Jason Bourne Matt Damon

Variety makes note of videogame titan Electronic Arts signing a deal with the estate of Bourne creator Robert Ludlum to make games based on his spy books. Ludlum passed away in 2001 but thanks to the tremendous box office success of Universal’s Bourne films, the author has never been hotter — or more attractive — to entertainment companies. Jason Bourne

It didn’t come as any surprise to me when word crept out from Universal that the studio has signed Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass to do another Jason Bourne movie. The existing trilogy of Bourne-mania — The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum — have earned $525 million dollars at the box office domestically and have also been loved by movie critics. Canadian auteur David Cronenberg is talking with his agent today over whether the contract from MGM to direct The Matarese Circle is sweet enough to sign. Variety reported that the Eastern Promises filmmaker was in talks to make the picture for MGM. It’s based on a Robert Ludlum book, and after the writer’s cache went up big-time when the Bourne films hit big, now Ludlum’s other books are viable film properties.

While Cronenberg is in negotiations American Gangster leading guy Denzel Washington is attached to star in the film. Set during the Cold War, the book’s premise follows two men, an American and a Soviet, who discover the existence of a hidden cabal that pits world governments against each other. Yeah, it’s got elements of that whole Illuminati/NWO conspiracy vibe but that’s in these days. Ludlum was just ahead of the curve, yo? In any case, Washington is set to play one of these two days, if he’s still interested in playing ball after Cronenberg comes onboard (and I can’t see that as a reason why Denzel would ditch.) If Cronenberg does sign up I wonder if he could convince Viggo Mortensen to star opposite the Wash.
