said.

Here are some other geeky side notes that came out of the press conferences.

- Decepticon Soundwave (the boom box/cassette tape guy from the original show) plays an integral part in this film. And though actor Frank Welker, who originally voiced the character in the cartoon, returns, Soundwave’s deep and distorted voice doesn’t. Screenwriter Alex Kurtzman confirmed that they had that voice in the film for a long time during production but ultimately had to change it. “We actually tried it. We had his voice like that for a long time. What we found in the mix was that it was impossible to understand what he was saying.”

- Most of the actors and even the director, as of June 19, had yet to see the finished movie. The reason? It wasn’t locked and ready to go until the previous Saturday, June 13. That’s roughly 10 days before it opens to the public.

- President Obama gets name dropped in the film and there’s a simple reason for it. Michael Bay told the story. “I was walking in a Vegas airport and he was walking — by himself — carrying a hanging bag over his shoulder. This was after I had just seen him at the beginning of his campaign. I said, ‘Hey, I saw you the other night and liked what you had to say.’ I introduced myself and he said, ‘What do you do?’ and I said, ‘I’m a director.’ He said, ‘What movies?’ I said and he said, ‘Oh, you’re a big-ass director. I’ve seen a bunch of your movies.’ That’s why I decided to put him in.”

- And if any fans want to party like they are the stars of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” head to your local Chili’s. That’s where much of the actor’s time was spent while on set in New Mexico because, according to Megan Fox and Michael Bay, because that was the only restaurant around.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen - The trailers didn’t look too promising. The gigantic billboards hanging all over town? Even less so.

What I’d Heard – The second prehistoric comedy of the summer. Of the two, my prediction was that Land of the Lost would be the one to see. But considering what a letdown the Ferrell comedy turned out to be, perhaps Year One could turn out to be a diamond in the rough.

What I Wanted – Look, we aren’t talking high art here. If this one makes me laugh and does it with some level of consistency, then it counts as a success.

EXPERIENCE

What Turned Me On – Year One stumbles out of the gate with a heavy dose of schticky humor that offers little promise of what’s to come. The danger of a one-note Saturday Night Live joke lasting 90 minutes appeared to be a distinct possibility. But then, something happened. A funny joke here, a minor laugh there, a clever little knock at a historical moment over there… Soon, we were off and running. The laughs aren’t big knee-slappers, but they are peppered throughout and occur often enough for an enjoyable experience.

Michael Cera’s unique brand of low energy humor offers many of Year One’s funniest moments. Jack Black is doing his usual thing; funny at points, but without Cera, Black offers nothing more than a retread of the dreadful Nacho Libre. Black’s humor works in doses when it’s part of an ensemble. In addition to Cera, David Cross and Oliver Platt lend memorable goofy supporting characters that compete nose for nose with the leads for laughs. Pay attention for an endless list of cameo appearances including, to name just a few, Ramis, Paul Rudd and Bill Hader.

What Turned Me Off - Well, as I mentioned above, Jack Black’s schtick is wearing thin these days, but when he isn’t the center attention, his brand of smarmy humor can illicit a few laughs and avoid being too grating. Year One is at its weakest when it goes for the most obvious jokes, but as the humor branches out and gets weirder, the laughs work regardless of high concept plot devices. At one point Cera must give a bare-chested Platt an oil rubdown, a cringe-inducing moment in any setting. As with any comedy of this nature, there are a few clunkers, but overall there are more hits than misses.

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking – Michael Cera can do no wrong. Either he picks good material or he elevates even the mediocre stuff. Either way, he’s well on his way to being a big comedy star.

I Left Saying – Who knew this would be the best prehistoric comedy I’d see this summer? In all seriousness, I went in expecting very little and received a present surprise. There aren’t any huge laughs, but there’s plenty of entertainment value to recommend this one for some silly summer popcorn-munching fun.

Expiry Date - Don’t go in expecting a comedy masterpiece or anything, but Year One is consistently funny and charmingly silly. While it falls short of The Hangover’s rapid-fire assault, it’s pure, unapologetic, dumb fun. And, you heard it here first: Year One is the best prehistoric comedy of 2009.

Over the past decade, Larry David has gone from the man behind-the-scenes of the most popular, beloved show about nothing, Seinfeld, to creating a persona almost as well known as Jerry, Kramer, George and Elaine. That persona, a very slight twist on David himself, has drawn rave reviews and a loyal fan base over the course of six hit seasons on HBO with Curb Your Enthusiasm. Now, David is embarking on his most challenging endeavor to date, portraying the lead role in Woody Allen’s new comedy, Whatever Works.

