First look at Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes

The first photos of Downey as Sherlock Holmes have gone up at Just Jared, one of the ‘net’s top spy photo sites. There’s a bunch of shots of Mr. Iron Man in his Victorian era duds including the one you see on the right showing Downey walking alongside the film’s director, Guy Ritchie. Jude Law plays Dr. John Watson, Holmes’ confidant, assistant and Robin to his Batman. Ritchie says that his version of Sherlock Holmes will feature more action and portray the detective in a more physical manner than earlier version which tended to only show the character’s massive intellect. At no point will Robert Downey Jr. get into a suit of iron and fly through the sky (or at least I think that’s the plan.)

Jude Law may be Sherlock Holmes’ Watson

A couple of months back Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s new film, but what’s a Sherlock Holmes movie without his trusted companion Watson along for the ride? And so the search has been on for finding a Dr. Watson to accompany Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth on the screen. After weeks of no word on the search now it looks like a prime candidate has emerged in the form of Jude Law. According to Variety, Law is negotiating to star alongside the Iron Man star in the drama. Warner Bros. wants filming on the project to commence next month.
There is one more major role to be filled for the movie and that’s the part of the villain whom Variety is calling Blackwood. I had heard that the bad guy was supposed to be Professor Moriarty, Holmes’ long-time adversary. Maybe that’s still the case and Blackwood is just an alias that Moriarty uses in the film. One name that has been thrown about for the villain part is that of Russell Crowe. That would certainly be a groovy choice and a guy that I’d like to see match wits against Downey.
