The box office from 2008 was just a bit better than ‘07

Monday, January 05, 2009

Now that the holidays are over, the post-mortem for 2008’s box office is also being offered. The clear winner last year was Warner Bros. who had the runaway success of The Dark Knight behind them. With global ticket sales of $997 million dollars, Dark Knight didn’t just prove to be the biggest superhero movie of all-time, it also became the second highest-grossing film ever. Thanks to the Batman movie as well as Sex in the City and Four Christmases, WB enjoyed revenue of $1.77 billion dollars, the biggest haul of cash ever for a movie studio. Continue reading…

WALL-E Rubik's Cube

If you’re playing the Oscar derby game then you’ll want to pay attention to what films the Los Angeles Film Critics Association selected as among the year’s best. This afternoon the association revealed what their top choices were for 2008 and picked the story about a little trash compacting robot as their best film. Disney/Pixar’s WALL-E was the winner for Best Picture followed by The Dark Knight as runner-up, showing that ‘08 could be the year that box office blockbusters finally came of age and became critical darlings with the awards to back it up. Kung Fu Panda

No, don’t go skipping ahead to the next blog story just because you know this is the time that awards season begins! This next piece isn’t about any possible Oscar contenders, no Golden Globes, no Peoples Choice Awards, and it’s not even about what stinkers are up for the 2009 Razzies. No, this one’s about one of the cooler awards that are given for the best animated films of the year: the Annies. I wonder if their award looks like a small redheaded girl? Continue reading…

The Dailies: Variety’s thoughts on “WALL-E” and “Hancock”; PS3 goes Hollywood; and cool looking monster posters

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Welcome to your Thursday edition of “The Dailies”, MovieSet’s collection of the coolest, hottest news associated with the world of film. We’ve got four items to tell you about this morning so let’s get you educated.

…Variety has two new reviews out today, one for the new Disney-Pixar collaboration “WALL-E” (positive) and one for Will Smith’s satirical dramady about a down-and-out superhero named “Hancock” (not so good.) The short version: V loves “WALL-E” and sees huge box office for the long run while with “Hancock” the trade mag forecasts a solid July 4 opening weekend followed by a steep drop-off.

…I came across a self-described “ode” written by an AP reporter about the Internet Movie Database (or IMDB as it’s lovingly referred to by those seeking to rest the muscles in their mouth.) If you don’t know the history of the IMDB this is a good place to get an education about its start, rise and where it’s viewed in relation to the other movie websites out there

…if you needed more evidence that the day of convergence is just about upon us, Sony has just announced plans to start its own movie download network for owners of the PlayStation 3. Details will be arriving next month but the service will be available for North American, European and Japanese PS3 owners. “Please expect more from our evolving PlayStation buisness,” said the video game division’s boss, Kazuo Hirai. Microsoft offers a similar downloading service to its Xbox 360 owners but it costs to be a part of their Gold network. The videogame wars are still on but now movies are being used as artillery.

…and if you’re a lover of movie posters and retro/art deco design, then you need to take a long look at artist Tom Whalan’s website at StrongStuff.net. I discovered this guy via a story on Slashfilm and he is making original poster designs for classic/famous films like the “Star Wars”trilogy, “The Wizard of Oz” and Universal’s quartet of legendary monster movies. Check it out below and then go hit his website to see more goodness.