As Boris Yellnikoff, David’s characterization isn’t a massive stretch from the lovable curmudgeon we’ve all come to know on Curb, but he is now infused with an unmistakable dose of Woody.

Walking into the Four Seasons ballroom to interview David, the actor is involved in a conversation with his co-stars Patricia Clarkson and Evan Rachel Wood about the premiere. “You invited a lot of people?” David asks them with a note of surprise. “Really? I guess I should. It’s too late now.”

In person, it’s nearly impossible to decipher the real Larry David from the man we’ve gotten to know so well on television. The expressions, the verbal delivery and the sense of humor are one in the same.

Although David has been in front of the camera for some time now, the loosely scripted Curb hasn’t saddled the actor with a whole lot of memorization. He admits that aspect was the biggest challenge for him. “It was hard,” says David. “I opened the script, I saw the first page was full of Boris. And then I tured to page 50 and I saw Boris on page 50 and then I went to the last page and I went, ‘Oy vae shmear.’ Yeah, it was kind of daunting to have to learn all that to tell you the truth. I am used to improvising and kind of making up most of it as I go along and it was challenging and I don’t really care for challenges.”

The younger woman

The Larry David and Woody Allen personas have some unmistakable similarities, but David wasn’t interested in aping Allen like Kenneth Branagh in Celebrity or Jason Biggs in Anything Else. “I know that’s a concern. People would say to me, ‘Well, are you gonna be doing him?’ and I would think that they were out of their minds. ‘No, I’m going to try not to do him.’ It never occurred to me to try to do him and he doesn’t want me to do him. He didn’t call me up and say, ‘I want you to do me. Have you ever seen me? Can you talk like me?’ No, it wasn’t really an issue for me at all. It wasn’t anything I thought about or even worried about. I just sort of memorized it and said it. I didn’t want to do Woody Allen.”

In the film, Boris falls for the much younger fish-out-of-water character, Melodie St. Ann Celestine, portrayed by Evan Rachel Wood. While intimate moments between the couple are discussed and Viagra is even mentioned at one point, the two never share a love scene on screen. “I don’t think anyone wants to see me having sex with anyone. It’s true,” David said.

Instead, he and Wood focused on their own comic chemistry together. “I have immediate chemistry with pretty much everyone,” says David immodestly. “Whether it’s good or it’s bad. I really can tell right off. I don’t need to get to know somebody, it doesn’t take me long… I can go out and talk to people. I know just by looking at people if I can say something nasty to them, how they’re going to react. If I can kid around with them, whether they’re going to get it or not. I have a sixth sense like that. There’s a very visceral reaction, very quickly. We were very comfortable with one another.”

I’m not insane

At first glance, Boris Yellnikoff and Larry David might seem just like two peas in a pod, but David is quick to clarify that there are plenty of important differences: “We’re different in that I’m way more normal,” says David. “I enjoy life. I play golf, I like having sex. I have normal wants and needs. He’s insane, really. He’s really on the edge. I don’t wear shorts, which is a huge difference. I’m a much better dresser than he is. We both have some disdain for the human race. And we both come from similar roots. And we probably have a, well we were both Bar Mitzvah’d I’m sure.”

The film’s title, Whatever Works, is also Boris’ philosophy about life, but David doesn’t agree. “It’s actually in conflict with my own philosophy, which is ‘whatever doesn’t work.’ That’s pretty much what I subscribe to. Anyone who finds me unattractive, that’s the one I want. Unappealing, yeah, that’s who I go for.”

Next up for David is another season of Curb, but he says he’s open to another big screen acting gig. “I just finished shooting Curb Your Enthusiasm and I’m editing that right now. I think [another lead role] would depend on the people who are producing the movies. I haven’t been inundated with offers yet. If it was something that appeals to me, I would definitely consider it.”

A Twilight fan?

Meanwhile, David is editing season seven of Curb for a September premiere and spending some quality time with his daughters, who have recently begun subjecting their father to the world of Twilight. “My kids were completely into to it. They read all the books, the whole Twilight series. I went to see Twilight with them. I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to part two whenever that comes out. I watch all the kids stuff with them. I was at a Hannah Montana concert. What kind of dad am I? Lucky kids.

