Directed by Lee Daniels, Precious tells the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones, an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child.  Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, unloved and generally unnoticed until the attention of a devoted teacher helps her begin to turn her life around.

Up in the Air

Directed by Jason Reitman, Up in the Air takes a look at the life of Ryan Bingham, a frequent flyer and corporate downsizing expert whose job is to fire people from theirs. The anguish, hostility, and despair of his “clients” has left him falsely compassionate, living out of a suitcase, and loving every second of it. When his boss hires arrogant young Natalie, she develops a method of video conferencing that will allow termination without ever leaving the office – essentially threatening the existence Ryan so cherishes. Determined to show the naive girl the error of her logic, Ryan takes her on one of his cross country firing expeditions, but as she starts to realize the disheartening realities of her profession, he begins to see the downfalls to his way of life.

Directed by Todd Phillips, The Hangover proves that some guys just can’t handle Vegas. After a bachelor party gone wrong, three groomsmen lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him.

It’s Complicated

Directed by Nancy Meyers, It’s Complicated tells the complicated story of divorced… with benefits. Jane is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has—after a decade of divorce—an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake. But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable—an affair. With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness, Jane is now, of all things, the other woman.

Playing a stripper and a prostitute/escort in the Movie: The Hangover and living in Sin City has led beautiful blonde Hollywood actress Heather Graham to feel like she’s ready for motherhood.

But acting as a mother has made her feel for the first time that she may be ready to have a family. “I’ve been thinking about it lately,” she told an Australian newspaper.

“I’m not at the stage where I’m saying: ‘Today I want one.’ But to be a mother sounds more fun to me than it did before. I don’t know how some people have kids when they’re 20 because it seems like a lot to take on. But finally now, I feel like I’m ready.”

What Turned Me On – The Hangover doesn’t wait very long before kicking the comedy into high gear. After an opening scene in which a bloodied Bradley Cooper stands on the desert roadside informing the bride via cell phone that the groom is, in fact, missing, we’re off and running.

What follows is a brutally relentless comedy assault with so many laughs that you might need to see it again just to hear the lines you missed when the audience was laughing so loudly.

What Turned Me Off – Hmm, big laughs, tigers, Heather Graham breast-feeding, naked Asian man beating the boys with a tire iron, Mike Tyson singing Phil Collins… I’m trying, but I’m not finding much to dislike here.

Graham had to handle acting like she was breast-feeding the baby, a difficult task for any actress. “You know, it takes a lot of practice. I had to start lactating,” joked Graham. “I’m a method actor. The baby was teething so the AD said, ‘Be careful because the baby is teething and I can’t promise that he’s not going to try and bite you.’ But, luckily, he didn’t.”

Graham recalled the day they actually filmed the breast-feeding scene as being an extremely long day on the set. “I think it was like a 17-hour day, because obviously the baby is not really breast-feeding, so the babies keep looking around, and they start looking at Zach [Galifianakis], looking at Bradley [Cooper] and so they were like, ‘It doesn’t look like he’s breast-feeding now because his head’s moving.’ So we had to keep his head facing down towards my boobs. So someone had to stand behind me with a rattler, going, ‘Chee, chee, chee.’ And then it was just like it had no…at the end of the day, it kind of felt like it didn’t matter what I was doing as long as the baby’s head – it was all about where the babies head was looking.”

But Graham says that despite everything, the moms were really into it. “They were like, ‘Can you take a picture of my baby? I want a picture of you.”

Graham is dating Yaniv Raz, 32, a director she worked with on the movie Son of Mourning. “We’ve just planted a garden together, too, so I think that is really romantic,” she comments.

EXPECTATIONS

What I’d Seen – There have been so many trailers and clips for this one floating around for so long, my main worry going in was that I’d already seen all the funny parts.

What I’d Heard - Buzz started building on this one early. I tried my best to avoid early word as much as possible since I knew this was high on my summer must-see list. Even so, as a big fan of Phillips’ sophomoric masterpiece, Old School, my hopes were high.

What I Wanted – The same high level of rapid-fire comedy Phillips has delivered in the past (we’ll give him a pass on the mediocre Starsky and Hutch).

EXPERIENCE

AFTERMATH

I Left Thinking - Time will tell where this one falls on the comedy scale, but my initial impression is that this has a chance at classic status. I was pretty tired when I saw it and it still had me laughing throughout. I’m looking forward to a second viewing.

I Left Saying – For all the great bits they gave away in the endless WB marketing campaign leading up to this week’s release, there’s still loads of great material they managed to hide from audiences. See this one before your idiot coworkers ruin it for you at the water cooler.

Expiry Date - Lack of star power is about the only obstacle in The Hangover’s path. If you’re debating between this one and Land of the Lost, stop right now. Even Will Ferrell and dinosaurs can’t compete with this comic mastery. The Hangover should have strong box office and a long shelf-life as a party favorite for years to come.
