The graph of Clerks

Thursday, October 09, 2008

What would a visual representation be of all the dialogue in a film? That’s the question that the folks at the Wattsei website asked when they broached the notion of laying out who said what in Kevin Smith’s first movie, Clerks. The designers color coded which characters said what lines by breaking the film down into one second chunks, then arranging these blocks into rows of 60 (60 seconds are in one minute = one row equals one minute of screen time for Clerks.) The resulting miasma of nicely arranged colored blocks is interesting to look at, but I can’t help but wonder if this kind of exercise would work better if you wanted to graph out the intensity and frequency of an action film’s action sequences, or the number of times characters embrace or kiss or emote their feelings for each other in a romance film.

Kevin Smith unveils new American version of Zack and Miri poster

Friday, September 12, 2008

They wanted it so Kevin Smith is gving it to them. After the MPAA’s puritanical furor over what this writer believes to be a harmless site gag used in the first iteration of the poster for Zack and Miri Make a Porno Smith’s crack advertsing team had to scramble to come up with a new and less “offensive” poster to promote the has released a new poster for mass consumption. Smith released the new poster this morning on his blog.

See the new poster after the jump:

Zack and Miri new poster

No doubt someone (like the MPAA) will be offended by this one too, but for all the wrong reasons. And ones they can’t justify banning the poster for.

But, wait! Isn’t there a dirty word hiding inside ‘titillating’? Uh oh, you’re in Dutch again Kevin Smith.

MPAA bans Zack and Miri Make a Porno Poster

Friday, September 05, 2008

Oh no! Did I read that title correctly? Kevin Smith must have really made a boo boo with his poster for the upcoming Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Goodness gracious what the heck can be so bad? Kevin Smith has already had issues with the MPAA around the rating for this film and won an appeal to reduce the rating from NC-17 to Restricted. This must really be horrific.

The offending poster after the jump (believe me I’m protecting you):

Huh? I don’t get it. I see two people each with two other very short individuals standing in front of them. What’s so offensive about that? Absolutely nothing. This is an ‘if you get it you get it’ gag and I don’t see how this is offensive to anybody or perverse in any way at all. Perhaps the real perverts are the ones making the judgement that this is perverted. I’m not sure about that I’m just sayin’.

People in the Great White North will be able to view the poster as is. “I’ve always loved Canada and Canadians for giving us hockey,” says Smith. “Now, I love ‘em just a little bit more. For allowing tufts of
hair.”

Oh, Canada! And I don’t mean that in a sexual way.

Kevin Smith f%$#ing loves Watchmen

Friday, August 15, 2008

Kevin Smith has seen Watchmen and apparently he likes it - a lot. At least that’s what I gather from his review:

I saw “Watchmen.” It’s f***ing astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off.

Remember that feeling of watching “Sin City” on the big screen and
being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material
it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you’ll
come close to watching “Watchmen.” Even Alan Moore might be surprised
at how close the movie is to the book. March can’t come soon enough. [source silentbobspeaks.com]

Even though Smith has been called a comic book movie fanboy he hasn’t let me down yet. We’ll take this early review as an even bigger reason to see the film. Personally, I have yet to read the graphic novel, something I’m shamed continuously about by Patrick. So much so I begged my wife for a copy for my birthday a few weeks ago. She got it for me, I just haven’t read it yet. Here’s a picture I just took of it with my handy dandy iPhone:

Perhaps I’ll put down the World of Warcraft and pick up the book this weekend…  Oh my God, I’m a nerd.