So what’s next? Surely plenty of golf, maybe a Jonas Brothers concert and perhaps a comedy tour in time. David says he is contemplating a return to the stand-up stage. “I think I will, after Curb [is finished].”

Three years ago, the filmmakers behind Battle for Terra were told that making a sci-fi action-adventure epic outside the studio system was an impossible feat. Undaunted, the team of first-time feature animation producers, along with untested feature animation director Aristomenis Tsirbas, set out to find out if it was true.

The idea for Battle for Terra was born of a kind of reverse inspiration that struck Tsirbas in his youth while reading HG Wells’ War of the Worlds. He was curious of the way invading aliens were often portrayed; with the same imperialistic behavior humans have shown throughout history. However it bothered him their motives were not examined in any depth.

It gave him an idea to flip these conventions on their head: “If the aliens behave like us, why not just turn the tables and actually make them human, experiencing the invasion from the aliens’ point of view?”

Tsirbas wrote a treatment for the idea, but it would be seven years before the public would see it on the big screen. In the meantime, Tsirbas threw himself into building a career in short filmmaking and visual .

One of his projects during this time was the 2003 animated short, Terra, which went on to win several prestigious awards. The piece caught the attention of producer Keith Calder, who in 2004 was in the process of founding the animation and live-action production company, Snoot Entertainment.

“We were looking through all the festival short winners when we came across Tsirbas’ short, Terra,” Calder said. “We thought that the reverse alien invasion premise was really strong. Visually, it was unlike anything we had ever seen before.”

In short time, a full-length feature was developed under the Snoot Banner with screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos.

While Battle for Terra is first and foremost a family-friendly action adventure, it also carriers potent underlying social and environmental messages. The very reason the humans take an interest in the planet Terra – a name the humans give it from the Latin word for Earth – is that they have destroyed not just Earth itself, but also the human-colonized Venus and Mars in an interplanetary civil war.

MovieSet sat down with Tsirbas to discuss the messages of his film, the balancing act of creating intelligent but fun films for children, and the film’s interesting journey from conception to realization.

Bucking the studio system

MovieSet: By producing this film outside the studio system I assume you had limited resources. Did this impede your vision?

Tsirbas: Yeah. I had to adjust my vision because, initially I thought of it as a live action film with CGI characters. When we reviewed that with producers on an independent budget, it just seemed absolutely impossible to do on the level of quality I wanted. At that point we made it into an animated film. The production design, and the set pieces, really had to be modified to fit within the budget. That affected how the aliens looked, that affected the amount of things even like hair on the heads of humans — in many cases they were just shaved bald. It affected how the end battle played out. But in every situation we tried to be intelligent and cut back in ways that didn’t appear deficient when you were watching the film, but rather to feel as though they were creative choices. We had to walk a fine line.

On the other side, we highlighted the things that weren’t as expensive — for example: camera, editing, lighting, sound. If you concentrate on those elements they really make up for the areas that are difficult to perfect on a lower budget.

Is your accomplishment a rare exception, or can you say with confidence that other young filmmakers can now make their own CGI film, outside the studio system?

I think they can. It’s because of the emergence of new and cost effective technology. If you remember a few years back there was a kind of revolution in AV filmmaking; you had a lot of filmmakers coming out with really great work with low-cost video cameras. That’s continuing to this day… the same thing has happened over the last few years with digital animation, where you’re able to buy off-the-shelf software and use a home computer. When computer animation started, the minimum cost for a computer was about $25,000. Now you can do it with a $1,000 computer — you can actually make an animated film at home of really high-caliber, if the filmmaker applies themself in an intelligent way.  It’s democratizing animation.

Did you have more license to explore your ideas than if you went through a big studio?

Yes, definitely. When I conceived this film I knew it would probably only be produced independently, because of the more challenging themes — which by the way, I think personally children have no problem with; screenings and festivals have proven that, but I think it would scare off the studios.

The film was even riskier and more experimental when we first started making it, when we had a really tiny budget. But as we continued the producers felt it had potential for real broad appeal. So we kept much of the themes, but we adjusted some of the more experimental aspects of the film. For example, the aliens initially spoke in an actual alien language with subtitles. When we realized the film could probably appeal to a broader audience, we changed them to speak English then added a script device to compensate for that inconsistency.

Children can thrive on challenge

There appeared to be times in the story where you held back a little bit, particularly with the battle scenes and the reality of these complex situations. In regards to the battles specifically, did you feel you were holding yourself back?

