Tintin movie gets Frost and Pegged
Tuesday, January 06, 2009

After breaking out as best buddies* in the romantic comedy/horror film Shaun of the Dead, and then pairing up again as a pair of coppers in Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will reunite again on the big screen in the forthcoming Tintin movies. The deal has been confirmed by Variety via Pegg’s agent after first breaking online on Ain’t It Cool News.
The duo will be playing the Thompson Twins. No, for those of us that grew up in the ’80s that doesn’t mean they will be singing “Doctor Doctor”; as fans of the Tintin comics know the characters in question are two nearly identical gentlemen named Thompson and Thomson and the only way to tell the difference between them is by the subtle difference of their mustaches. Guillermo Del Toro solo directing The Hobbit
Thursday, October 09, 2008

As mentioned before here at MovieSet, Guillermo del Toro (seen left), director of Pan’s Labyrinth, is currently writing the screenplay for the film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s, The Hobbit, with Lord of the Rings helmer Peter Jackson.
However it appears as though directing duties will be the solo responsibility of directing duties will go to del Toro alone leaving Jackson out of it.
“We talked about it. I normally oppose fully the idea of second unit so
my first instinct is no, we will not have second unit on this film,”
Del Toro said. “If there is a scheduling conflict or a problem of that
sort, we may consider it, but right now the idea is I shoot everything.” [source MTV]
Although the idea of dual directors is somewhat in vogue with the Coen Brothers recent popularity and Oscar win for No Country for Old Men, it doesn’t always work and becomes messily schizophrenic. Take for example the cinematic poop known as The Matrix sequels by the Wachowski Brothers although they did well at the box office they weren’t great films.
It’s nice to seen that singularity of vision rules the day rather than pandering to Peter Jackson fans who haven’t a clue about decent film making.

EXCLUSIVE: Guillermo Navarro on The Hobbit
Thursday, October 02, 2008

Left to Right: Mike Browne, Guillermo Navarro and Patrick Sauriol [photo by Quinn Bender]
Last weekend at the Vancouver International Film Festival’s New Filmmaker Day, Quinn, Patrick and myself sat down with well known and award winning director of photography, Guillermo Navarro, for a video interview. We found Navarro, who won an Oscar (and many other awards) for the other Guillermo’s (del Toro) film, Pan’s Labyrinth, to be open and wonderfully candid about all we questioned him on.
After the READ MORE link is a 13 second teaser video of Navarro speaking about his possible involvement in the upcoming Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro telling of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic, The Hobbit:
It’s just a tiny taste, but later today we’ll see some more nicely edited video footage of Guillermo Navarro talking about shooting the recent Hellboy 2 as well as other exclusive information about the man and his storied career.

Don’t worry, Steven Spielberg says he’s still directing the first Tintin movie
Wednesday, August 27, 2008
This bit of news either shows you one of two things: the weight that Steven Spielberg name carries whenever it’s bandied about with a future film project or how slow the last week of August is for hard movie news. I’m leaning towards the second explanation.
Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter published a short piece about how things supposedly changed for the live-action Tintin movies that Spielberg and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson are putting together. The duo want to make a trilogy of Tintin flicks. So what’s the big deal, right? Well, up until the Reporter piece ran it was assumed that Spielberg would direct #1, Jackson #2 and a to-be-named person would call the shots for #3. Reporter said that there had been a shake-up and Jackson would now be directing the first Tintin film. This threw the movie website world for a loop and overnight a couple of dozen stories were published about the news, with some more opinionated webmasters speculating whether this meant Spielberg had changed his mind about the project.
This forced the hand of Spielberg who then had to correct the Reporter mistake and revocalize his commitment to directing Tintin movie #1 (Jackson is still slated to direct #2 after he finishes up working on The Lovely Bones.) In other words it was a non-story. Now the film blogosphere are running companion pieces saying that it was all a false alarm.
Like I said, this thing either shows you how heavy a guy like Spielberg is to film or how utterly banal the breaking news is coming out of Hollywood right now. And here I was wondering if it would be silly to do a fluffy top 10 list about who were the hottest female characters from the summer of ‘08…

Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro writing The Hobbit
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro are writing The Hobbit themselves. My twisted little brain immediately went here:

Although I know the comparison has been made numerous times it’s far too funny not to repeat. At least Jackson’s no longer, as the great Smeagol says, “The fat one…”.
I can’t help myself I really do like these two and am pulling for this movie. I liked The Hobbit far more than J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy if only for it’s brevity. I mean how much walking do a bunch of hairy midgets have to do before it stops being interesting?
