Zombies are common now in cinema. They are the most overused movie monsters, and they are becoming difficult to reinvent in possible ways. Slow moving zombies have now evolved into running undead, but they still have one simple task: feasting on flesh. “28 Days Later” seemed to reinvent the genre, while “Shaun of the Dead” became the cornerstone of zombie comedy. This weekend “Zombieland” infuses those two styles into a fun romp through a country overcome by zombies.

Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg from “Adventureland”) narrates this adventure across the United States of Zombieland. Very few humans are left alive after an infection created a nation of zombies. He manages to survive by following a list of rules that pop up on screen at various times. He meets up with a cowboy named Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), and they begin a trek across the country to find a Twinkie. Along the way they run across a few more survivors, Wichita and Little Rock played by the lovely Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin respectively. This ragtag band of survivors road trip to California to seek out a place untouched by the apocalypse: Pacific Playland. Their journey brings them together and helps Columbus grow comfortable with himself.

The characters are somewhat stock in nature. Eisenberg’s Columbus is very similar to the characters that Michael Cera plays in film and television. He is that geek sort of guy who still is capable in tight situations. It is a tired characterization and is completely overdone. However the character works well with Harrelson’s, who pretty much plays the ultimate badass. He lives for killing zombies and not too much else. His obscenities are some of the most hysterical moments of the year, including my new favorite insult, which is too vulgar to write in this publication. A deep-rooted pain in Tallahassee drives him to shut everyone out of his life, and Columbus has to force himself onto him basically. Ultimately though, Tallahassee is a Han Solo-esque character who has a good heart behind the stone face.

The best character in the film is… well you have to see it because I won’t spoil this extended cameo. All I can say is that the role is brilliantly self-aware, but way too short lived.

The style of the film drops jaws. The opening titles are slow motion with zombies and humans crashing though title cards. It quickly establishes how ridiculous the movie can be as well as the great font effects that will follow. The film itself has a washed out look, with minimal vibrancy. The climactic set piece at an amusement park brings color back into the film to represent an escape from the doom and gloom of zombies, even thought it brings a hoard of attacking zombies. It is shot digitally, but it really doesn’t matter because in no way will it cause the backlash that it did this summer in “Public Enemies.”

“Zombieland” thrives on pop culture references, almost as much as Quentin Tarantino. “Shaun of the Dead” obviously inspires the film, and the director is on record having confirmed this. A lot of the film also harkens to “Little Miss Sunshine” with the same actress co-staring and a big yellow vehicle transporting the crew across the country. Also a road trip that bonds a group together is a common theme among the films. There is an incredible cameo that steals the show.

The comedy here is slick and witty. On the other hand it is laced with expletives to earn half of its R-rating. The other half of the R goes to the bloody zombie massacre that fills the screen. Blood splatters, brutal violence, and guts galore give this film a solid ‘R.’ It is not a horror though. It has horror elements but it always remains light hearted, giving it a horror comedy genre placement rather than a funny horror. If for nothing else, check out “Zombieland” for its pure entertainment value. It offers the most fun you can have in theaters this weekend, and tons of quotable lines that may soon make their place in pop culture.

You never know what you’re going to get at the Toronto International Film Festival, just that you’re gonna have to pay for it. I bought my tickets like a month before they had even published the list of films playing – I and a bazillion (down, it seems, from the gajillions of previous non-economic-downturn years) other folks like movies just that freakin’ much – and will gladly do so again next year. For some reason.

As you’ve seen here on movieset.com, thesubstream crashed as best we could the Midnight Madness section of TIFF this year, making little documentaries about what we think is the best movie-going experience around, reviewing 10 of the weirdest, scariest genre flicks made this year, helping people navigate the byzantine ticket-buying processes and talking to people from all over North America that take their vacation time (!!) to come to Toronto and watch movies at 9 in the morning.

Of the midnight madness films, we loved, loved loved two: The Loved Ones from Australia and Hitoshi Matsumoto’s Symbol. Both were spectacular, and both are gonna be worth tracking down over the next year.

We were also kind of impressed, if that’s a way to say it, by Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers. He warned us in the preamble, telling us “This movie is called trash humpers and it’s about people that hump trash. If you’re the kind of person that walks out of movies, please walk out now because you won’t like it.”

Nobody did. The movie rolled, three wizened old looking terrifying mutants humped trash – bins, bags, piles, dumpsters – and within 20 minutes 20 people had walked out. We laughed our asses off. That’s what makes TIFF work. Note: Don’t rent Trash Humpers if you don’t think you’d like watching people hump trash.

