Rain of Madness mockumentary free at iTunes

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Some of the most creative marketing materials I’ve seen for film this year come from Paramount’s release Tropic Thunder starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black and a scene stealing Tom Cruise.

One of thethings I most wanted to see was the full version of the mockumentary Rain of Madness which up until now was only a teaser trailer. There was specualation that the trailer was all that existed. Not so. Today the entire mockumentary is available FOR FREE from iTunes.

Parodying the style and feel of Hearts of Darkness, the documentary chronicling Francis Ford Coppola’s descent into depression and near madness due to the extreme pressure he was under while making his epic film, Apocalypse Now, Rain of Madness follows the makers of the faux film inside Tropic Thunder as the attempt to get their movie made. The even created a website for the mock complete with links to sites of characters in Tropic Thunder. Nice!

Justin Theroux’s portrayal of the Herzog-esque German documentarian is worth the watch in itself.

If you want to more Tropic Thunder content check out the official MovieSet sitelet for the film.

Thanks to /Film for the heads up.

Compare and Contrast: the trailers for Tropic Thunder and Tunnel Rats

Wednesday, August 06, 2008

One’s a definite comedy, the other\s supposed to be a war drama. One’s directed by Ben Stiller, the other by Uwe Boll. Both use the war in Vietnam for their story purposes. Even with that shared story connection, why do the starts of the trailers for both of these wildly different films look the same? Is there really only just one song that gets used over and over again for any movie that’s set in Vietnam during the war?

Judge for yourself:

The trailer for Tropic Thunder versus the trailer for Tunnel Rats.

I guess that song is telling the truth, there really is something happening here, but what it is I’m not entirely clear.

Before the “Tropic Thunder” falls the “Rain of Madness”

Wednesday, July 09, 2008

Sure it’s still more than a month away from the release of Tropic Thunder but the people behind it have to find some way to overcome the tidal wave of hype for The Dark Knight. How better to combat the ever-present shadow of the Batman than releasing a viral video about a made-up making of documentary for the fictional movie that’s being made by the characters in Tropic Thunder. Confused? Read on to see what I’m talking about.

The make believe doc is titled “Rain of Darkness” and brilliantly spoofs the supposed intensity that the fictional filmmakers faced when shooting the world’s most expensive Vietnam war movie. That’s actor Justin Theroux you see as documentarian Jan Jürgen, Ben Stiller as the world’s biggest action star, Robert Downey Jr. as the Australian method actor who undergoes a skin pigmentation operation to authentically play a black soldier and Jack Black as the comedian actor looking to broaden his audience appeal by starring in a drama. The whole thing is so meta at this point all you need to do is just go with the flow, watch the video, and wait for Tropic Thunder to open in the middle of August.

The Dailies: Mamma Mia, What Just Happened to the Tropic Thunder?

Monday, July 07, 2008

Welcome to the second day of the workweek. We’re not even at hump day but the good news is that there is another decent movie trailer and two fun previews of other films to speak of. Today’s edition of “The Dailies” has arrived.

…IGN has an exclusive video clip from What Just Happened, the upcoming Robert De Niro comedy based on real-life movie producer Art Linson’s tell-all book of the same name. Speaking as a guy that’s read Linson’s tale of the horror making the Anthony Hopkins/Alec Baldwin flick The Edge, it’s kind of surreal seeing De Niro playing the producer of a fictional movie and Bruce Willis playing the part of the diva-esque movie star that won’t shave his beard. In Linson’s book he recounts the ordeal of having to face down an irate Baldwin day-in, day-out, and the account is just as comedic in its over-the-top quality as it is shocking. It’s just too bad that Alec couldn’t be convinced to play himself acting as a primadonna; Bruce Willis is too cool a cat and has always been not hung up on his ego so that it’s hard to buy him acting like a spoiled child in this clip from the movie.

…the British red band (meaning: filled with swear words and scenes of violence) for Ben Stiller’s comedy Tropic Thunder is online. Everything that I’ve seen so far for Tropic Thunder is great; love the concept, love the cast, love the stuff that I’ve seen in the trailers. Thankfully I think this is the Stiller we saw in Zoolander and not so much the one from Night at the Museum. Robert Downey Jr. is going to be the king of the summer after this movie hits screens in August and becomes an instant hit

….and do you wanna see Meryl Streep sing to Pierce Brosnan? It’s right here baby as well as other clips from the upcoming Mamma Mia! movie. I can’t quite believe it myself but after watching a couple of these I think that Streep is gonna pull the ABBA groove off.

That should keep you going for now.