Yes, but because I wanted this film to be made for kids. They’re the ones who will inherit the world we give them–there’s an ecological competent to the film that speaks to them. At the same time, I also didn’t want to present war in kind of a GI Joe, cartoonish way, where there’s no casualties. I wanted to show there is consequence to war.

We had to walk a fine line to show this to children, but in a way that’s not too extreme.  We do have casualties, we do have conflict, we do have consequences. That was very important for me to put across… we had to hold back on the blood because of the realities of the ratings system.

When Jim dies it seems like you’re walking a fine line politically as well. He sacrifices his own life for the aliens. Some could say he’s committing high treason. Were you concerned politically of what the parents might think of that?

Not in the slightest. If film doesn’t provoke some discussion, provoke thought–if it’s just entertainment then I wouldn’t want to be in this industry. The greatest films do provoke discussion. They hold a mirror up to current thought. I think my choices were relevant and justified. It honors children of today when you give them something to chew on. This film is about difficult decisions. This character, it seems he has one of two choices to make. But he thinks of a third choice, an alternative. And that’s what this film is all about: alternatives.

In order to do that we had to have some kind of exceptional thing for him to do that would raise eyebrows. It’s very important to challenge kids, and to show them there are moral complexities to armed conflict, but present it in a way that’s entertaining and fun. And why not? Kids are smart. They can understand abstract ideas.

I have absolutely no reservations about that ending.

Are you saying kids aren’t challenged enough these days, that their intelligence is not appreciated?

I would say yes. I met a lot of kids and got a chance to know this generation. They’re very smart and aware. They’re hungry for interesting, challenging, fun, exceptional content. There’s an overload of light entertainment for kids. Why not give them something more. It’s up to them to go for it.

I’ve had multiple screenings now for Battle for Terra, exclusively for children. On the whole the kids loved it, they ate it up. There were spirited discussions afterward in the Q and A. The kids had the most interesting comments and questions. To them it felt very natural to watch a film like this. The only issue seemed to be maybe with the older people, but the kids really seemed to take it to heart.

Alien sympathies

Why was it important to put the humans in the role of aggressor?

I originally wanted to just make an alien invasion film to satisfy my sense of what’s lacking in the genre, like with War of the Worlds or Independence Day where the aliens are presented as one-dimensional bad guys. I never bought that. An entire race can’t be entirely evil. They must have reasons to want to invade another planet, perhaps for reasons that are honorable–like preserving their own species. The more and more I researched the motives of why an alien race might invade another planet, it because clear their fictionalized behavior is very similar, historically, to human behavior. It became really obvious at that point to just turn it around and explore that.

In honoring the original idea of keeping balance and depth to the concepts, we had to make sure the humans — who are originally portrayed in the classic, bad-guy way–when you get to know the humans they are for the most part good people who are in a bad situation. So they feel they need to do bad things in order to live. Out of that came the theme of alternatives.

As much as the bad guys cannot be one dimensional, neither can the good guys — the honorable aliens. They have a dark past. You felt the need to balance that as well.

Absolutely. If you look at the film it starts off in a very simple way. The aliens look simple, they look like cartoons. Their world is over-idealized. But you couldn’t sustain that for an hour and a half. If we’re to have true sympathy for these aliens, we need to feel as though they were real. So underneath the facade of Utopia, there is a darkness, an oppression of a violent past. There’s an artifice, a cultish, political dogma created to suppress this past. There are shades of grey there, and of course that is the key to the Terrians’ survival.

A loveless Utopia?

Speaking of over-idealizing, I noticed there wasn’t a romance sub-plot in this film.

Isn’t that interesting? There is no romance.

Yet there were plenty of vehicles, opportunities for that. Why didn’t you give in?

I just didn’t feel it was organic to the story. I mean, there was a kind of suggestion of romance between the alien girl Mala and her best [male] friend. There’s definitely a back story there, and hints to a blossoming romance, which informed some of the action in the film. There was also a warm friendship between Mala and the human fighter pilot, which wasn’t necessarily romantic, but it definitely had the tropes of a relationship.

That was enough. To do any more would have been forced. It would have complicated the story. It just wouldn’t have been appropriate for the arc I was working with.

The Terrian world itself, was that a strict product of your imagination?

Yes. The Terrian world came as a reaction to the human world, which was very geometric with hard surfaces and angles. I wanted to do the opposite for the Terrian world. In that case it meant a lot of flowing and compound curves, raw materials, to create an aesthetic that was very fluid and beautiful. Out of that came an architectural style that had a lot of tapering involved — which you see in a lot of the biology and technology of the Terrian world as well.

