We’re just months away from the continuing onscreen adventures of Bella, Edward and Jacob. It seems like only yesterday Twilighters were wondering whether Stephanie Meyers’ bestselling series could make a viable transition from page to screen. Doubt in casting and even the choice of Catherine Hardwicke as director were debated to a pulp on message boards, Facebook groups, Twitterings and in school hallways across the nation. Would Twilight be as good as the book?

Thankfully, that was all laid to rest last November. Twilight was met with a welcome reception by fans, critics and laymen alike. Sure, there were some nitpicks, but all in all the Twilighters were happy. Kristen Stewart embodied Meyers’ description of the heroine Bella, Robert Pattinson proved to be more than just a pretty face and the supporting cast whetted fan’s appetites for adventures to come. Sure, we didn’t get to see much of Taylor Lautner as Jacob, but wasn’t he dreamy all the same?

Unfortunately, just after the release of Twilight, Summit made a mad dash to get New Moon into production before the heat could dissipate, leading to a swirl of rumors and mixed emotions. Soon director Catherine Hardwicke was off the project and key cast members were said to be less than thrilled by the decision.

Shortly thereafter, the announcement that Paul Weitz was taking over as director was met with more than a few raised eyebrows. Sure, he co-directed the smash comedy American Pie and also gave Hugh Grant his finest role to date in the touching About a Boy, but his only New Moon-level work was on the critically lambasted The Golden Compass, which was also a commercial flop.

And so, despite Twilight’s runaway success, New Moon finds itself in much the same boat as the first movie. Excitement for New Moon is still palpable, but now fans are unsure just what to expect.

Today we take a look at New Moon and offer a list of the positives and negatives. In the interest of impartiality, we’ve come up with an even number of reasons we think New Moon could live up to the hype and five reasons it might let everyone down.

Five Reasons New Moon Will Suck (Literally)

1.    Paul Weitz

As we mentioned above, the choice of Paul Weitz as director is a surprising one, especially after The Golden Compass. While Hardwicke’s past work showed a knack for teen angst and ensemble casts, Weitz’s resume doesn’t offer much to put a Twilighter’s mind at ease. New Moon is far more complicated than Twilight, both in terms of story and scope. And, whether Weitz possesses the necessary chops to pull it off remains the sequel’s biggest question mark.

2.    Summit is Rushing New Moon to Cash in

We’ve all heard this criticism and it’s hard to find a better explanation. Hardwicke was aware New Moon was a more complicated story and felt that, in terms of the effects work and the story elements, it would be better to spend more time in pre-production to assure it lived up to the first movie. And while fans are happy to have another Twilight film so soon, most would probably be willing to wait a little longer for a better movie.

3.    Unhappy Cast Equals Half-Hearted Performances

It’s no secret that the cast, particularly Stewart and Pattinson, were big fans of Harwicke and were outraged by her dismissal. Sure, they are professionals and this is a business, but will these young stars be able to open up as freely for another director?

4.    No Edward?

Yes, it’s true. Edward is not a huge part of New Moon. Instead, we learn a lot more about Jacob’s (Taylor Lautner) character and his issues with added hair growth. In all fairness, however, this point could be null and void since screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg’s script may well up the Edward quotient from the book.

5.    Rushed, Costly Effects

As any fan who’s read New Moon can attest, the budget must be substantially larger than Twilight. It’s just a bigger story with more characters and more complicated scenarios. The addition of werewolves and their transition effects means special effects are crucial. Sure, some fans were unhappy with the diamond skin effect in Twilight, but that’s nothing compared to bad werewolf CG work. If you don’t believe me, just watch Van Helsing.

Five Reasons New Moon Will Be Even Better than Twilight

1.    Experience

Twilight gave the cast its first dip into the deep pool of Stephanie Meyers’ detailed and complex character creations. With first time jitters now out of the way, cast members can dig deeper and round out the multifaceted characters from the books without first time jitters.

2.    Jacob rises to the surface

If you’re on Team Taylor, well then, this should be your movie. Lautner had limited screen time in Twilight, but if New Moon stays true to the book, this time out he and Bella are the stars of the show. We already know Lautner looks good, but now we get to see if he’s got the chops to match Edward fang-for-claw.

3.    Hardwicke Was Good, But How Good?

We’ve already established the fact that fans and critics were happy with Twilight, but let’s not gush too much. Twilight was well done and, for cynics such as myself, a welcome surprise. Still, it was well short of being a great movie and there’s plenty of room for improvement. Less slow-mo on Edward, for example. The legion of Harry Potter fans would certainly argue that the series has only improved with different directors at the helm; perhaps most noticeably in the transition from Chris Columbus to Alfonso Cuaron on the third movie. You never know, maybe the Twilight sequels will be even better than the first movie.

