Like it or not, the remake of the classic slasher horror film Friday the 13th is making it’s way to screens on Friday February 13th, 2009.
In case you have forgotten, the plot of the film, produced by Michael Bay and directed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake helmer, Marcus Nispel, is “a group of young adults discover a boarded up Camp Crystal Lake, where they soon encounter Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions.” [source IMDb]
Ahead of the film comes a trailer (you can view in HD via Yahoo!) and a poster that you can look at with screenshots from the trailer after the jump.

Hollywood is remaking the 80s
Thursday, December 04, 2008

In 1981 there was a little comedy starring Dudley Moore as an alcoholic playboy who’s forced to make the choice between love or money when he falls for a working class girl to the disapproval of his snobbish family. Moore was nominated for an Oscar and Christopher Cross’s sappy tune, “The Best That You Can Do,” actually won for best original song.

According to an article on THR, that starts off with lame pun that made me wretch, Russell Brand is developing the project for an update:
Russell Brand might soon be caught between the moon and New York City.
The British comedian is developing a remake of “Arthur,” the 1981 comedy that starred Dudley Moore, for Warner Bros. as a potential starring vehicle.
Brand is meeting with scribes to write the screenplay, which will be produced by MBST’s Larry Brezner, whose credits range from “Good Morning, Vietnam” to HBO’s recent “Little Britain USA.” [more at source]

Old Boy remake to Dreamworks
Wednesday, November 19, 2008

According to THR Mandate has bought the rights to popular Korean cult hit Old Boy co-written and directed by Park Chan-wook from Universal, who had acquired the rights in 2004 with Vertigo Entertainment. And round and round we go.
Old Boy is “the story of Dae-Su who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing his captor’s motives. When he is finally released, Dae Su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracy and strangeness. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls for an attractive sushi chef.” [wikipedia]
All of the usual ingredients are falling into place to make Old Boy another big budget, cookie cutter offering from Hollywood:
- The rights to a successful foreign film ripe for remaking, with a built in fan base, have been procured
- Dreamworks is involved
- Mark Protosevich who wrote I am Legend, Poseidon and The Cell is in talks to write the screenplay
- Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are developing the project
It is a formula that works. Doesn’t mean a great film. Financially successful? Yep.

Friday the 13th trailer online
Thursday, October 23, 2008
The trailer for this Friday the 13th remake looks like fun. I’m not sure how I feel about fast Jason though. His slow but relentless pace in the older films is part of what made him as scary as he was. I do realize that Jason ran in a couple of the those movies, but that doesn’t mean I have to like that fact.

Poltergeist to be remade but why?
Tuesday, August 19, 2008

The business of making movies sometimes makes me ask, “why” This time the why comes in the form of a film I like a lot, just as it is, being… you guessed it - REMADE.
This time it’s Poltergeist according to The Hollywood Reporter. The reason I’m asking why is that this film originally done in 1982, directed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre helmer Tobe Hooper and produced and co-written by none other than Steven Spielberg, still plays very well today. That’s the typical argument from producers, they want to update the story for today’s audiences.
I understand the agument. A business idea worked once so repeating it just makes sense. Of course we all want to make money. Here’s an idea, and Patrick might punch me in theback of the head for this reference but why not just update and re-release the existing film like George Lucas did with Star Wars IV to VI. I’m not saying add anything drastic, just remaster it, clean it up. Not only would you get the teens going to it, but people like myself who loved this when it first came out would go and see it again.
There are certain movies that shouldn’t be remade. This is pretty close to one of them. Have a look at the original trailer and see what you think:
Still works for me. Perhaps the producers and writers who are in on this one need a visit from Tobe Hooper’s Leatherface, another character who was poorly remade and I’m sure, in some other dimension, is pissed off about it.