We had to work in a vacuum really. To not think of anything from the human world and just see where it would lead.

Is there any particular reason why you chose to situate their society in the clouds?

There’s a very specific back story for that. I perceived them as once being more like us, land dwelling creatures who had a tendency to take the air in and keep it in their lungs. They filtered out all the oxygen and kept the helium, which allowed them to float. But what happened when there was a big war, I imagined they destroyed their world like we humans did in this potential future. I just imagined there would be a kind of nuclear winter where there is this permanent cloud layer that formed, destroying the planet. But there were these giant structures, vine-like structures that pierced the cloud layer into the sky. The creatures evolved and were able to fly past the clouds and live in these structures to start anew.

Also, therefore, they would be forbidden to go beneath the clouds and see what’s under there.

Thanks very much for your time. Would you like to add anything else?

Just how I’m really proud of what the crew helped me achieve. It’s a dream come true for a filmmaker to have a theatrical release, and in this case such a wide release. I’m really grateful so many people took a chance on me and this crazy little idea I had.

Days away from Howl starting production, Jan took time out of her busy schedule to talk about her passion for all things sound, starting out in the film business and her experience on the set of City Island, a MovieSet featured film.

MovieSet: Hi Jan, thanks for taking the time to talk to us today.

Jan: No problem.

MovieSet: For those who don’t know, what is a sound mixer?

Jan: I’m always surprised when people don’t know what a production mixer does. But if you hear the cast talking onscreen, that’s me.

MovieSet: So what are your responsibilities on set?

Jan: I’m responsible to get the cleanest production dialogue possible. My team and I are responsible for hearing and seeing things that make noise… a compressor, the refrigerator, air conditioning units, that jackhammer in the back, the barking dog, and to be able to tell the first AD who tells the director that we should go again because this happened or that happened.

Further, if there’s something in the background, like children or lots of traffic, it’s my responsibility to get wild tracks. For example, if we have a rain storm that’s only going to last a half hour, then I would make sure we get a wild track of that rain because we’re going to be filming the scene over the course of three hours. They may need that audio to make it work in post.

MovieSet: How did you first become aware of sound mixing?

Jan: I’ve always been interested in sound from the time I was a little girl. I consider the fact that I’ve played music being in some way a sound person. I did sound for theater. I had a band for five years and did the live stage mix for that group until we were big enough to get a sound mixer, but I’ve always done sound stuff. I’ve always had a recorder and microphone.

I got into the film business as a result of a downturn in the economy in the early 90s. I moved to New York and had been a paralegal for eleven years and when the economy tanked they let go two thirds of the staff of the publishing house where I was working, and I said, “That’s it, I’ve got to go back to school. What do I love?” And the answer was, “Sound.”

MovieSet: And it was sound.

Jan: And it was sound, yes.

MovieSet: And where did you go from there?

Jan: I had gone to NYU to study filmmaking because I wanted to make little poetry films. Everybody there wanted to be a director or cinematographer out of the fifty in my class. Nobody wanted to do sound. I said, well I’m passionate about that, I’ll do sound. And thereafter that’s what I’ve done.

MovieSet: How did you get your first job? Did you volunteer? Did you do a student film?

Jan: I combed the bulletin boards of NYU and around town. I put my information up there as well, but yes I volunteered. I spent a couple hundred dollars on a recorder and in a little time I was able to spend a few hundred dollars on a microphone and it just built up layer by painful layer. Now I have $130,000 worth of stuff.

MovieSet: Wow. You mentioned you record the dialogue of actors on set. Have you ever heard anything funny or do you have any strange stories if an actor’s mic’d?

Jan: Well, the fact is I say no. The first real job I had was on the set of Law and Order and one of the first things the mixer told me was if one of those wireless mics is on and you hear (the actor) telling a joke and you laugh I will kill you.

Now that I’m behind the board, as soon as the scene is finished I will pot down those microphones. My second most important job is to protect the actors from themselves.

MovieSet: So there is quite a lot of respect towards everyone else on set.

Jan: My relationship with the actors has to be based on trust. They have to trust that I’m not going to screw them up, that I’m not going to leave the mics open for them to potentially embarrass themselves in any way. The fact is even if the microphones are up I don’t hear it. I’m listening to background sound. I’m listening for that air conditioner or garbage truck. Something that’s come on that wasn’t on when we first arrived.