4.    Formalities Are Out of the Way

For fans of a series that already know the story ins and outs, listening to explanations like what a vegetarian vampire is, or what each member of the Cullen family’s special something is, can be a little tedious and repetitive. And while New Moon will offer some additional backstory information, particularly in terms of Jacob, the majority of origin talk is mercifully over and done with. Now we can get into the nitty gritty. Also, the honeymoon phase of Edward and Bella’s relationship was nice and all, but we can’t wait to see that kinky werewolf-vampire love triangle.

5.    New Moon is a Better Story

Fans will surely debate this point, but searching message board posts and lists around the net, a majority of fans make the case that New Moon is better than Twilight and quite possibly the strongest entry in the series. Rosenberg did wonders with Meyers’ material on the first movie, so we have strong hopes that her Moon adaptation will be similarly taut. After all, we can whine all day about directors, but story is always king.

Hold on to your fangs Twi-Hards,  MovieSet has a special edition Behind The Scenes Show all about The Twilight Saga and the movie New Moon.  It’s a three-part featurette where we take you on the MovieSet Vancouver Twilight Tour.

As you all already know, although it is not based in Vancouver, Canada, Twilight: New Moon was actually shot there, and there’s tons of companies offering tours around the set locations from the movie. So if you want to visit all the spots that Bella and Edward go in the movie then well… you can.  Unfortunately not everyone has the time or the money to fly to Vancouver and do the tour as it can be quite the expensive.

But here at  MovieSet we hate to see any Twi-Hard stay home without at least getting a TASTE of what the REAL Twilight fans are getting. *cough*

So for those of you who really, really, REALLY wish you could go, take the time to check out this awesome behind the scenes footage of the Twilight Saga: New Moon Vancouver Tour, brought to you exclusively by MovieSet.

In case you found this page through some sort of cosmic anomaly and don’t actually know what Twilight: New Moon is (yeah right) … its the sequel to Twilight and the 2nd movie in a series of 3 referred to as The Twilight Saga.

In this movie after Bella (Kristen Stewart)  recovers from the vampire attack that almost claimed her life, she looks to celebrate her birthday with Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and his family. However, a minor accident during the festivities results in Bella’s blood being shed, a sight that proves too intense for the Cullens, who decide to leave the town of Forks, Washington (its not actually shot in Forks Washington, so watch the show) for Bella and Edward’s sake. Initially heartbroken, Bella finds a form of comfort in reckless living, as well as an even-closer friendship with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Danger in different forms awaits.

The movie also has Ashley Green as Alice Cullen, Jackson Rathbone as Jasper Hale, Nikki Reed as Rosalie Hale and Kellen Lutz as Emmet Cullen.

On Monday night, guests at the Westin Bayshore Hotel got a chance to take part in Film Making history when one of the films scenes (Percy Jackson) was shot outside its entrance. The hotel was temporarily transformed into a Vegas casino complete with palm trees and hundreds of blinking lights.

“Percy Jackson” a comedy about Greek gods that is schedule to film here until the beginning of August. The film stars Pierce Brosnan, Uma Thurman, Rosario Dawson and also features Catherine Keener and Melina Kanakaraedes from TV’s providence.

Also currently filming in town is long awaited “HOT TUB TIME MACHINE”, a humorous tale about a group of drinking buddies who go back in time with the use of the Hot Tub, to a time when they were younger. The film features John Cusack and Chevy Chase.

Where TV is concerned the Fringe is coming into town to shoot its second season in the next few weeks, bringing along with it leading actor Joshua Jackson. The popular CW show supernatural is returning to film its upcoming season as well and its very talented lead actors, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, are sure to set some Vancouver hearths aflutter.

As if that’s not enough, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are coming back in august to shoot the third installment of the Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Mortals and Immortals alike love nothing more than another chance to passionately voice their opinions regarding everything and anything to do with Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga. Well, here is another debate to sink your fangs into. Which film do you believe is going to rake in more cold hard cash at the Box Office?

I see that Larson Hill over at the deadbolt is looking seriously into this question and whether online chatter always equals Box Office success?  I have a feeling that come November the frenzied anticipation for this sequel will attract fans disposable income quicker than tweens hearts flutter at the sight of Robert Pattinson.

Other big franchises have had sequels fall short?