We saw 33 is I think the total, a schedule that literally in one case led to a visit to the emergency room (one substream dude’s eye swelled itself shut in mute protest). We don’t know how we could have done more, but we know that there are folks that blew us out of the water. We met a man from Calgary who saw 50 and had his schedule printed out on a giant-sized spreadsheet that he had to print out on a special printer. We met Matthew Price from rowthree.com, who claimed and maintained that he saw 60 which… well, we didn’t see his spreadsheet, so we can’t confirm. But not even one of his eyes was swollen shut, which makes us suspicious.

People squirmed in Antichrist, people laughed politely and felt kinda disappointed about Todd Solondz’s Life During Wartime, and the word around the volunteer ranks was that Oprah isn’t very nice, even though everybody liked her movie. The Road depressed people. Youth in Revolt cheered them up. It felt like bootcamp that somehow makes you fatter, that you paid for. That we’ll all pay for gladly again next year. See you there!

I remember when I had Kegs delivered to early to my house, my Dad just kept them so I still had to pay and he drank’em… well played Pops.

Would John Bender really show up to detention (especially on Saturday!) Ahh, but he did and so did the jock, nerd, princess and recluse. We could identify with each character, we spoke the same language and that is why John Hughes owned the 80s! Plus “Don’t You” by Simple Minds at the end…(I’m typing with my left hand ’cause my fist is in the air)

You don’t just fall out of love…ok…I mean if Phoebe Cates slipped her red bikini off in Breakfast Club it would be number one, but she didn’t, so it isn’t! This movie affected males in many ways, I for one became very interested in girls who liked eating carrots, which led me to persue a career in whoreticulture briefly as an adult.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen - The trailers didn’t look too promising. The gigantic billboards hanging all over town? Even less so.

What I’d Heard – The second prehistoric comedy of the summer. Of the two, my prediction was that Land of the Lost would be the one to see. But considering what a letdown the Ferrell comedy turned out to be, perhaps Year One could turn out to be a diamond in the rough.

What I Wanted – Look, we aren’t talking high art here. If this one makes me laugh and does it with some level of consistency, then it counts as a success.

EXPERIENCE

What Turned Me On – Year One stumbles out of the gate with a heavy dose of schticky humor that offers little promise of what’s to come. The danger of a one-note Saturday Night Live joke lasting 90 minutes appeared to be a distinct possibility. But then, something happened. A funny joke here, a minor laugh there, a clever little knock at a historical moment over there… Soon, we were off and running. The laughs aren’t big knee-slappers, but they are peppered throughout and occur often enough for an enjoyable experience.

Michael Cera’s unique brand of low energy humor offers many of Year One’s funniest moments. Jack Black is doing his usual thing; funny at points, but without Cera, Black offers nothing more than a retread of the dreadful Nacho Libre. Black’s humor works in doses when it’s part of an ensemble. In addition to Cera, David Cross and Oliver Platt lend memorable goofy supporting characters that compete nose for nose with the leads for laughs. Pay attention for an endless list of cameo appearances including, to name just a few, Ramis, Paul Rudd and Bill Hader.

What Turned Me Off - Well, as I mentioned above, Jack Black’s schtick is wearing thin these days, but when he isn’t the center attention, his brand of smarmy humor can illicit a few laughs and avoid being too grating. Year One is at its weakest when it goes for the most obvious jokes, but as the humor branches out and gets weirder, the laughs work regardless of high concept plot devices. At one point Cera must give a bare-chested Platt an oil rubdown, a cringe-inducing moment in any setting. As with any comedy of this nature, there are a few clunkers, but overall there are more hits than misses.

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking – Michael Cera can do no wrong. Either he picks good material or he elevates even the mediocre stuff. Either way, he’s well on his way to being a big comedy star.

I Left Saying – Who knew this would be the best prehistoric comedy I’d see this summer? In all seriousness, I went in expecting very little and received a present surprise. There aren’t any huge laughs, but there’s plenty of entertainment value to recommend this one for some silly summer popcorn-munching fun.

Expiry Date - Don’t go in expecting a comedy masterpiece or anything, but Year One is consistently funny and charmingly silly. While it falls short of The Hangover’s rapid-fire assault, it’s pure, unapologetic, dumb fun. And, you heard it here first: Year One is the best prehistoric comedy of 2009.

THE HANGOVER. Starring Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper. From the director of “Old School” comes a new comedy about a bachelor party gone horribly wrong. Two days before his wedding, Doug and his three buddies drive to Vegas for a blow-out night they’ll never forget. But when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning with pounding headaches, they can’t remember a thing. Their posh hotel suite is beyond trashed and the groom is nowhere to be found. With no clue of what happened and little time to spare, the trio must attempt to retrace their bad decisions from the night before in order to figure out where things went wrong and hopefully get Doug back to L.A. in time for his wedding. However, the more they begin to uncover, the more they realize just how much trouble they’re really in. This film has been rated R for pervasive language, sexual content including nudity, and some drug material.

