Spider-Man 4 a done deal for Tobey and Sam?
Friday, September 05, 2008
According to the illustrious Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood Daily, Columbia Pictures has closed a deal that would see Spider-Man director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire come back to make Spider-Man 4. I have no idea how many dumptrucks of money the studio must have used to entice the twosome back for a fourth round of superheroics but it has to be a lot. Let’s hope that the script for number 4 (written by Zodiac screenwriter James Vanderbilt) is a lot better than the fragmentary mess that was Spider-Man 3.
Finke also adds that Columbia/Sony wants to make Spider-Man 4 back-to-back with Spider-Man 5 since it’s now a logistical nightmare to coordinate getting these projects assembled so why not do two of them at the same time? Finke’s insider also mentions that when you hear the name of the actor that the producers want for the Spider-Man 4 villain you’ll know what comic book character he or she isĀ supposed to be playing. So let me take a stab at this guessing game by naming some hot actors and linking them to what I think would be their Marvel Comics shoe-in role:
If it’s 300 star Gerard Butler: Kraven the Hunter.
If it’s Transporter action hero Jason Statham: the Vulture.
If it’s Babylon AD heavyweight Vin Diesel: the Rhino.
If it’s Pirates of the Caribbean guy Johnny Depp: Morbius.
If it’s Fast and Furious surfer dude Paul Walker: Electro.
Those are my choices (well, Mike Browne dreamed up the Depp as Morbius one and that’s tiiight.)

For sale: a role in Spider-Man 4
Thursday, August 28, 2008

I`m all for charities getting money but this auction that Mike Browne told me about kinda weirds me out. It looks like Sony Pictures has agreed to auction off a chance to appear in Spider-Man 4. Out there, somewhere, there`s a movie fan with enough disposable cash who can submit a minimum bid of $5,000 to get in the running for this event. The lucky winner will also have the opportunity to have lunch with the cast of the film and attend the premiere wearing some nice duds (that they even get to keep.) The really nutty thing about this auction is that Sony doesn`t even know who`s going to star in Spider-Man 4, which means that whomever wins this auction may in fact be the first confirmed cast member of SM4. Go figure.
The money raised goes to an organization called Stand Up to Cancer, which sounds like a good cause to me. There`s a mess of rules that the winner has to meet including being of legal age and a promise to not take photos of the SM4 cast when you lunch with them (but bringing your digital camera to the set is cool just as long as you`re not taking photographs of spoiler-ish stuff.) You`ve got until 7 PM on September 4th to get your bids in, which at the moment are up to $5K. If you`re a big enough fan of Spider-Man my advice would be to start rolling your spare change.

Tom Cruise could be a “Sleeper”
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
The man who runs United Artists and who remains one of the world’s biggest box office draws may finally be starring in his own superhero film. Tom Cruise is interested in possibly starring in Sleeper, an adaptation of a harder-edge comic book series of the same title published by DC Comics/Wildstorm. As you may or may not recall, at one point Tom was interested in playing Iron Man, years back and well before Robert Downey Jr. got involved. Perhaps the $300 million dollar domestic take of the Marvel superhero movie got Mr. Cruise to reconsider making a superhero movie?
Sleeper, which is presently not published by DC Comics, was about a secret operative who got exposed to an alien artifact which rendered him invulnerable to pain. Such a talent proved to be handy for the agency that the character works for, enabling him to perform feats of extreme hardship that other agents couldn’t do. Personally, while it sounds like a cool idea for a comic I can’t see this having the same legs as an Iron Man franchise would have. Even with Spider-Man director Sam Raimi also behind this new project, I don’t see it being a super hit in Tom’s future.