Although nothing is ever a guarantee when it comes to the movie industry, and the financial success of most movies comes down to timing and a variety of other factors, at this point most fans and observers may be inclined to lay down a blind bet on the prediction that New Moon will better its Twilight predecessor at the box-office. Judging by the waves of online discussions and coverage surrounding The Twilight Saga and New Moon, who wouldn’t go for broke with a bet that New Moon will do better than Twilight? But one thing the online world has proven to be when predicting the box-office success of movies is inconsistent and not quite the reliable barometer the Internet often appears to be. Sometimes it pays off and other times it doesn’t. Although New Moon is no Snakes on a Plane, there are some interesting stats over at BoxOfficeMojo in terms of other hugely popular franchises that reveal the box-office history of the first two Harry Potter movies and a few surprising numbers of other films in the comic and fantasy worlds.

Pattinson has Breaking News

Robert Pattinson, who is now filming the second and third movies in the franchise, confirmed Tuesday in Cannes that there will be a fourth installment of the vampire franchise based on the book “Breaking Dawn.”

Pattinson told The Hollywood Reporter that he is committed to starring in the final outing to date but doesn’t know when backers Summit Entertainment will begin production because of the actor’s jam-packed shooting schedule.

Fans have been hoping for a movie version of the fourth novel from Stephenie Meyer’s best-sellers, so Pattinson’s commitment is the biggest follow up yet. The fourth book centers on Bella and Edward’s marriage and her subsequent pregnancy.

While we anticipate for the next installment in the Twilight Saga, I have come up with the help of some Top-notch Twilight Fan-sites, a list with MovieSet’s most anticipated scenes for New Moon.

The paper-cut scene — You could call this “the beginning of the end” for our favorite human-and-vampire couple. This scene is an essential part of the book and the entire series. This is where Edward decides that he better leave to make Bella safe. Besides, who doesn’t want to see Jasper go all “blood-thirsty-vamp” on Bella?

Bella, Jacob, and Mike at the movies — This is one of the lighter moments in the story. This scene provides some much-need comic relief after Bella’s comatose months. It’s nice to see Bella moving forward, and let’s face it, as much as we adore the pesky-but-adorable Mike Newton, him puking his poor little guts out will provide us with countless laughs.

Bella’s cliff diving — This scene is important because it sets up the second part of the novel perfectly: It is extreme enough to allow Bella to make her statement without risking her life too much. It’s better than, say, her crashing her bike into a tree. Oh, and we also get a peek at some red hair while she’s under water…

Meeting Emily — While this scene is not one that usually comes to mind when thinking of New Moon, it’s vital for the development of the story. Sam and Emily’s story helps Bella understand what “soul mates” truly mean. While meeting Emily, Bella also realizes that the wolves aren’t as safe as she thought they were.

Volterra — This is a given not only because it’s the part that starts to tie up New Moon, but it’s what sets up the sequels. Also, it’s one of the few times where Bella gets to be the heroine instead of the damsel-in-distress.

Vancity Allie was at the Twilight: New Moon set and had an amazing experience. In her blog post The Bella Motorcycle Mystery, she remarks: “I got lucky and managed to get a great video which captures the feel of the one of the scenes, PLUS you can hear Kristen saying some of her lines! Thanks to cast and crew for being so cool!”

Allie breaks down the differences between the book and the movie and points out that:

In this scene in the movie, Bella leaves the theatre with Jessica (the first time she goes to the theatre, not the second time when she goes with Mike and Jacob)… and encounters a motorcycle gang. She decides to go on a joyride with one of the gang members to try to upset Edward into appearing in her head again. Only in this particular movie scene, they actually filmed Rob Pattinson standing right beside Kristen Stewart telling her not to go, with Kristen standing and talking to the gang member beside his bike. (I’m sure they’ll make him an apparition in post-production editing)

She also shares some techniques used in the filming including rain trucks and actors doing their own stunts on a chilly Vancouver night:

“And let me just say this — Kristen Stewart is one HECK of a cool chica. She did ALL her stunts tonight, at least the ones that I saw. Props forbraving it out in the cold Vancouver night on a motorcycle all evening. Major Kudos, Kristen!”

“… Two scenes happen here… one where Bella and Jessica go to Port Angeles for a movie, and a second scene where Bella, Mike, and Jacob have that awkward movie date with that scary movie, “The Dead Come Back.”"

Here’s her insight into how they get the shots:

“There were a number of sidewalk shots, but most of the scenes were shot under the theatre overhang. Cranes and rigs held large diffused light globes, and the sidewalks were lined with bright lights. Plus two spotlights at each end of the block. This was the closest many fans have ever gotten to a Twilight set. It was incredible.”

“It would certainly solve the problem of Edward vs. Jake, but I remember how broken Bella was when he left in New Moon? And that was when there was still a 0.001% chance in Bella’s mind that he would come back.

Hopefully Stephanie Meyer won’t put her protagonist (and her readers) through that again, although it does sound like the “I’d-do-anything-for-you-regardless-of-m… mindset that Edward’s got going on Lets just keep our fingers crossed that he doesn’t die for the final time.”