AWAY WE GO. Directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”) from an original screenplay by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, this funny and heartfelt film follows the journey of an expectant couple (John Krasinski [“The Office’] and Maya Rudolph [“Saturday Night Live’]), as they travel the U.S. in search of the perfect place to put down roots and raise their family. Along the way, they have misadventures and find fresh connections with an assortment of relatives and old friends who just might help them discover “home” on their own terms for the first time. The movie features the music of Alexi Murdoch.

When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world in Columbia Pictures’ comedy Year One. Harold Ramis directs. The screenplay is by Harold Ramis & Gene Stupnitsky & Lee Eisenberg (“The Office”) from a story by Harold Ramis. The film is produced by Judd Apatow, Harold Ramis, and Clayton Townsend.

If you like Zach’s style (and dead ferns), consider watching the episode with Natalie Portman or Michael Cera (though two these are semi-NSFW).

What is it? A group of buddies embark on a night of wild debauchery at their friend’s bachelor party in Sin City. When they wake up, the groomsmen’s gone and they have a baby and a tiger in their room.

Who’s in it? Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Zach Galifianakis, Heather Graham and Mike Tyson

Why it just might be the best movie ever: It’s from the guy that directed Old School (Todd Phillips) and the trailer is terrific.

Why it just might be the worst movie ever: Phillips’ last two movies have been so-so and then there’s always the worry that they gave away all the big laughs in the trailer.

The reality: This one looks promising. Phillips is finally getting back to his routes and returning to the beloved overgrown fratboy comedy genre.

Land of the Lost

What is it? Based on the cult ‘70s TV series, Will Ferrell stars as a washed up scientist who gets sent back in time to the age of dinosaurs.

The reality: This one could really go either way. Its a send-up of a show that was unintentionally popular with stoners, so it might be tricky to score with the munchie audience and the mainstream.

What is it? A remake of the 1974 film about a group of hijackers that take control of a New York subway train and demand a million-dollar ransom.

Who’s in it? Denzel Washington, John Travolta, James Gandolfini, Luis Guzman, John Turturro

Why it just might be the best movie ever: Tony Scott is the man that directed Top Gun, True Romance and Man on Fire.

Why it just might be the worst movie ever: Tony Scott is the man that directed The Fan, Spy Game and Domino.

The reality: This type of movie is right up director Tony Scott’s ally. If Travolta can keep up with Washington, it should be exciting summer fun.

The reality: There was a time when I kept holding out for the time that Eddie Murphy would start making good movies again. Dreamgirls gave me hope, then he followed with Norbit and Meet Dave. Fool me once, Eddie Murphy…

What is it? A boss forces her younger assistant to marry her so she can stay in the U.S.

Who’s in it? Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Malin Ackerman

Why it just might be the best movie ever: Ryan Reynolds plus Sandra Bullock might just equal rom-com gold.

Why it just might be the worst movie ever: Reynolds is 32. Bullock is 44. Ewww.

The reality: Another piece of counter-programming in a summer filled with superheroes and giant robots. Men have to make the trade-off every now and then, but this one should be harmlessly cute enough.

What is it? Not to be confused with Land of the Lost, this prehistoric comedy comes from the man who did Caddyshack and Groundhog Day.

Who’s in it? Jack Black, Michael Cera, David Cross, Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria

Why it just might be the best movie ever: Michael Cera and Jack Black should make for an effective odd couple and seems to pull a winner out of his hat every now and then.

Why it just might be the worst movie ever: Ramis has been a very spotty director over the years and the plot setup sounds a little hokey.

The reality: Should have a few laughs but classic comedy status looks like a long shot.

My Sister’s Keeper

What is it? A daughter seeks medical emancipation from her parents, who have placed the burden of their leukemia-stricken daughter on her.

Who’s in it? Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, Jason Patric, Alec Baldwin

Why it just might be the best movie ever: Nick Cassavetes is growing as a director and, though this one sounds very heavy-handed, it promises some strong performances and a few tears.

Why it just might be the worst movie ever: As one of the youngest members of the cast, Abigail Breslin may also have the top acting chops. Diaz and Priestley are hit-and-miss at times.

The reality: Cassavetes continues to flex his chops and may not have hit his stride just yet. Could be an early Oscar contender in 2009.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

What is it? The sequel to the blockbuster 2007 film about giant robots that can transform into vehicles and their invasion of Earth.

Who’s in it? Shia LeBeouf, Megan Fox, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Hugo Weaving, Rainn Wilson

Why it just might be the best movie ever: Giant robots smashing stuff in the middle of summer can never be a bad thing. Also, tripod-assisted camera shots maybe? Fingers crossed!

Why it just might be the worst movie ever: The first film was overrated, to say the least. Bay tends to lean to heavily towards showy camera work and schmaltzy comic relief.

The reality: Probably the same result as the first film and most any Michael Bay project: Fun and forgettable.