MovieSet: I know over the past summer you were on City Island, a film we heavily featured on our site. Could you tell us about your experience on that film?

Jan: The making of that movie is one of those things that when I’m an old lady, and I look back upon my life about all the incredible things that I’ve experienced, that will be one of the top things for a lot of reasons.

Among them, the amazing director Raymond De Felitta, who is truly a renaissance man and truly a pleasure to work with. Every person on that crew in front of and behind the camera worked really, really, really hard on it.

I can tell you one story about Mr. Garcia and his relationship to the film which was immortalized in one of the director’s video blogs. Here we are on location where Andy Garcia’s character goes on an audition. It was a really big week for Andy; he had scene after scene after emotional scene that week and we were aware of it you know, “Gee Andy’s working his buns off.”

So it comes to this seminal scene for his character in the movie. A very church-like, acoustic space so any noise was multiplied and echoed by ten. I didn’t realize it in the moment, but when I looked at the video blog, the crew, who is often boisterous, was unbelievably quiet. Everybody kept their mouths shut, purely out of respect for Mr. Andy Garcia.

And that’s a good story to tell about the movie because there was a lot of mutual respect going on everywhere.

MovieSet: You finally saw the film at private screening for cast and crew which we’ve heard went over very well.

Jan: Yes, I laughed. I cried. It was as good as I imagined it could be when I read the script. There was brilliant writing from Raymond, as always.

MovieSet: Was it the script that attracted you to the project?

Jan: Well, I worked with Raymond before on another incredible film called Cafe Society and I knew his talent from then. I suppose even if it was horrible, I would have done it out of respect for Raymond, but having worked with him before, I knew he would have never written a horrible script. To work with that quality human being is amazing.

MovieSet: From the video blogs he seems like a very charismatic guy.

Jan: Absolutely. He finds the best in everyone.

MovieSet: A lot of the films you’ve worked on are some of the best from the New York area. The Savages, Starting Out In The Evening, even going as far back as Kids. How do you get involved with those great projects?

Jan: I have no idea. Luck.

MovieSet: What’s it like working in that community?

Jan: The New York film community is a relatively small community. You see people again and again. But then, I get on this movie and I know hardly anybody on.

MovieSet: And which film is that?

Jan: Howl.

MovieSet: Could you tell us a bit about that film?

Jan: It’s based on the poem by Allen Ginsberg, and the obscenity trial its publication caused.

MovieSet: Do you think it will translate well?

Jan: Based on what I’ve read of the screenplay, the writer/directors (Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman) have done a magnificent job — and I say this as a poet — of bringing Howl to life.

And it’s animated, part of it’s animated. I think they’re going to bring it into otherworldliness. The two fellows did The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, so they have a strong background in documentaries. There are wonderful elements of all the things you would expect from that kind of writing and directing team.

MovieSet: If you were speaking to someone who is looking to get into the field of sound mixing, what skills or qualities do you think that person should have?

Jan: I think as with any craft in the film and television business, you should really love what you’re doing. That helps. That said, plenty of people that work in this business come to it whose grandfathers, fathers and sons are in the business. They sort of inherit it.

What it demands of you when you’re working seventy hours plus a week, not including commute time, you’re better off if you really love it. I don’t recommend it if you want to have a family and a life. It is a lifestyle much like owning a restaurant is a lifestyle. It demands a lot.

Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair. Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken. Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life – this time as a defendant in the courtroom.

It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality.

Voice Actor and legend Garry Chalk gives us a glimpse of what life is like in the Voice Recording Studio.

Over the years Garry Chalk has done Everything from G.I. Joe to Dragonball and continues to record some of the most memorable characters in all of Cartoon History. His work extending past the 20 year mark has brought him to an incredible comfort level; Gary comments: “I love what I do, It’s a lot of fun and it doesn’t event feel like a job to me anymore”

MovieSet and Behind the Scenes bring you this exclusive interview with legend himself.

Personally, I gasped because it is one thing to fall short of expectations with another video game movie, and another thing entirely when taking on such a serious and emotionally sensitive topic. The genocide in Darfur has killed and displaced millions of innocent people. I can only hope that he shows the utmost respect and professionalism when addressing this conflict.

One key element that may address my concern is the fact that the actors themselves will be contributing to their own dialogue and motivations.

During an interview with The Den of Geek Mr. Boll said,

“I don’t want a character to go back and be a hero if the actor doesn’t feel it: so these guys must make up their own dialogue. In the end I think it will be a better movie if we have real method actors doing something. You could not shoot a movie like Far Cry doing this, or Postal – a comedy – but you can do it with movies like Tunnel Rats, or the prison movie I did, Stoic.”

“Eric: (laughs) You’ve worked on some high profile projects like Elf. What do you find more satisfying? The high profile projects or smaller films?

Ed: Well, I don’t think Elf was a large production was it? I was delighted in how nicely it turned out. It was two weeks of wonderful easy work on that show… There’s really no difference, with Gigantic we had a certain number of interiors. Nothing lavish surrounding us. There was the scene looking for the shrooms. I was just lucky to traverse the ground as well as I did.

Eric: That was an interesting scene in the movie because I was watching it and I thought ‘Am I watching Ed Asner on mushrooms?’ I would have never expected that.

Ed: I like to keep them guessing, you know what I mean? The best scene in the film to me was Jane Alexander on the balcony with Zooey and that was a beautiful scene. And I saw finally what the hell they talk about when they talk about Jane Alexander.”

When Sara and Peter Campbell’s son Matt is diagnosed with cancer, they uproot their family to Connecticut for his treatment.  As the family settles into their new home, Matt grows increasingly disturbed by paranormal activity that seems to inhabit and possess the house.  At a loss to help her frightened family, his mother turns to an enigmatic priest who appears to rid the house of its ghosts– until the boy’s condition takes a sudden and unexplained turn for the worse and their lives are put in grave danger.

Lastly we take a look at ‘12 rounds‘ starring John Cena as New Orleans Police Detective Danny Fisher. When Fisher stops a brilliant thief, Miles, from getting away with a multi-million-dollar heist, the thief’s girlfriend is accidentally killed. After escaping from prison, the criminal mastermind enacts his revenge, taunting Danny with a series of near-impossible puzzles and tasks …12 rounds…that Danny must somehow complete to save the life of his fiancée.  Check out our interview with John Cena as well as stills and videos.

Death Warrior is about s gritty MMA fighter is forced into a twisted, underground gambling ring in which he must fight to the death with other MMA fighters in order to save his wife from certain death at the hands of a maniacal crime boss. In a desperate race against time, he is forced into a series of increasingly violent life and death matches while simultaneously piecing together the puzzle which leads him to uncover the identity of the promoter and the ultimate showdown, in which there can only be one Death Warrior.

KoF is a stylish, high-octane, live action feature based on the highly successful video game franchise, in which the last surviving descendants of three legendary clans are continuously transported to other dimensions to test their martial arts skills against an evil force that seeks to invade and infect the real world.

In Gigantic, Brian Weathersby (Paul Dano) is a 28 year-old salesman at a high-end Swedish mattress company. The afterthought child to elderly parents, and the youngest son in a trio of successful brothers, a shady oil man, a surgeon, Brian is searching for his place in the world.  Unfulfilled by his work he spends a good portion of his day pursuing his goal of someday adopting a baby from China. He gets swept up in a romance with the lovely but misguided Harriet Lolly (Zooey Deschanel) when she comes in to his store one day and falls asleep on one of the beds. To win her over, he must compete with her bear of a father, Al Lolly, an art-collecting loudmouth with a bad back and deep pockets.

Finally we check out an indie film which is slowly gaining a cult following. The movie “Rules“  is about a Nightclub security guard who is t filled with hate, particularly after being shunned by society and seeing his life spiral out of control. The constant refusals, insults and embarrassments have worn him down, eventually causing him to snap and promising to punish anyone who disrespects him.

First off Eric and Shaun talk about Quantum of Solace. The movie just released on DVD and is the sequel to Casino Royal. If you haven’t seen it yet, its a good watch, but some people would say that it wasn’t able to meet expectations after the hugely successful Casino Royal breathed life back into what had become a stale series.

Then we look at Punisher: WarZone which releases on DVD today.  Its a gritty action flick geared towards fans of the comic book. Waging his one-man war on the world of organized crime, ruthless vigilante-hero Frank Castle sets his sights on overeager mob boss Billy Russoti. After Russoti is left horribly disfigured by Castle, he sets out for vengeance under his new alias: Jigsaw.

Finally we take another look at Death Warrior. MovieSet has had exclusive access to the set during production and have tons and tons of cool content on the movie.
